It still holds up. Carl is the glue that holds it all together and people will get mad that Urkel dominated later seasons, but there's a reason for that. Jaleel White, like Reginald VelJohnson is talented as hell. I never minded that it became mostly the Carl/Urlel show - something almost akin to Abbot and Costello or Laurel and Hardy. We'll never get another show like it again. Or Sanford. Or Mr Cooper. Or 227, Cosby, etc. Black shows back then were allowed to stand on their own two feet and not have every ep of every season revolve around how put upon they are and how awful white people are. I miss that era.
yeah carl was definitely #2
>321 - 123 - What the HECK - is bothering ME
KINO
Hilarious ep. I love it when Urkel goes undercover. When he rips the bag of chips open cause they
>offended him
I still crack up. Or when he does that thing where he drops backwards really fast and lands on one hand and springs back up quickly while screaming
>I'M BAAAAD
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKIN AT
when i was born and the doctor slapped me
I SHOT HIM
Kek, frickin' A. Family Matters remains top 3 TGIF shows for me.
>I would
>*cue laugh track*
That's some dark comedy.
Based. This is why we can't have nice things.
I remember when I was a kid seeing the episode when Urkel and Carl turn into Bruce Lee-like ninjas and fight some bad guys in a warehouse. It seemed like the coolest thing in the world and I would fantasize about fighting off bad guys as a ninja.
It helps that it isn't just funny
>Straight black hair of a wig
>Comically Asian Bruce impression from Jaleel
It had fun fight scenes. Jaleel was shredded so the high waisted pants plus white white beater combo legit looked rad. It was one of my favorites as well. I'd get hyped when they showed it re-runs.
i wish me and my friends had a ninja warehouse phase or even ninja warehouse day
>that episode with evil puppet versions of Steve and Carl
That tears it - I'm gonna have to go through FM again soon. I've been going through FH again with the misses and she eyeballed me and laughed when this scene came on. I really miss TGIF.
FM > FH
Of course, it's light years better. I just never finished FH and we were discussing all of the TGIF shows. So we decided to finish it up together. We went through Step By Step last year. That was fun until the final few eps that make no sense and have no resolution whatsoever.
Checked
I don’t remember many details about any of the TGIF shows, but I remember that I thought Uncle Joey was the most annoying character ever.
Dave Coulier seems like an alright guy, but he's legit the enemy of comedy. None of his stuff is funny whether written for him or by him, and his Popeye impression is done way better by Robin Williams. He's apparently a ladies man though. You Oughta Know being about Uncle Joey is still frickin' hilarious.
>Would she go down on you in
>A the-ateeeer
>and everytime I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it
>WELL CAN YOU FEEL IT
Do you remember the episode of Full House where Uncle Joey attempts to break into comedy but gets told he sucks and considers quitting, then his family convinces him he’s funny and should keep trying? His family members were buttholes for lying to him like that.
The Popeye impression sucked, but it would have been fine as a one off joke. So of course they had to do it every episode.
Yeah, he bombs in stand up but they convince him that doesn't matter. That his shitty impressions and woodchuck puppet are the height of hilarity. I mean, he really did make it in real life so he did something right. Who laughing now. No one.
>I mean, he really did make it in real life so he did something right.
Successfully befriending Bob Saget.
Yeah, that sounds about right.
>audience: woooo!!!!!
>that episode where someone painted Black person inside Laura’s locker
Different times. This would be every other episode in a modern show.
>it was outside the locker
How did they paint it between the moment she opened the locker and closed it?
when they walked in the locker was already open
already open
>>only ones who could open it are the student or the staff
obvious inside job
not all lockers had locks
They have to in schools, because of Black folk
hey shaniqua, watcha doin?
I always wondered why Urkel was smiling
He did it. Urkel was the first ever /b/-tard.
It's even better in HD
No seriously why is he making that face, it looks like Urkel really did do it and is looking for approval from the other kids
>>"With my IQ and know-how, i'm gonna get me a settlement that'll make the ADL blush"
He's a comical, lovable goof, and his performance is basically I Love Lucy but on a boy. That's essentially the
>Euhhhhh
face Lucy would make, even it the situation was serious.
>did i do that?
>DID I DOOO THAT
I really wanna know who on the set got to write it, if they were white or black and if they messed up and had to do it again
Who would do this in an all black chicago urban high school?
Uncle Ruckus
Wasn't all black. Mexicans and whites.
Them who be wantin sum of the gibsmedat
>episode aired march 1, 1991
>march 3 1991: rodney king
Tensions were high.
Are you suggesting that somehow Urkel “hey rabbi’ing” a locker somehow contributed to the Rodney King riots? That sounds like slander, and that my friend, is not cool
>Did I do that!?
i coulda sworn i remember the audience going into uproarious laughter at the reveal then realized i must be remembering that from this lol
isn't every student at their school black?
Why haven’t they rebooted this already?
I'm sure they've thought about it, bit they're more interested in taking a beloved show and race swapping it. Can't race swap Family Matters.
Yeah you could. You could make some of them brown or Asian.
