I think Moonstone is a pretty cool character. Like a genuinely evil Emma Frost without the mutie baggage.

Please. She fluctuates on that constantly.

She gets more or less completely b***hy, but even when she was at her most least selfish, I don't think she was ever "not" evil.

The fundamental difference is Karla has never really grappled with approaching the world in a different way. She grows closer to people and is willing to go out on a limb for them, but unlike Melissa and Abner, who genuinely change their lifestyles because it brings them more happiness and fulfillment or even Norbert who just kind of goes with the flow either way, Karla has always remained the same person with her own ambitions. One who manipulates and seeks out peoples' weakpoints for her own selfish, material gain. Even Zemo will have, like, grand designs that might have ends beyond merely himself, but Karla will always think about her own petty plans. Petty in the sense of the overall scope, she's not out to rule the world or even be like the Kingpin. Just plans that revolve around being a narcissist seeking to schmooze with others to take advantage of them. She likes doing this, it's comfortable to her. She's not some "oh woah, I need to live this was because I have some trauma or inability to trust people" sob stories. No, she's an evil psychiatrist who abuses her power, literal and figurative, for her own gain.

But that's ultimately both less and more than what people think when we argue about "being evil." This early page is a great example of like, how Karla is evil, but that doesn't mean there's just NOTHING there. She can feel certain things, want to do certain things, but her character is ultimately a selfish one (note that her focus is on how good playing a hero "feels," not anything truly selfless).

Her last three appearances have been all over the place, proving people have no idea who she is. Her best one was in War of Kings where she actually played it cool and smart, pretending to be an Asgardian to make frost giants work for her. She was also in those Ravencroft books where she was just a generic evil scientist. And then she was in one of the X-Men minis where she worked for Count Nefaria and.

    Well.

Just fricking read this dialogue and you'll see how much they knew about her.

Look this isn't the best take on her but I will admit "So utterly fricking done with shit that she's just resorted to shitposting at people" is at least a somewhat entertaining take.

Hold on, look at her bikini bottoms.
They don't look they were part of the original drawing.
Is it possible she was tanning nude, and the editors decided that was too much, so they added the bikini to her after the fact?

There are some lines drawn down there. The artist possibly meant for it to be some kind of ultra-skimpy thong and they just had the colorist make it look like more skin was covered up.

    So Emma Frost?

Moonstone is Emma if Emma wasn't a hypocritical nazi b***h prostitute. Moonstone knows she is evil, knows she's a b***h, and doesn't hide behind "mah persecution complex" and owns what she is and that she's only a "hero" because it beats being in jail.

And her current burial in comics, as far as no one using her except in random ass stories, is due to the fact that editorial is still seething mad butt-hurt that Moonstone is infinitely more popular than Carol Danvers, to the point that after her brief stint in Dark Avengers as Dark Carol, writers/artists tried their best to make Ms Marvel and the original costume, Karla's default codename/costume.

Moonstone was great because she went through a whole character arc of trying to be a hero despite being a narcissistic sociopath. Ellis is the one who ruined her by ignoring all the continuity of the last 110 issues of the Thunderbolts and reverting her into the shitty mustache twirling villain she's appeared as ever since without any explanation. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes her interesting at all.

          >You have a fundamental misunderstanding of what makes her interesting at all.
As with a lot of characters who were in Thunderbolts, turning supervillains into D-list superheroes was never what made them interesting, they were always better as villains.

            >As with a lot of characters who were in Thunderbolts, turning supervillains into D-list superheroes was never what made them interesting, they were always better as villains.
And? There were 150 issues of character development that got discarded completely so she can revert to the most generic female villain archetype whose history never gets touched on ever again. If you prefer her this way, your taste is legit just trash.

        This times ten.

Karla's never going to be pushed like she was in the late 90s/00s because she's way more popular than Carol. To the point that they won't even let her be Carol's arch enemy since they are too scared that she'll upstage her or that fans will call her, not Kamala, the real Ms Marvel.

Karla's entire thing in the OG Thunderbolts run was going "Frick, being good and getting praised and loved and tons of the prestige and accolades and money they always wanted is making them become good people, I need to keep an eye on this...actually shit this DOES feel good, damn, er...wait shit I'm evil dammit I'm evil!" over and over again where she was the only one consciously asking "Actually why the frick don't we just go legitimate" but was also a ruthless b***h and struggled with that.
