      Anonymous

It's supposedly party of the game canon, but also nothing that happens in it matters to the games.
They could easily just end it without a crazy cliffhanger or without some big closing event. Just end it on the current planned arc, nothing fancy.

It certainly feels that way. They've definitely been throwing out a lot of one shots and specials as a hail Mary to drum up interest. If there was a final IDW Sonic issue, it'd feature a full panel of Whisper and Tangle kissing telling Sega to frick off.

Imagine the Sonic fan rage if Ken Penders scoops the company up for cheap after bankruptcy and starts inserting his canon into the comics again

      Anonymous

Sega wouldn't give him the license. They'd find a way to void the current contract if they could. If that fails they'll just send some yakuza members to America to pay him a visit.

        Anonymous

They might not be able to. Imagine if IDW has a license to public Sonic comics for say 5 years. IDW goes bust, gets bought out by Penders (ignoring if he has that kind of money) and now has control of IDW's IP rights, including the ability to publish Sonic comics until the contract is up.
In that situation Sega might have some ability to veto creative decisions they don't like (depending on how the contract is worded), but they can't remove the ability for Penders/IDW to mess with Sonic until the time is up for renegotiation of the contract.
In that situation Sega would have to eat crow and wrestle with Penders for years, causing large amounts of Sonic rage.

You’re assuming there’s transferability to the license, almost none of them work that way.

If he was in control like that, the most he could do is just bubble up the sonic characters and write his OCs for most of the pages. And even this would be hard to pull off as Sega still has veto on OCs.

Sega wouldn't give him the license. They'd find a way to void the current contract if they could. If that fails they'll just send some yakuza members to America to pay him a visit.

What is the story with this Ken Penders dude?

        Anonymous

It's a long drawn out story, look up a documentary on him via Youtube if you have the time.
Essentially Penders did some horrible stuff with inserting horribly boring OCs into the Archie Sonic run, was kicked out, counter-sued Sega claiming he owned certain elements of the strip and killed the Archie Sonic continuity. He now exists as a shadowy force occasionally throwing out DMCAs and keeping Sega's lawyers busy.
He is the last person Sega would ever want working on the Sonic series again.

Penders doesn't have money to get his own comic off the ground let alone IDW in a fire sell.

He only got his "rights" because of Archie stupidty, Sega refusing to antie up, and a frick companies Judge.

and yet he has the funds to sue Sega multiple times whenever they try to do anything with echidnas

          Anonymous

It doesn't take much funds to sue a company that doesn't fight back.

People tend to lose out because they can't keep up with how companies drag it out for years or launch just slightly dissimilar countersuits.

Archie's building was pick related when it occurred and Sega sure as frick wasn't going to fund their suits in the mist of tv popularity and 'PENIS PENIS PENIS" crisis.

            Anonymous

Then you look at EA and they got Penders lawsuits thrown out every time. Sega can do whatever they want with Chronicles because of it but they choose to do nothing with it.

but does Sega want to assume the duties of comic publishing on top of their video game business?
Seems like it would be easier to license the comic out and rake in royalties without doing extra work, like they have been doing

Because SEGA doesn't fricking want to
Do you even know how this industry works?
The publisher pays SEGA for the license, SEGA gets money off of license renewals, and the publisher gets money from sales of the actual book
SEGA already got their money from the deal, IDW just needs to make money for themselves on that end

Yes, but this is dependent on the buisness growing, or doing something amazing with the loaned money, or some brilliant leader or strategy. Eg, Google ran on debt for a decade. Musk runs on debt for SpaceX, twitter, and tesla because all that shit has great potential and he already delivered with paypal .

IDW doesn't actually own any valuable machinery, and virtually no valuable IPs. It already made shows for it's big shit. It's got a process for publishing and distributing other people's shit, but how valuable is that and how much is that growing? See the thread on the comics shops closing for perspective.

IDW might get sold off in pieces, or absorbed, but it's not going to survive in it's current form.

EA is also on Disney's watch list but Capcom and especially SquareEnix are far more likely.

They can't buy SE, the Japanese are protectionist and have laws keeping their companies from being bought out by foreign corporations.
If Disney is looking to reenter gaming in a big way EA is the better option, although the amount they would have to pay would put the Microsoft Activision merger to shame.

Thats only if you're part of the royal family, government, JSDF or a bank, entertainment, automotive and electronics companies are fare game (Cases in point: Nissan, Sharp and SNK).

EA means the death of Mickey Mouse as it will mean nothing but Marvel and Star Wars moble gacha shovelware.

And Disney doesn't have that kind of money right now--no traditional media company does.

We all know the cost of borrowing is notoriously low right. They would be stupid not to go for it.

Honestly it's kinda nuts that Sonic is still around with 90% of his games being bad. Every couple years I think he's gonna disappear but then a Mania or Generations comes out and keeps him on life support.

Her rights stay with sega in the case of an IDW bankruptcy with possible rights to make comics with her to the successor or buyout partner, or someone with burrito money.

Japan will completely ignore her. Maybe she shows up in a phone game or racer at best.

The problem with licenseshit is that even if it's popular with it's fanbase, they tend to pirate the shit out of it.
Even if you think IDW Turtles are less talked about than IDW Sonic, the issue is that 90% of those Sonicgays will read it for free. Meanwhile, TMNT has at least some general comic fans who might pick it up.

Why is IDW in particular getting so fricked over? Is it just because they banked too hard on licensed shit?
