I think the writing was chasing what the Tumblr crowd wanted at the time: Gay sex.
More like it was appealing to what the writer wanted which was a beta male getting pushed around and used and treated like shit. And Eerie Cuties made everyone loose. And that one with the succubus was an even bigger clusterfrick.
Giving Chloe and the Witch Trio their own comics was the stupidest fricking thing they could have done.
