I started watching this recently and while I am enjoying it a great deal - am I insane or is this just Deep Space 9 but with a different coat of paint?
Anyhow, Garibaldi is /ourguy/ and the actress playing Ivanova might be the absolute worst actress I've seen. There are 2x4's with more personality than her.
DS9 is a shameless B5 rip-off.
The creator of B5 went to Paramount with an idea of a new series based on a space station. They told him to frick off and then a couple of years later they came up with DS9. B5 is better tho.

DS9 is a weaker version of B5 with a Star Trek aesthetic. Claudia Christian is not a good actress. She does one thing well, and that is be humorless. Just wait until she goes to the place and has that slapstick exchange with the guy. It's painful to watch.

I too just started watching this. I made the same thread last night. I'm enjoying it a lot. The script is so strong that the bad TV acting, 90s CGI and cheap sets can't ruin it.
The acting quality is so wildly inconsistent you get whiplash. Like you'll go from a scene with G'kar and/or Londo to a scene with someone who almost 100% literally cannot act.

This guy gets it. And for everyone just starting out, it gets even better. But for all of the bad actors, the true gems are Londo & G'Kar who really carry the show, and whose arcs are really the stuff of legend.

here's a little secret: the CGI could be even worse and it wouldn't matter. Since so many of the designs are "realistic" it holds up because your brain knows what it's looking at.

I hate to stir up a hornets nest but this is why I can't get into a lot of anime. So many shit designs that are simply impractical. Not to mention the frequent screaming.
I don't mind it. It looks like Unreal Tournament or Quake III or Starcraft. I even like the 90s sci-fi game menu screen music.
Okay, I didn't know about who was "first" with the idea or not but I still like DS9 a great deal even if that is now allegedly a rip-off of this.
I'm still on season 1 but it's great fun so far, mostly when involving everyone but Ivanova. She really brings down any scene she's in. I love Londo and G'kar especially. Also the guy portraying G'kar was a romulan who kept badgering Picard on TNG.
DS9 come out first, JMS had to knock on a lot of doors to get B5. Ivanova is an adquired taste, the tough cookie that gets things done russianly.

I've been religiously following every b5 thread on Cinemaphile for over a decade and I have never seen anyone b***hing about her before. It's clearly a (you) problem. She has plenty of great scenes and has a specific personality you just don't like. There's nothing wrong with that but trying to make people think she is a shitty actor because you don't like her role is kind of silly and isn't going to fly with a show this well established.
Watch the entire series before you start trying to talk shit about anyone. You haven't seen anything yet.
Ivanova is a slightly mixed bag. Most of the time she's fine. Then there's shit like the "sex" scene with the Lumati that is legitimately unwatchable, but to be fair I don't know who could have made that work. I always found her "I am Death Incarnate" speech before they fight the Shadow-roided Earthforce ships cringe too but her breakdown over Marcus is great. A lot of the issues seem to stem from her being given a lot of pretty bad lines to work with.

Meh. JMS was a one-trick pony who ripped off a lot of LOTR for B5. When his bag of tricks ran out, season 5 sucked, Legend of the Rangers was garbage tier. There was never any hope for Crusade. And it never had the benefit of any character close to as entertaining as Londo or G'Kar

It's either total garbage or some of the best written and acted television ever made, with nothing in between. It has the biggest fluctuation in quality of anything I've ever watched. The lows are low but when it's good it's fricking incredible.
There isn't a single episode that qualifies as total garbage. Even the most generic monster of the week episodes have at least one good character development scene. And a lot of the monsters are actually interesting because they aren't just "human with some extra brow ridges" ala star trek.

That was a kino episode, it's clear you have shit taste and couldn't recognize good story telling if it smacked you in the face.
You completely missed the point of the episode. It wasn't to introduce new ongoing characters. It was to show the crazy shit that happens on the station from the perspective of normal people who aren't personally involved. Almost every long running show has an episode like it and often they are some of the better episodes. It was a refreshing break from the drama and had plenty of fun moments. You need to stop thinking about everything from the perspective of the long running narrative.
