The crying lesbians almost got killed in the Egg City story while it was just another day at the office for the game cast (JOBdow excluded). Also the diamond cutters turned into complete idiots around Mimic and Whisper forgot her mask recorded things. Belle is a pointless crybaby, she’s even more redundant now that Sage replaced her as Eggman’s daughter. Whisper and Belle have goals they essentially can never achieve. Tangle is just there. Surge, Kit and Starline were just introduce to job to their counterparts. Lanolin ended up just being introduced to fill the role of a fool with poor judgement and now that's her defining characterization.
Dr Starline was the only one not played for comic relief or a sidekick. He was pretty okay I guess, nothing special. He went out like a little b***h tho

The thing is, they are contradicting the games just by staying in Forces land now.
In the games they are doing a huge push for Shadow getting ready for the movie, putting more SA2 content into the Generations rerelease, and we are stuck with a comic that won't even acknowledge GUN or other non-Eggman humans like Gerald.
IDW hasn't acknowledged anything from Frontiers which totally changed the history of the setting, introduced this weird villain hierarchy lore and essentially introduced Belle But Stronger.
And here we are in the comics focusing on a bunch of nobodies restoring a civilization that we haven't even seen outside of Forces (Funnily enough, the 'evil' alternate reality of New Yoke City from Prime is probably the closest we've gotten to these weird semi futuristic "mobian" cities outside of IDW and Forces.).
There's all this talk of IDW having to play it safe, but it being so stagnant has ironically caused it to become super separated from the other current Sonic related projects.

Big cosmic badguy revealed and implied to be the negative force setting the events of other games like SA, 06 and Unleashed in motion. Seems to almost be a meta contextualization of evil itself.
Ancient civilization who were getting bullied by said cosmic badguy are revealed as well. Their civilization seems to predate any other on earth and they seem to have a connection to Chaos and the Chaos Emeralds and had crazy tech that puts Eggman's stuff to shame (Sonic needs to go Super to fight even the weakest boss in the game. It's revealed that boss is essentially this ancient civilization's standard model giant robot).

They didn't arbitrarily kill him off. His role in the story met it's natural end point. I know Sonic fans are used to these evergreen mascot characters, but sometimes characters don't need to be around past their usefulness towards the narrative. In fact I wish IDW had the sense to send off more of their loose end characters, like Belle.
Starline was okay when he was exploring that little area between being an Eggman fanboy and trying to surpass him, but that ran it's course, and I think he would overstay his welcome if he came back.

We need more competent guys, whether good or bad, there's just no tension in Sonic media anymore. Balancing edginess is fine, but people like Ian just got rid of it entirely, bad idea.
I know, characters acting "human" makes them endearing. You can't make them stoic and strong 24/7. Showing the moments when they're vulnerable is crucial in fleshing out a character. It gives the viewer the full context.

In times of heavy stress she cannot control, I can see her breaking down like that easily. In my experience I just knew some lady friends who broke down in a childish tantrum of sorts. She reminds me of some of them. But to each their own.

I'm familiar with the type, but what I like about Lanolin is that she feels reliable, like she isn't a burden.
Also her outfits are nice, both the girly dress and the more military or work clothes, unlike Rouge or Whisper she doesn't dress too revealingly.

When I design Sonic characters, I try to add some of the behaviors of the species they're based on, take Lanolin for example: She's a sheep. Sheep tend to be a bit dumb and very brave at times, but when they get spooked, or nervous, they can be very clumsy and easy to herd.
Lanolin in the comics just doesn't feel natural to me personally. She's too stoic, too rigid and too smart for how she looks.

If you're ever stuck on trying to find some character flaws in future character designs, especially when trying to make Mobians, see what that animal is all about irl and make a artistic interpretation of it, a mold of the base if you will and you can add in your own details as things progress.

Sally literally takes the opportunity of Sonic's headfirst snappy and attitude to her advantage. Many fricking times. Sally never truly tried to reprehend Sonic. She even states during Iron Dominion for why she likes Sonic. The sheep does none of that.

Sally had horrible writing treatment earlier on. Which is strange. She goes from being a strong, seemingly steadfast leader who begins to have feelings from Sonic, becomes a weird emotional, inconsistent, unstable mess, depending who was writing her, then goes back to what she was but with a more… life-filled tone. That’s the Sally I know. At least her character got redeemed and I love her true self for it.
As for Lanolin… I’m actually interested in her because she’s not a complete character yet. What is her ultimate purpose? Does she end up being a twist villain like Geoffrey St John was and gets more layers for us to enjoy? I hope so, otherwise, why does she even exist other than to be a very unenjoyable character?

Lanolin is still fine but the world isn't built for the character they are giving her. We need a massive cast of villains, different factions both good bad and neutral, and a constant barrage of problems for her and the team to handle with very little down time.

