I don't really mind the townie episodes. Personally, I dislike how they usually don't really provide anything for the overarching plot and usually take away episodes that could had better explain the story or setting.
I hated the townie episodes because eventually they overshadowed and minimized the gem characters into mostly making them in the background

The townie episodes were always the main focus of discourse. Random episodic adventures were always going to be mandated by the network, but combine the regular six month hiatuses with another Ronaldo and/or Onion episode and people lost their shit.
human episodes were perfectly fine for me if they involved gem magic. They had the fricking gall to waste episodes on human plots with no gem relevance whatsoever, jesas.
I always enjoyed townie episodes. Always a nice breath of fresh air in the middle of all the plot. Also nice setup to feel the stakes rising when townies get involved in gem stuff. "Are you my Dad?" was hype.
I agree that the Are You My Dad? episodes were really good and had a great call back to earlier in the show. The writing for the new characters Aquamarine and Topaz was top notch. I'm really disappointed with how she was written in Future.

Sugar let too much slide with regard to art/animation quality. For the total runtime, she also spent quite a lot of it on townie plots which were almost always pointless and interrupted actual plot. This was compounded by the fricked up release schedule from CN, as if they were trying to kill the show (like Fox did with Firefly). Getting 4-6 10 minute episodes every 6-8 months and having half of them be townie plots was frustrating. Also, the ending sucked and Future didn't make it better by literally invalidating the point from the movie.

I was talking about the original series. Future happens after a 2 year timeskip so by the time we see the characters again they're all pretty used to the aliens, so the show focuses more on showing how the town itself is changing with their addition.

I've never seen SU merch irl or even in ads tbh. I guess modern cartoons aren't as reliant on toy sales as older ones were? I just remember growing up watching Ben 10 and constantly seeing toys for that show, even had a few of them. With SU it felt like there was nothing.
There were a couple of video games, some plushies, and some crap collectibles. That's it. The show didn't really appeal to kids so you didn't see a lot of merch aimed at kids

In hindsight, there was no chance of them ever reclaiming that, and of course they never did.

I actually enjoy a lot of the music and most of the character designs and personalities. It's just that Steven is the worst character in the show and since he's the main character that hurts it a lot. Plus the plot and messaging is pretty stupid/confused in places.
When I first started watching the show I didn't understand why Steven was even there when the gems seemed infinitely more interesting as a point of focus.But once character development started to stick and Steven's coming of age anxieties became more relevant in the face of him realizing that none of the people he looks up to and loves are perfect, I couldn't imagine the show without him.
It was pretty good until the cluster, and then everything went to shit since that chapter where Lars fricking dies, the movie was fine only because Spinel, and i don't wanna talk about Future

They constantly went back and forth between what Fusion was supposed to be. My personal take at this point is that they didn't have a consistent idea for it and it became whatever they wanted it to represent in the moment. That's why you have overt sexual shit like Peridot supposedly being an asexual stand-in but then also Steven fusing with his adoptive moms and his own biological father.

Because Sugar has never contradicted it, and the show was driven by her boarders just as much as it was by her.
I never heard of a single important plot point being decided by one of the boarders. She let them write jokes in the episodes and some of the dialogue, and blew smoke up their asses about how important they were, but Fusion was her precious conceptual Thing in the show, it was how she pitched the show to CN, she wouldn't have let the boarders adjust the logic behind it.
But anyway, I haven't seen a solid argument for why Peridot not wanting to fuse WITH GARNET, the main one who consistently makes fusions sexual (not counting with Steven obviously) couldn't be a hint towards her not being sexually attracted to other gems. The problem with it is that the two are mutually exclusive, and most people just parrot her being asexual for not fusing while also calling fusion not sexual. The only way I'll accept fusion as not being sexual is if it's agreed upon that the 'Peridot is asexual' jargon is completely baseless, which most SUgays never agree to.
Her saying that Peridot was written as if she was asexual has about the same weight as an actor saying that they played a character as if they were gay.

The way that the show ended was too sudden. I didn't want it go that way either.
I'd say that from the beginning of the series all the way up to The Cluster being beaten is the best part of the show. From there, things just get very confused and muddled.
Latter parts of the show were liberal in a really odd way. For example, an outright abomination like Fluorite is treated as a metaphor for polygamy and there's nothing wrong with that or her.

