No he wouldn't, he'd basically be getting one cent added to the pile for every year he gets to live.... If the average life span is around 80 to 90 years old, he wouldn't even get a whole dollar.

the caret symbol is a common notation for exponentiation in situations where inputting superscripts is not possible. it was made popular in early programming languages where only a limited character set was present and no formatting was possible, though many languages like C descendants use it for a bitwise exclusive OR operation instead. some graphical calculators use it for aforementioned reasons, and many modern mathematical software packages also allow its use. hope this was informative.

          One penny,
          ....is doubled,
          ............every year.

          0 year = 1 penny
          1 year = 2 penny
2 year = ONE of the two pennies is doubled = 3 cents total
3 year = ONE of the three pennies is doubled = 4 cents total
4 year = ONE of the four pennies is doubled = 5 cents total
5 year = ONE of the five pennies is doubled = 6 cents total

10 year = ONE of the ten pennies is double = 11 cents total

60 years = ONE of the sixity pennies is doubled = 61 cents total

That's not what he's saying, he's arguing that he's being given a doubled amount every year, so he starts with 1 penny, is given 2, then given 4, then given 8 etc. So the end amount is a sum, 2^0+2^1+2^3... +2^n, where n is the number of years AFTER being given the first penny. This can be simplified to 2^(n+1) - 1

        >OP said the sum is doubled once a year, not once a day.

No, he said a penny, not the sum.

He's asking for one penny, to be doubled, per year, for rest of his life.

So after the first year he'd have 2 cents. Then when the next year close, ONE of those pennies "doubles", which is basically another penny. So he'll have three cents after 2 years.

Assuming he's 15 years already and the average life span is about 85 (for argument sake). He's only have 70 cents by the time he dies.

Now if he was asking for the SUM to be doubled per year, he's have $10.24 in 10 years.

        1 year = 2 cents
        2 years = 4 cents
        3 years = 8 cents
        4 years = 16 cents
        5 years = 32 cents
        6 years = 64 cents
        7 years = $1.28
        8 years = $2,56
        9 years = $5.12
        10 years = $10.24

        20 years = $10,485.76

        30 years = $10,737,418.24

        40 years = $10,995,116,277.76

        50 years = $11,258,999,068,426.24

60 years = he'd basically own this planet, if he makes it to old age. Earth's GDP is $90 trillion dollars, so it'll be impossible to earn anything more at this point.

    Year 1: 1 penny doubled = 2 pennies
    Year 2: 1 penny doubled = 2 pennies
    ...
