A consistent theme of pro-season 2 posts is that wax lyrically over how amazing and underrated the season 2 and how baffled they are by the mixed reception without ever actually fricking explaining why it's so good. They come off as elaborate shitposts. At most you'll see a noirgay say it's a great piece of noir but I'm not a noirgay, so I'd appreciate some elaboration

I think it's the same thing with people who think Quantum of Solace was good. You take a few scenes or characters that are cool in isolation and hyper-focus on that while ignoring it wasn't actually implemented well into a cohesive plot.
Basically it's people who just watch select scenes on youtube or something and think the whole thing must be that good.

The story is extremely straightforward: Local politician blackmailed the wrong elites, who are into creepy Eyes Wide Shut stuff. These elites also ruined/ended the lives of the main characters, all of whom were investigating the death of said politician. Turns out the politician was killed by the children of people he once wronged. Also everyone has kids.

Wayne Hays wasn't even some woke frickery at work. Every time he gets quite uppity with Roland by insinuating he's a bad racist white man, Roland shoots him down quite handily and Hays come off as the butthole. Roland calling him an uppity, arrogant bastard was totally heard and the context of that outburst made it actually understandable how close he came to calling him a Black person.

        Anonymous

Once again, you understand nothing, he complained about being racially discriminated against, there were constant references to race this and race that, his son blacked the other woke liberal nutjob, his wife was yet another insufferable wokie moron, and you think because a white detective called him “uppity” and didn’t even finish what he was saying was somehow the show being anti woke?

          Anonymous

          >he complained about being racially discriminated against
And made to look a chippy fool of by Roland. The scene is obviously played to make it look like Hays is being an buttholel to Roland. He otherwise brings up race several times to Roland and ends up getting rebuffed. It's his own chip-on-shoulder bullshit that causes him to be a snarky b***h to a man so patently not-racist like Roland. His wife was a literal 60's hippy, so yes she'd be a lefty c**t. His son's extra-marital affair wasn't portrayed in a positive light and frankly some depiction of a white and black person together isn't intrinsically woke but we are not hyper-sensitive to it in any and all forms because of the heavy handed agenda of the past 10 years where it is portrayed as a great thing, lionises the blacks, etc.

            Anonymous

Back when he was a younger, angrier person, you fricking tool. Another time he asserts Roland was a second away from blasting those blacks at the trailer park vs. whites people before Roland tells him them being black and the times they were living being what they were (like 15 years post desegregation) actually made it less likely him to fire his gun. Scenes like that or that bar one between the two are clearly played with Roland coming across as earnest and being in the white vs. Hays projecting his own insecurities and anger onto a blameless white man

            >a black guy in 1980 Arkansas could never have some legitimate greviances

It's worth a watch and I found it entertaining, but it's a fricking mess compared to Season 1. Very typical sophomore slump stuff, Pizzaman had years to work on the S1 script and a few months to bang out the sequel.

Taylor Kitsch is a fricking terrible actor and drags everything he's involved in down. Vince's performance is entertaining but it doesn't really "work" in any kind of serious way. Farrell is great obviously but has no chemistry with anyone else. McAdams is fine I guess. 4 leads was too much and really muddies up the story way too much, especially when the characters and their relationships to each other don't work.

The central mystery and plot is so ridiculously convoluted and then fairly lame and stupid once you understand the actual background events. Some people will call this a deliberate nod to noir films and it probably is, it just doesn't work as any kind of satisfying story. It might have been salvageable if the characters worked well enough to draw you in to them and their drama, but they don't.

McAdams, and honestly most of the leads, acting was so bland I swear the director was fighting to keep them from doing anything interesting with their characters. People like to act like the plot is super complex, but really its just a fairly simple plot that cannibalizes itself with too many characters and inexplicable pacing.

        >People like to act like the plot is super complex, but really its just a fairly simple plot that cannibalizes itself with too many characters and inexplicable pacing.
This, I swear the people who act like S2's plot was too complicated for dummies to understand and filtered people literally didn't understand it themselves. It's the epitome of that "dumbasses and smart people hate this but midwits love it" meme graph.

True dumbies and smart c**ts saw the first episode and were instantly dissapointed with that gay shit. Cinemaphile midwits having nothing better to do but consoom gaslighted themselves into liking s2 because of memes from the watch threads they spammed with other morons.

