i get redoing dialogue scenes but you really got to wonder what kubrick was telling cruise during those 90+ takes
I assume he was getting him to do it with variations in speed so that there was plenty to choose from in editing. Or maybe he was just really anal about how cruise would walk in. 90 takes is still excessive but I can kind of get it, sometimes these simple shots are the hardest to make natural
Not in editing per se, but I think he treated acting like if it was theater, he didn't want 20 takes of the exact same thing but slight variations so that he could cherrypick the elements he liked from different takes, then try and get them all in the same take
He was waiting until his subconscious told him he had what he needed. That's how he worked and why he sometimes did so many takes.