I can’t speak for OP or anyone else here but while IDW has more consistent story telling that Archie, it’s overall boring and drags on way too long.
Stuff like Metal Virus Arc, Scrapnik Island are exceptions but then… just bland. At least with the chaos that Archie had, it could be entertaining and not always be insufferable in its worst moments.
Speaking of Metal Virus, this was not a story meant for this comic. You cannot bring this comic to such a serious turn, turn IDW/Game Eggman into sadistic and cruel Archie Eggman, let him nearly turn everyone into Zombies and doom all life to extinction, and then just let the main cast let him go and it’s all cutsie frenemy time again. The metal virus arc might as well be its own thing separate from the rest of the comic, a different timeline. It’s a great story that puts you on edge, don’t get me wrong. But it doesn’t fit here.
Exactly, all the extitement for IDW, was because it was new, and a new comic series coming after the Legendary run from Archie, but when you look at it objectily, it sucks, IDW is boring, and only 10-20,maybe (Streching it here) 30% is good to "Amazing" (even the amazing parts pale in comparasion to archie, the best of IDW would be just good in Archie) So yeah, im glad people are realizing that, hopully we get something good again, as good as archie, as soon as we drop IDW, i belive maybe we will get that.

The main differences between Archie Eggman and Game Eggman is that the former revels in the evil he causes, while the latter does it more casually. One is seen more evil because more emphasis is put on what he does, even if the other does it similar or the same.

Inherently fricked because of how little Mr. Tinker existed. Only way she could have worked is if they had Mr. Tinker stick around longer and have her be established as his daughter far earlier. Show the two of them helping out (maybe even have them do a big redemption act in the eyes of the world) and then have Mr. Tinker get black bagged and turned back into Eggman. Then have her motivation be turning Eggman back into Mr. Tinker. Have this slowly turn into an obsession until she's a villain with mind control tech she nabbed from Starline trying to brainwash other villains into being good, which causes a morality battle among the cast. This would be a psychotic mess, but it would be an interesting and entertaining psychotic mess, which is more than the current comic is.

I doubt he is. A majority of the comic sucks ass and the only good arc they had was the one they salvaged from the Archie comic. Why even bother introducing all these characters if they're just going to toss them in a bin and go "sorry, it's not our fault we can't use them". Either make a bunch of flavor of the week plots like Archie did until they got more freedom and stop teasing all these characters you can't use or drop the pity act and just use them like you keep pretending you want to.
I was referring to Ian's Archie run. I'm fairly certain that he could make a decent twisted and psychotic story involving Belle and Eggman/Tinker but Sega would never let him.
But nowadays, Ian's spark is gone. Killed by having his work reset twice and then forced to continue on with someone from corporate watching his every move. And I don't really blame him for giving up.

Archie was a mess of countless writers and different tones throughout the years. IDW actually makes sense with its writing and characters compared to archies jumbled mess of character rewrites and retcons.

Whisper and Surge’s writing is just as messy as Archie’s. Surge’s reasoning for hating Sonic and the world changed like 4 times in a short period of time. Whisper was supposed to be some loner strong silent type, now she’s become some crying b***h who can’t do anything without Tangle.
You know you are only drawing attention to Archie in comparison by comparing them endlessly, you should really just say why you like IDW on it's own without letting the previous comic hang over your mind wether you have positive or negative feelings towards it.
I love this, for how much of regard the artist has for the latter two rows of characters and their core substance of design. None of them are deeply redesigned, keeping their charming bits while just drawn per general Uekawa's artstyle.

By the time I find one of these Sonic threads it’s always at 400+ posts and mostly arguing over the OCs or comparing IDW and Archie. That seems unavoidable, but does new art get posted here often enough to make it worth scrolling through?

Whisper and Belle have goals they essentially can never achieve. Tangle is just there. Surge, Kit and Starline were just introduce to job to their counterparts. Lanolin ended up just being introduced to fill the role of a fool with poor judgement and now that's her defining characterization.

The thing is, they are contradicting the games just by staying in Forces land now.
In the games they are doing a huge push for Shadow getting ready for the movie, putting more SA2 content into the Generations rerelease, and we are stuck with a comic that won't even acknowledge GUN or other non-Eggman humans like Gerald.
IDW hasn't acknowledged anything from Frontiers which totally changed the history of the setting, introduced this weird villain hierarchy lore and essentially introduced Belle But Stronger.
And here we are in the comics focusing on a bunch of nobodies restoring a civilization that we haven't even seen outside of Forces (Funnily enough, the 'evil' alternate reality of New Yoke City from Prime is probably the closest we've gotten to these weird semi futuristic "mobian" cities outside of IDW and Forces.).
There's all this talk of IDW having to play it safe, but it being so stagnant has ironically caused it to become super separated from the other current Sonic related projects.

Ancient civilization who were getting bullied by said cosmic badguy are revealed as well. Their civilization seems to predate any other on earth and they seem to have a connection to Chaos and the Chaos Emeralds and had crazy tech that puts Eggman's stuff to shame (Sonic needs to go Super to fight even the weakest boss in the game. It's revealed that boss is essentially this ancient civilization's standard model giant robot).
Seems interesting, reminds me of some fanfics or webcomics made by certain writers...

