does this movie still filter people?

Yes, but it's not a big accomplishment to filter 2024 Cinemaphile

some people want someone to root for. nothing wrong with that. not everyone enjoys displays of nihilism.

I have a theory that the Coen bros are specialized in brilliant writing for idiotic characters. A lot of their characters are dumb, or at least misguided, some naive, some cringy. Raising Arizona are two idiots stealing a baby from another idiot. Hudsucker Proxy is about an idiot that becomes head of a huge company. The Big Lebowski is about idiots fooling other idiots, throwing a ringer for another ringer and so on. And there is range of interesting attendants and cashiers and simple folk in every one of their movies. I love it.

That's just israeli culture. Life is a farce. Everyone is an ignorant clown running around like a moron. There is no benevolent god or objective perspective that breaks out of cartoonish subjectivity.

    >Look how this israeli man who does everything right gets fricked over by the universe and corrupt asians

      Anonymous

      >thinks the main character of a serious man did "everything right"

how is it possible to miss the point of the movie this hard? larry is not a good man who does everything right, he is a coward in every aspect of his life. He is a coward in his job, a coward with his family, a coward with his wife, his biggest sin was inaction. He was not some noble guy who just got screwed over

        Anonymous

He's supposed to be pious, not a coward

Baffling take. He refuses to act and whines about the consequences. When he finally does act, he commits sin, angering God who immediately punishes him. The comedic drama of his life is recontextualized as silly nonsense when faced with death and the death of his son.

"Be good." Larry looks but refuses to accept the simple truth because it isn't spoken in a "serious" manner. Even the young rabbi who tells him to appreciate the parking lot isn't wrong.

Coen bros' entire oeuvre is making fun of White Christians. I mean, they're funny and entertaining, but that doesn't change their theme and obsession with it.

Not really. Maybe in a couple movies but to call it an obsession is a huge fricking stretch

I brought this up in the Burn After Reading post last night but it's kind of interesting where the Coens often have a theme of someone betraying their code or morals and it being the moment that fricks them over completely.

    A Serious Man
    >accepts the bribe at the end
    Burn After Reading
    >pic related breaking into the dude's house after staying out of the business the entire movie
    No Country For Old Men
    >Josh Brolin brings water to the Mexican man
    Miller's Crossing
    >Tom giving pity to Turturro's character and letting him live

i'm sure there are many other examples but these are just off the top of my head
