has anybody besides south park tackled parodying the racebending shit yet? I'd think most shows would be afraid to do that because they'd get accused of being racist or something. south park seems like one of the only shows that could parody that and not get called out for it.

trust me when i say most creative would rather create original IPs with diverse MCs then have to rehash an existing one and race swap a character. it's usually studios execs that's demand this stuff because they want the brownie points without actually investing in an original ip

i dont think its been confirmed, but a lot of people think that the Velma show was supposed to be something original and warner bros made them attach it to scooby doo in order to greenlight it. it would explain why scooby wasn't in it, because they probably didn't have a large talking dog in the original pitch

Gamers didn't rise up when Coach and Rochelle took over half the L4D cast because both of them are solid original characters, and the general mainstream media hadn't squandered all of its good will at the time. If a black character is introduced now and receives a shit response, it's because they are the latest in a 50 mile line of shittily executed only-exists-to-be-black characters, not because everyone outside of your echo chamber is racist.

          Braindead post.
Black anime characters ARE generic stereotypes. They may be well-writen in other ways, but they are made by people who have likely have never seen a real black person in their lives and view them and the most widespread parts of their culture (i.e. stereotypes) as something exotic, so this is emphasized in the work they make. A charactr in anime will never casually be black, this is always going to be a big deal and their character is likely going to be loud and bombastic because of that.

Well yeah same, but it was a movie about Maleficent. Its not like it was a live action remake of Sleeping Beauty. They made a live action spin off about the villain. For anyone reading this unaware, basically the same thing they did with Cruella DeVille years later. Which is I guess annoying for any hardcore sleeping beauty superfans out there, but it was different enough that it was fine and a bunch of people could manage. I watched it with my mom and sister when it came out and it was nice enough.

But even my family who tends to let the cheesiest of bullshit movies slide watched the Alladin remake or something, I forgot what it was but it was one of those overhaul remakes of an entire film and its preexisting plot, and they hated it (as did I).
          NOBODY likes the flat-out remakes.

You COULD do a compelling movie with Cruella as the sympathetic protagonist, but DISNEY cannot do that kind of movie because it wouldn't fit with their shallow ass grrl power brand.

Set the movie in the post-war 50s, show Cruella as a bullied child stuffed into a soul crushing posh bording school where she is punished with the cane for being disruptive and implied slightly insane. Repeatedly show the audience time and again how so little animal welfare was considered in 1950s England, and this is the culture that is drilled into her - animals have no souls, animals can't feel pain, animals exist to serve man.
Follow her growing up as a rebellious feminist fasion icon, a darling of 60s women lib being a cut throat boss in a world where men still are the leaders of buisness.
Show that Cruella, due to her upbringing, just cannot UNDERSTAND why the hypocritical public think killing cows for leather or foxes for fur is any different from culling dogs for their coats. And then show how time marches on forward without her as due to her old values she has become a relic of the past just like the old fur coats and turn of the century feather hats that once inspired her.

She’s so irredeemable they had to make it the Dalmatians’ fault she hates them so much. Feminism is a hell of a drug.

The Dalmatian remake is weird because Disney already made a serviceable live action remake with Glenn Close.

Same with the 90s Jungle Book movie. Although I suppose since that one is completely different from the animated movie you could justify a 2nd LA movie. It's a great 90s era action-adventure movie that no one remembers. Check it out if you haven't.

Why do zoomers defend lazy raceswaps? Is it because they're dumb kids who grew up with this and defend it as anything but lazy cashgrab representation?

Turning a character black does not combat representation. It takes away whereas creating a new character takes away from no one.

      Anonymous

Zoomers don't have mental autonomy, silly. If Zoomers defends something it's because they were programmed to defend it. Do you think Zoomers even know what racism is? Do you think they've ever so much as encountered a homeless person?

I'm just saying that zoomers for whatever reason, seem to think these things are unironically good instead of being the epitome of cynical lazy cash grabs, and the raceswaps done in earnest to 'add representation' fall short because raceswaps only really exist as what I mentioned above.

The only time this isn't the case is when there isn't some rule about "representation" and you could turn a character white. That's the only time it's honest.

Some people just don't give a shit, and were raised in an environment that encouraged tolerance and understanding. I remember being 11 and arguing online that there's nothing inherently wrong with Miles Morales back when his first comic came out in 2011 because the mainline Peter is still alive. Though this was a different time and I got soured on Miles since then, but this is probably how a lot of kids unironically perceive these things, they'e too young to have real stances on this. As a teen I could agree with people saying that making Johnny Storm black is unnecessary but I also was generally fine with it because it seemed like something new and different and I was open to it. Though nowadays it's so widespread I imagine it's harder to view it this way.

Idk ask Disney or the main 3 corporations who controll all the media. You act like we get a choice.

        Anonymous

        >but what about other minorities?

It should be done better for them too and people ITT would whine about that as well. You really have to understand that studio executives don’t give a frick about actually representing people, they care about money. The talent wants diverse and representative content because they care, but studios keep saying no.

What is going on right now is that studios have realised that black people actually are a demographic that wants to spend money so they’re doing some milquetoast representation now when things like Get Out and Black Panther are making tons of money. Asian representation is slightly getting better because of Shang Chi and Crazy Rich Asians. And they should do better. But these structures are old and slow and the studio heads are even more averse to changing their ways. Which is why shit like Oscars making requirements about diversity a thing, to push the dinosaurs to actually do better instead of fighting back and denying projects.

