No, the flanderization was worst in that season. Skill crane, rule of dumb, good neighbors, driven to tears are perfect textbook examples of characters acting horrible and evil completely out of character.

What the frick are you on about? Who is being evil and out of character there? Squidward's gloating spree at the end is totally in-character, especially considering the context. If you mean Mr. Krabs, Squidward can quit playing the machine at any time. The entire root of the conflict in that story is Squidward's own ego stubbornly refusing to quit playing the machine which is a classic story structure. He has 100% agency at all times but can't butt out because he lacks any ability to swallow his pride. I can't believe that in 2023 there still exists melodramatic homosexuals who think any plot where Squidward is unhappy or inconvenienced at any point is "LE EVIL TORTURE PORN" even if he's brought it entirely upon himself. have a nice day. Skill Crane is funny and has a good story for the show and characters. In general, I'm so fricking tired of this blanket insistence on this board that everything after the movie is automatically terrible, and if you think otherwise you're just a filthy zoomer. Yeah, I was thinking of the “torture porn” thing. That is one of the first episodes (besides Lost Mattress) where it really really leans into the “physical and mental anguish of Squidward is really funny.” I get where you’re coming from but I mentioned it because it was the stepping stone from Squidward being a grumpy cashier to Squidward being completely stepped on every single place in life which began to occur around that time.

This is the exact kind of forceful, all-consuming blanket dominance I can't stand. Maybe you should understand the fact that the public discourse can evolve overtime. Like, what a fricking shocker, newer people who grew up with newer stuff are more liable to like it on its own terms than someone who grew up with the older stuff being a certain way and didn't like change. Look OP, at some point I believed the same at you, but then I realized it was just nostalgia because when I rewatched Season 4, the majority of the episodes were pretty shit. There were a few good ones at the start but the quality very quickly degraded as the season went on that it was jarring. And even the few good ones would still just be ok by Season 1-3 standards
Some of the better post season 4 episodes is the indoor golf episode, the hide and seek episode, the mermaid man and barnacle boy full episode, the runaway road trip, legends of bikini bottom special, frozen face off and extreme spots. Something about them are comfy funny and made pretty well

it's impossible to argue that season 4 is good because there were a few leftover scripts from season 3 and those shit all over the rest of the season. it was a change, and a big one
Fear of a Krabby Patty, Shell of a Man, Have you Seen this Snail, The Lost Matress, Krabs vs Plankton and Skill Crane were all pretty good, but after that it went to shit. The show didn't become enjoyable for me again until Vincent Waller became showrunner.
As much as the wacky faces are shat on, at least Patrick isn't unlikable anymore nor does Spongebob cry every five seconds. Squidward abuse is still a thing, but it's more comedic than sadistic.
The amount of damage Paul Tibbitt did to the show was detrimental and I think Hillenburg started to realize that, hence why he came back to the show in the last few years of his life.
To its credit, I liked its specials more than 3's.
S1 is the peak.
Honestly, the newest season isn't so bad. They switched to CG to save money, but at least... It's more educational.

No, that episode was great. The episode where they were invisible was shit though. The strangler episode also kinda sucked. I noticed they seemed to be losing steam by the end of Season 3, which makes me wonder that if the movie never happened and all the old writers stayed that if it would've stayed good or if it was doomed to go bad in Season 4

honestly, season 6 was pretty kino and just as if not more good than the pre movie seasons, it felt when the writers really got their groove going.

Season 4 has some classics, but it also has real stinkers. Season 5 is about 2 or 3 bad episodes for every 1 great one, and by the time season 6 rolls around, the show is essentially unwatchable
Season 4 has a couple good episodes in it but it's still largely a step down from the first 3 seasons and movie.
