Mostly because the context and portrayal. Sheldon was more or less your average Pining Loser cliche. Unseriously played for laughs most the time and he never is portrayed as having a chance or really giving up anything better. Mordechai meanwhile SIMPed for seasons, finally got it, got dumped fell into several bouts of depression, dumped a chick who was better for him while also ruining his friend's wedding, and then finally it wasn't really for anything.