They really kind of messed her character up something fierce by never having her able to really speak for herself in the present. Even some of the most recent memories or stuff we get told about Rose has a piece of her life to yet be told missing from it that just completely invalidates what we just heard.
The show really needed to have the chance to give her more to say other than some factory reset AI she left internally within Steven to shout her will out that she's gone.
She's just such a hidden in the details character that even with her full picture, there's still a lot of questions up in the air.
Was she genuinely 'flawed'? And completely just dismantling the idea that homeworld itself seemed to have generated that diamonds were incapable of coming out with issues?
Or was just being smaller than the other diamonds her only issue?
Everything about the Diamonds' origins are kind of a big piece to her pie that never got properly explored and it feels gravely needed to just understand her better, SU kinda flops this with a lot of characters, you cannot seriously tell me all Sapphire did as a foreseer was just go to a random battle locale and dictate how a battle would go, she surely had some flings here or there at a high class ball, or perhaps had a Pearl of her own or did indulge in the higher caste system she was apart of.
All the CGs came from somewhere in the caste system, it feels like the whole regression thing the Movie does was trying to be a spotlight on that, but we just have no context for how they were as simple homeworld gems, maybe Sapphire and Ruby to an extent, but we kind of needed to see how our heroes truly were to spark this ability to just easily abandon their prior homeworld lives like that.

Even when you "reset" a computer, there's plenty of data that can still be scraped if someone knowledgeable can get a hold of the physical memory storage. He could access her fricking memories, jesus christ, please make more of an effort to learn about your mom, Steven. I'm going to have to wait a decade plus before Sugar gets off her ass and writes another sequel, if ever.

I dunno man, I just really dig the more down-to-earth look at how Steven had been processing all these otherworldly responsibilities as a young teen and how that messed him up good. Future was a 20-episode arc, but each episode still functioned well on its own and was engaging even without full context. I appreciated this more on random rewatches. It was nice to get episodes dedicated to several different Gems, the "reverse escapism" with the casual use of Warp Pads and Steven's Little Homeschool gig was neat, and I can't overstate how much I love "Snow Day" in both concept and execution.
The resolution to Steven's intrapersonal issues could've been handled a little better, but overall I had a good time and feel this was a fitting expansion of the franchise.
This, it’s the intimate-episodic closeness of the townie episodes, but with the main characters people really care about. Even the dramatic stuff really work for me, I never understood the hate.

The world building for this show sucked ass. I accepted the fact that gem lore would always take a backseat to the townie crap, but it feels like they stopped caring after the Zoo arc. Homeworld looked like a jumbled mess, aside from White Diamond, the gem designs got worse and worse, Pink Diamond looked straight up ridiculous and nothing like her mural, and those "less human" gems they were alluding to were just sentient objects. I think what gets me most is the episode 'Lars of the Stars' where Emerald goes through a list of all the awesome stuff Lars did with the off-colors that we completely missed because Connie was being a b***h.
It's a shame that the video games were more satisfying than the entire show itself.

It's really bizarre because the world building was incredibly strong in season 1, and then it's like they forgot half of what was even brought up in season 1 in the first place while barely even worldbuilding at all after that. It's just a strong divide that the first season legitimately almost feels like a completely different show on rewatch.
I've heard other anons hypothesize that Sugar was just using season 1 to get her foot in the door, and make sure CN wouldn't drop the show in just the first season. Once she had thoroughly led everybody on and captured audience interest, then the other shoe dropped, and she focused most of her attention onto the boring shit that she liked, but that no one else watched it for, only drip feeding the content people wanted so they wouldn't stop watching completely.
And then the artbook came out and the uncorrupted gems without their scars and the ones not showed in future all look like garbage. Like they just puked up crayons on the pages and sold it.

I think the biggest issue was the fact that animation was all over the place and how moronic the scheduling was. The bombs may have always been massive hype trains, but what came out didn’t exactly live up to much of it more often than not. That said I still like it for what it was, and the soundtrack in particular was pretty banger. Crazy to think it came out 10 years ago.

Literally every time Sugar boarded the show it was a huge jump in quality. There's one scene with Blue Diamond where she boarded a single shot and it looked dramatically better than the entire rest of the scene, I think it was during "What's the Use in Feeling Blue". Wish she was a better tard wrangler with her boarders because if they just kept to her style the whole show would have looked great.
I personally dig the show's stylistic variety, but I do also wonder what a version of SU that stuck more closely to Rebecca Sugar's style could've looked like. Masterful draftsmanship on her part.