What gets me is the main plot is literally spelled out in the first episode, our detectives spend most of their time figuring out that main plot, and then the remaining murder mystery is explained in a super direct way. Everything in between is just bafflingly bad filler. And season 2 defenders take people simply not tolerating dog shit as proof the plot was too complex for most people

        Anonymous

Who cares? S2 has too many characters. 4 main characters + backstory is too much for 8 episodes. Keep Vaughn and Farrell. Get rid of Rachel McAdams and the gay guy. Use the extra time to make the plot more coherent

People knew it was an anthology and were fine with that. They just hoped it would be as good each season, and it wasn’t even close. The mere existence of McAdams’ and the gay cop as main characters is a fundamental flaw with the story that brings it down in quality.

what's with the McAdams hate? I thought the wannabe tough chick cop with hippie dad thing was good, a character who does not let herself "be a woman" having to go through the creepy sex mansion was well done

Audiences rejected season 2 for being too different, so they returned to the well and aped season 1. The laziest play they could have possibly done. Marked the turning point of using the show to pander to plebs rather than creating visionary works of art.

No, they rejected it because it was bad. S3 was an appropriate course correction but Pizzaman unfortunately can't write a conclusion to save his career (literally).

I really really like aspects of s3 and thought it had a decent shot at matching s1 but missed the mark a bit and never feel compelled to rewatch it beyond episode 1 and the ending scene of episode 5 where Ali and Dorff had top tier acting. >S3 was an appropriate course correction
It reduced the show to "content". The cowardice of season 3 killed any chance the show would ever have of making worthwhile art ever again.

Art is the expression of creative individuals. Content is product to meet audience demand. TV shows are made for profit so there's going to be crossover but serving up a repeat of the popular season is the least creative thing they could have done. Just forgettable slop when we could have had a whole new direction again. Would have been better to have nothing at all.

I always had a solution. Basically the mystery was far too personal and devoid of something more sinister. You could have had the Hoyts run a child trafficking ring and Julie was intended merchandise before Hoyt's batshit daughter flipped out and they adopted her. The whole deal being that, as with Rust and Marty, Hays and Roland zero in on something that is a small piece of the puzzle. The lack of a far more sinister mystery/conspiracy jars too much with the actually eerie scenes season 3 did create. Anyhow, as Rust and Marty get their guy but not everybody, Hays and Roland get their girl without really overcoming the Hoyt organisation. Otherwise, it needed Saulnier to direct every single episode, more emphasis on Roland, and far less on Amelia. I still, for whatever reason, love that 30 second ending with Hays in Nam going into the jungle.

                >In the writers’ room, I’d argued with Nic about motivation. Simply put, I don’t believe in it and he does. I don’t believe that a single event can explain the way a person behaves. But in Nic’s conception, every character is driven by a particular engine. Well, maybe this was why. Maybe Nic himself is driven by some early trauma. Though I never discovered its nature, it remains a blank spot in his story that might explain everything.

season 2 was decent. there's lots of stuff to like but the central mystery feels like an uninteresting mountain to slog over to see more details of what is good which is death for a detective show. also like others have said 2/4 of the main characters are boring and it never hits the cohesion and fever pitch of season 1

It was a badly written and poorly acted piece of shit no matter what you say. Just compare almost any shot between season one and two, and you will notice the season 2 shot is just visually dull. Compare the story pacing of each and you will find the same. Every single choice in season 2 was weaker, with the huge exception of season 2 having the best opening.

No point arguing with you morons, you can’t read between the lines, this is what they do now, they try to make you think something is anti-woke by including a little comment here or there but in actuality it’s all a ploy, for example, Black-Cop is asked if he was wrongfully discriminated against for his skin color, he says no (there’s the misdirection) then it’s later shown that he in fact believes he was during a scene from the past, thus proving the interviewer correct, im sorry all of these things go above your heads

I agree that rewatching season 2 when I could see all the hints towards the conspiracy made it infinitely better. Catching that alchy mayor being right about some of the investigation being some buttholes from the state DA/ governors office trying to get money from a Vincy was mind blowing

People knew it was an anthology and were fine with that. They just hoped it would be as good each season, and it wasn’t even close. The mere existence of McAdams’ and the gay cop as main characters is a fundamental flaw with the story that brings it down in quality.