They'd never. You're only allowed to raceswap one way. Unless it's Netflix and then anyone and everybody will be changed to black.
It was better when it wasn't the Urkel show. Carl Winslow is in the S++ tier of sitcom dads.
>It was better when it wasn't the Urkel show
oh yeah, season 1 was better huh?
Season 1 is still pretty decent. Especially compared to modern black shows.
Steve is a moron for dumping Myra for Laura.
This whole cast right here thought their show would just be this but then BLAM did I do that ahahahahahahahhahahaaa
Yeah, it was originally supposed to just be all about Harriet as a spinoff about her character from Perfect Strangers, then voila, Urkel time b***hes!
Perfect Strangers is another legit good show. Bronson Pinochet, the creep that he is, is a very talented comedic actor.
>Bronson Pinochet, the creep that he is
what did he do?
He looked at a women without her explicit consent one time
Nah, he's a Joss Whedon level danger to girls/women on set. The kind of guy you don't trust around your wife, girlfriend, sister, or kids. Not some metoo chris angel mind freak bullshit. This is the real deal. Like I said he's hilarious, but after everything that's been bandied about around him I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. Unless it's all bullshit, which it could be of course. Don't feel like searching up all that stuff I came across, but I went down a rabbit hole one day.
The little girl literally gets phased out of existence between seasons and none of them ever acknowledge it; it's creepy.
Yes Jamiee Foxworth would go on to porn.
That was a 90s sitcom thing. Hell, in the 70s and 80s actors/actresses would sometimes play multiple people on a show before becoming regulars, which themselves were completely different characters.
Harriette becomes a completely different person in the last season and everyone acts like everything is normal.
it always weirded me out when that would happen on a sitcom. a character from the first season or two who just disappears and is never mentioned again, even as a kid something about that troubled me lol like WHY IS EVERYONE PRETENDING THAT PERSON NEVER EXISTED?!?!
older brother on Happy Days
Vivian on Fresh Prince
Smithers being black
>Smithers being black
wait WHAT?
Go watch older episodes. Smithers wasn't colored yellow like most other characters until later seasons. He was clearly meant to be black.
In one of the commentaries, they blamed the animators for making him black.
I bet he was always intended to be black but they changed it to avoid him being seen as a “house Black person” character.
The aunt Viv change was actually acknowledged in the show
I like how you continue to make posts like it's the 90s and 80s. Definitely, the world hasn't changed and you can keep larping in your overpriced cubby holes.
Why don't shows have catchy theme songs like this anymore? It was pretty much a requirement to have a good theme song for your show to be considered good back then.
>WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO PRE-DICT-ABILITY
Did I do that
How did Urlel get away with this???
https://youtube.com/shorts/GN6Z3UmvS5U?si=m5-vNjjE977Ar1ZE
Sometimes you gotta TAKE the pussy.
i should have known this would just turn into the n word episode
I mean, it is Cinemaphile. Same way every Step By Step thread becomes about how hot Al was. Having said that, at least some anons recognize the brilliance of FM.
It’s a powerful episode with a powerful message. The writers should be proud of themselves for their work and for spurring challenging discussions about the topic many years later. Kudos to them, the writers, I say. Kudos!
Urkel was the best part of the show until he completely ruined it
He didn't ruin it, the shows staff/writers ruined it. Even when the show sucked the cast was good to great. Weakest actress was actually the aunt. She was pretty bad. Gorgeous, but bad. Harriet was always on point.
She wouldn't have a melee with Jaleel
I read this and then read it again and I'm still not sure what it means, anon.
>have a melee
So get in to a fight. My bad, anon, the wording was a bit odd to me. Crazy if true though.
He challenged her to a melee and she quit when a white person explained what a melee was
>tfw Jaleel White wrote a few episodes at age 19, with one of them being the highest rated episodes for that year
Waldo was funnier than Urkel. Fight me.
The first two seasons are the best. Something about that transitional period between the 80s and 90s is just so comfy.
Fir oldgays, who was better Urkel or the PeeWee man?
I like PeeWee, particularly in the film Big Adventure, but well meaning nerd will always be more endearing than man-child to me.
Who was more popular Urkul or Pee Wee man at their biggest?
Urkel. He was fricking everywhere. Guest starred on multiple shows. Had his own cereal, etc. He was as popular as the Ninja Turtles at thier height I'd say.
On a scale of 1-10 how big was Urkel compared to PeeWee?
Go to bed, Jaleel.
holy frick, how are they so incapable of making a funny skit!
I liked the camping episode
Any ep on a TGIF show where they'd go to a different location(Set change)as opposed to their house was always special. Fresh Prince has a great one where they stay at a cabin and are robbed. I think it's on Christmas.
>that episode where eddie gets beat up by the gang memebers
that was traumatizing
erkel was so fricking annoying, but i guess thats the point
>i thought this show was a meme but its actually legitimately very funny
wait untill you find "ALF"
ALF is the single greatest comedy-anything to ever air on TV, alongside TrailerParkBoys™
The first few episodes of ALF were surprisingly good when i rewatched a while back, but that show gets real bad after that