They didn't arbitrarily kill him off. His role in the story met it's natural end point. I know Sonic fans are used to these evergreen mascot characters, but sometimes characters don't need to be around past their usefulness towards the narrative. In fact I wish IDW had the sense to send off more of their loose end characters, like Belle.

I know, characters acting "human" makes them endearing. You can't make them stoic and strong 24/7. Showing the moments when they're vulnerable is crucial in fleshing out a character. It gives the viewer the full context.

I wanna put a smile on her face after breaking down all her barriers and I want her to cry into my arms as she realizes how much I love her.
In times of heavy stress she cannot control, I can see her breaking down like that easily. In my experience I just knew some lady friends who broke down in a childish tantrum of sorts. She reminds me of some of them. But to each their own.
I'm familiar with the type, but what I like about Lanolin is that she feels reliable, like she isn't a burden.
Also her outfits are nice, both the girly dress and the more military or work clothes, unlike Rouge or Whisper she doesn't dress too revealingly.
When I design Sonic characters, I try to add some of the behaviors of the species they're based on, take Lanolin for example: She's a sheep. Sheep tend to be a bit dumb and very brave at times, but when they get spooked, or nervous, they can be very clumsy and easy to herd.
Lanolin in the comics just doesn't feel natural to me personally. She's too stoic, too rigid and too smart for how she looks.
I can see what you mean, if I ever get around to writing something with Lanolin in it I'll probably try to make her more sheepish.

All characters need to have their flaws is all I'm sayin'. But sure, making her sheepish is a nice starting point! If you're ever stuck on trying to find some character flaws in future character designs, especially when trying to make Mobians, see what that animal is all about irl and make a artistic interpretation of it, a mold of the base if you will and you can add in your own details as things progress.

Sally literally takes the opportunity of Sonic's headfirst snappy and attitude to her advantage. Many fricking times. Sally never truly tried to reprehend Sonic. She even states during Iron Dominion for why she likes Sonic. The sheep does none of that.
Lanolin is just a leader trying to be a leader for the first time in her life, her inexperience shows and that's that. Not at all comparable to Sally.

She goes from being a strong, seemingly steadfast leader who begins to have feelings from Sonic, becomes a weird emotional, inconsistent, unstable mess, depending who was writing her, then goes back to what she was but with a more… life-filled tone. That’s the Sally I know. At least her character got redeemed and I love her true self for it.
As for Lanolin… I’m actually interested in her because she’s not a complete character yet. What is her ultimate purpose? I can’t speak for OP or anyone else here but while IDW has more consistent story telling that Archie, it’s overall boring and drags on way too long.
Stuff like Metal Virus Arc, Scrapnik Island are exceptions but then… just bland. At least with the chaos that Archie had, it could be entertaining and not always be insufferable in its worst moments.
Speaking of Metal Virus, this was not a story meant for this comic. You cannot bring this comic to such a serious turn, turn IDW/Game Eggman into sadistic and cruel Archie Eggman, let him nearly turn everyone into Zombies and doom all life to extinction, and then just let the main cast let him go and it’s all cutsie frenemy time again. The metal virus arc might as well be its own thing separate from the rest of the comic, a different timeline. It’s a great story that puts you on edge, don’t get me wrong. But it doesn’t fit here.
Exactly, all the extitement for IDW, was because it was new, and a new comic series coming after the Legendary run from Archie, but when you look at it objectily, it sucks, IDW is boring, and only 10-20,maybe (Streching it here) 30% is good to "Amazing" (even the amazing parts pale in comparasion to archie, the best of IDW would be just good in Archie) So yeah, im glad people are realizing that, hopully we get something good again, as good as archie, as soon as we drop IDW, i belive maybe we will get that.

The main differences between Archie Eggman and Game Eggman is that the former revels in the evil he causes, while the latter does it more casually. One is seen more evil because more emphasis is put on what he does, even if the other does it similar or the same.

Inherently fricked because of how little Mr. Tinker existed. Only way she could have worked is if they had Mr. Tinker stick around longer and have her be established as his daughter far earlier. Show the two of them helping out (maybe even have them do a big redemption act in the eyes of the world) and then have Mr. Tinker get black bagged and turned back into Eggman. Then have her motivation be turning Eggman back into Mr. Tinker. Have this slowly turn into an obsession until she's a villain with mind control tech she nabbed from Starline trying to brainwash other villains into being good, which causes a morality battle among the cast. This would be a psychotic mess, but it would be an interesting and entertaining psychotic mess, which is more than the current comic is.

I doubt he is. A majority of the comic sucks ass and the only good arc they had was the one they salvaged from the Archie comic. Why even bother introducing all these characters if they're just going to toss them in a bin and go "sorry, it's not our fault we can't use them". Either make a bunch of flavor of the week plots like Archie did until they got more freedom and stop teasing all these characters you can't use or drop the pity act and just use them like you keep pretending you want to.
I was referring to Ian's Archie run. I'm fairly certain that he could make a decent twisted and psychotic story involving Belle and Eggman/Tinker but Sega would never let him.
