I just don't care. I've been bored since Death Magnetic.
I get they're fricking old but they sound old and play like boomers in a garage band and their GUITAR TONE SOUNDS WEAK AND TWANGY FRICKING CHANGE IT ALREADY.
Nothing about their official post-Black album material will ever sound like it came from the people that essentially wrote the bible on thrash metal. I'm not expecting top tier thrash, or any at all at their age but I don't want half assed, tired geriatrics farting around in my ears with forgettable noise, either.
Also might be a production thing. Some of the new songs actually sound passable with the right attitude and tone:

Lux Aeterna is decent. All the other songs are bland, directionless riffing with no hooks, just like Hardwired.

Crown of Barbwire's riff is pretty good

      Anonymous

I'm a huge fan so I was always going to like it
I think it sounds very similar to Hardwired, they're both solid hard rock albums. Obviously they'd never match the earlier stuff, nobody ever will. But as far as 60 year old men go making music they can still make some very listenable stuff

Saw them twice last year and the album sounds a lot better live. Even the plainest riffs sound good live when it's deafening. Also glad James got out of the alcohol addition phase again. Metallica live in 2023 just felt better than 2019. He's looking good again too, they look like they're having fun

      Anonymous

I'm pretty contrarian on Metallica in that I thin their newer stuff is slightly underrated and the old material is slightly overrated. 72S isn't great, but it certainly blows away whatever Megadeth or Maiden or Slayer are up to now.

          Anonymous

true but metallica without the higher pitched vocals is just not the same. dropping the minute long intros, outros and solos with the black album and onward also didn't help.

          Anonymous

That wasn't why though, Metallica toured hard on the Black Album and James blew out his voice to the point where he was causing damage to his vocal chords.
Why he chose to sound like a yodeling cowboy afterwards is beyond me, though.

          Anonymous

He's still an angsty homosexual. He changed his voice deliberately because he blew it out touring so much in the late 80s/early 90s. But he chose the wrong type of voice to change it to. Nothing after the Black Album is worth listening to.