If you pay any attention to actual industry people who talk in podcasts you would know that even today studio executives regularly just say stupid shit like “are we still doing diversity?” or keep insisting that you can’t do a movie like Awkwafina’s 2019 movie The Farewell, which has an entirely Asian cast, because nobody wants to see that shit, you need a white friend in there for it to be relatable! Even though it’s a fricking family story about a grandma dying.

These executives are the same type that in the 60s and 70s tell Bruce Lee he can’t be a leading man in Hollywood because he’s Asian and Asians don’t sell, only then run to kiss his feet when he becomes an international star by doing couple of Hong Kong movies and offer him a Hollywood paid martial arts movie deal. Or who says black people cannot sell movies and then run to do tons of cheap Blacksploitation movies once independent black talent do their own movies and prove its successful.

          Anonymous

I suggest that most corporate black representation isn't actually aimed at the black community but is aimed at mostly white urbanite liberals who want to see more black people in media. I'd also suggest asian rep isn't getting better because of hollywood, but mostly because of anime and kpop bypassing their dumbfrick heads..

          Anonymous

          >It should be done better for them too and people ITT would whine about that as well.
Not so much when it's Asians because of the amount of weebs with yellow fever.

            Anonymous

Yellow fever is a huge factor but the uncomfortable truth is that people in general find (east) asians more visually pleasing than blacks, hence why the outrage isn't as big whenever asians are also used to fill a diversity quota.

You clearly haven’t been in threads where people are literally going GO BACK TO FRICKING CHINA IF YOU WANT REPRESENTATION if you say that there is nothing wrong with people asking for representation in the country they live in and point out that Asians have for a long time been discriminated by Hollywood and stereotyped to death

some uber-rich banker-gay likes to larp as a sjw, so he gives better interest rates to companies that do diversity stunts. These companies don't really give a crap about that (except for maybe some of the lower-level management and HR-types), so they go with the most available minority there is: black people. Sometimes they'll go with another one just to spice things up a bit, but blacks are the easiest, so that's what they stick to.

But not that many people knew about Xenu and so on before South Park. Or it's not like yaoi was a new thing when Tweek x Craig came out, but it still seemed to be a surprise for many older audience.

Now so many people are "terminally online" that you really can't make anything new anymore unless it's about some niche thing happening only in state/city x the rest of the world isn't aware of (like those scoots that weren't such a massive thing back when that episode came out).

That's the thing, there isn't. They're currently on the highest possible level and it's still old and useless at this point. The entire topic is overdone to hell and back. They have so many things to make episodes/specials about and they choose the most played-out BS that everyone and their mother has been talking about, analyzing, and parodying for years.

It's not untouchable. It's just boring and played-out. I don't think some people understand that "The whole live action remakes with race swapping situation is lame and old" doesn't mean "I'm CANCELLING it and NOBODY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT IT".
Mainstream media already has talked about it so. Fricking. Much. It's not untouchable, it's already been molested from the inside-out by everyone who's ever crossed paths with it.

I think this is a case of legacy media finding itself increasingly irrelevant. Before the net was what it is today, these were the edgy mouthpieces that did go there at the time, culture moved more slowly then. Now memes come and go, video essayists say the same thing, tweets go viral and get forgotten. Some random anonymous guy on the internet can make me laugh harder than any comedy movie, stand up special or sitcom. South Park can make an episode a week but Matt and Trey are probably not tapped into the culture the way they once were. Zoomer stuff and tiktok is likewise incomprehensible to me. Mainstream TV knows its on its way out. The age of cinema is also sadly on its way out

Yes it is safe to do so and talk about race swapping in movies in the mainstream. People with millions of dollars on the line have entire shitass podcasts about it and spend half their day tweeting about it and still have unfathomable hoardes of dickriders and public credibility.

              >Mainstream media already has talked about it so. Fricking. Much.
I'm not familiar with what you're talking about. I mean from the shit I see, I can't think of another corporate cartoon, or comic book that covers this, and this extends into indie comics.

Genuine question, why is the american/western media so obsessed with black representation? Most modern shows shoehorn Black folk in them (be them raceswapped or original characters) but what about other minorities?

There are people who believe that the problems in the black community are caused by racisim, and that much of this comes to self image issues, and poor role models, so more, better, role models in media will fix things like the crime rate, academic performance gap, and income gap.

It's like where they get their info from. The only reason any person on earth doesn't know about these types of media now is if they're dead or too senile to know their own name.

No it's not? There's more of this shit everywhere the most recent fiasco is Velma and we keep seeing the insert of blacks in place of whites in almost everything now. If it was truly about representation mattering they would give us a lesbian Eskimo instead of just making characters black for the sake of inclusion points but companies don't care and go the easy route because blacks are easily swayed and any white liberal will eat it up

I don't care about having black characters in media or gay characters or whatever the frick I just hate the obvious pandering and virtue Signaling of representation mattering. >lesbian Eskimo
there's no incentive for that. To paraphrase an old Dave Attell line, the Eskimos and Amish are the only two groups its always okay to make fun of. They're never going to find out about it.

              Anonymous

no, I'm saying they don't watch media and don't buy tickets or merch. Assuming Eskimos even allow for homosexuality in their culture there is no incentive to pander to gay eskimos. That's how you know all this representation talk is BS.

              Also, obligatory:

but that isn't their logic, its just what they say. Money and clout are the real motivators here. If they cared about representation, something like a show about a gay Amish kid moving to the big city and discovering themselves on Rumspringa might have been made by now. But that will never make as much money or put as many butts in seats as Black Panther or earn the same woke points as Black Little Mermaid or Netflix Sandman's frankly excessive blackwashing.
