This. The "equilibrium" is just for the tiny percentage of species that managed to survive the current configuration of a particular ecosystem. There are many more species that have gone extinct than are currently alive. It's essentially survivorship bias to think that all species must achieve equilibrium because it's ignoring all the ones that didn't.
