We all share the same fate, so why not laugh a bit together?

I vaguely recall Zach saying in a podcast that the show doesn't actually have a message and it's just about whatever funny idea they have, and if people manage to find meaning in it it's basically a rorschach test

But the show is not solely aimed at generating laughter; the creator is personally attempting to share his ideology and tell you how to live your life.

Literally every episode is absurdism. How do you not see the absurdity in Mr. Frog accidentally slicing someone's hands off with a novelty check, Salty's murder plot tape, Charlie's Enchanted Forest experience, or Shrimp/Shrimpina as absurd?

Ironic that Charlie was right in that Shrimp needed to move on, but helping Shrimp by working out and changing his image was never affirmed to be the path to success, Shrimp so happened to come across the coffee shop girl that Pim brought and was actually rewarded for being himself rsther than taking to the gym for self improvement.

It'd be more accurate to say the show has Existentialist themes, the common reoccurring theme of people finding their own meaning in life despite the absurdist nature of the universe around them being probably the most obvious manifestation of said themes. It's very specifically an answer to nihilism, even mocking what the show creators perceive as "commodified nihilism" which is deceptive in its nature and only pushes nihilistic ideas to further its own agendas.

That's because it isn't. It's the invention of an autistic nihilist who couldn't take a joke at his expense. If he actually adhered to his professed beliefs, it wouldn't have bothered him. But because he's autistic, he has to take it extremely personal & make it everyone else's problem too.

It was saying that people who espouse nihilistic values are hyoocritical frauds. If they really believed in that they would kill themselves. It's absurdity for the sake of absurdity.

You wanna know why it does so well, because it contrasted with the other adult animated shows which were all about things suck ass.

You can make a show about people trying to make someone happy and make it all go wrong only for things to work out.

Be happy doesn't mean things get better, it is just another way of finding humor in things.
It's pretty sad people cant deal with this show existing because they are just whiny b***hes all the time.

It isn't absurdist or dealing with absurdity, though. In fact, it's almost anti-absurdism or post-absurdism, where you have irrational characters or concepts but they are in a completely logical and mundane setting. Like take the main cast and the typical plot. You have four non-human characters, one of which isn't even capable of normal speech, and they all work for a company whose job couldn't possibly be profitable and has no quantifiable goal. They "make people smile", a mixture between the Big Brother program, handymen, and self-help gurus. Their clients are not just losers, but anthromorphic frogs and Satan himself. In an absurdist show, the company would be whimsical and the boss some sort of Willy Wonka like the Warden from Superjail, and the plots would be fantastic and wouldn't fully make sense. Instead, the anthromorphic frog plot resolves itself with the realization that the frog can do immoral things but only in a socially approved context; while Satan quits his internet/gaming addiction by becoming so pissed off he tortures a main character. All of these are biting critiques you'd find more in South Park than Superjail. You can really see where the series' tone is during the workplace scenes, where it is played completely straight and characters just hang out in the break room doing mundane things. Characters are weird, but they live in a sane world only insane in the ways our own world is.

What I'm trying to say is that Smiling Friends is more a series of skits with a workplace comedy premise. People are trying to assign vast ideological terms for something that is no more complicated in its intentions than 90's era Simpsons.

Smiling friends is pretty apolitical, at least in regards to the current left/reight ameripol window. However, there are reccuring themes and messages in the show baked into its premise and character dynamics. Making a piece of art always reflects the aims, desires and interests of the creator, even if the aim is to make something completely neutral(which Smiling Friends is not, even if the bias isn't political).
