I like how one man's quest to storytime all of Archie became this community project to storytime everything. I think the only thing we didn't do is Megaman fan comics.

Not as many and virtually nothing for the Archie MM series.
Fan Favorite reboot-era Archie artist Tyson Hesse had gotten up to a lot of things between Archie getting cancelled (right before coloring was to begin on the final part of the Mega Drive miniseries that he had just finished inking), such as serving as the director on the intro for Sonic Mania. So by the time IDW Sonic started, even though they made sure to get him on, he ended up being too busy (at that point working on the Sonic Mania Adventures shorts) to actually do anything other than covers and some character designs
While IDW did plan on trying to start with a fresh slate artist wise, they did give a lot of the old artists a chance. And as it turned out, when Sega was looking over art tests to approve artists to work on the book, the older artists were consistently the ones they were approving. And this includes Tracy Yardley, at one time THE Archie Sonic artist during the Ian Flynn era

When looking for a writer, editor Joe Hughes figured the obvious choice was to get Ian Flynn, who had been writing Sonic comics for a decade at this point. This isn't actually Ian's first work for the publisher either, as he had written some stories for their comics based on the 2012 TMNT cartoon
While Yardley had experimented with doing his art digitally with Archie's Cosmo miniseries earlier that year (which is pretty alright btw; 2nd mini is better than the first), he opted to work on paper (as was standard with Archie Sonic)
because of this, Jim Amash, the 2nd longest lasting contributor on Archie Sonic behind only Spaziante, was able to return to ink Yardley's art once more (as he had done for the first few years of Ian's run on the main book and on Sonic Universe)
Returning on colors is Matt Herms; buddies with Flynn since before either of them went pro, Herms had become the defacto colorist on Archie Sonic during its later years, coloring the main book during the final leg of the prereboot and Universe (and Boom) on the Reboot (as well as Mega Man). In other words we've got the reboot-era SU art team back together for part of this issue

Now Amash wasn't the only inker on this issue (cross referencing archived ebay listings of physical art Yardley sold, it seems like he specifically did the first 8 pages?); joining him is fellow mainline Archie regular inker Bob Smith, whose sole Sonic credit back at Archie was being one of 3 inkers on an early issue of X (as well as a Sonic-adjacent credit filling in on half an issue of Mega Man)

Now onto the Variant Covers:
For every 10 issues of the standared A and B covers a comic shop orders, they recieve a free copy of a Retailer Incentive cover to sell as well. For Sonic, every 1:10 RI cover has been done by the same artist; the first major non-Archie alumni, Nathalie Fourdraine
while most issues are content with just a single RI cover, the first few issues had a 2nd tier; 1 for ever 25 standard covers ordered.
For issue one, the 1:25 RI was done by Rafa Knight, a regular variant cover artist back at Reboot-era Archie and regular artist for official Sonic social media, though not too long after this bad blood would erupt between Rafa and SoA
Also the layout for this cover was done by then-fanartist Aaron Hammerstrom (going uncredited due to Rafa being the one to hire him rather than IDW, a la a color flatter or inking assistant)
and at the 1:100 tier (this being the only issue to pull this), we get the first cover from Kieran Gates, who at the time was a regular artist for the sonic social media accounts, and served as an artist on Sonic Mania
in 2019 they reprinted issue 1 for Halloween Comic Fest (basically Free Comic Book Day but in the fall, ran by the same people), and used this as the cover
It was also used in a smaller format reprint of 1 for the then GameStop Exclusive IDW Crash Course game.
The comic retailer More Fun Comics & Games got their own cover, done by Devin Kraft (a local artist)
on Free Comic Book Day 2018 (though not officially affiliated with the event), if you went to Spencers you could get an exclusive variant cover free with a T-Shirt that had issue 2's B cover illustration on it
Said cover features the return (though a cover for a later issue he did was already out at this point) of Archie regular Jon Gray, upgrading from off-panel artist to recurring cover artist (paired up with Matt Herms on colors)
This may be my favorite #1 variant.

finally at Tidewater Comic Con they gave out a cover done by UDON regular Edwin Huang, who you guys might recognize for being one of the artists on Worlds Unite. Huang opted to just remake one of his Archie covers, seizing the opportunity to to fix what mistakes he saw in said cover

It was smart. Neutral enough to start with a good foundation that won't bottleneck them better, by keeping some things vague. It works with 1 or 2 worlds shit.
Forces was similar enough to SATAM that if you squint really really hard the comic's almost like a continuation, like with the resistance fighters and recovering from a big war. Much better than just, he's Sonic, he's really fast.

Back at Archie, Adam Bryce Thomas had joined on with the reboot. Initially doing off-panels and stories exclusive to the Digest and Magazine, he ended up taking Yardley's place as artist on Sonic Universe during the final year of the comic.
After Archie ended Sega themselves commissioned Flynn to write a few comics (based on Sonic Team's outlines) to promote Forces and flesh things out. ABT ended up being the artist they got to draw said comics
The first 4 issues of IDW actually released weekly instead of monthly. Not only did this result in the initial 4-parter arc having a different artist each issue, but that would also be too much work for Herms to do in such a relatively short span of time. So that combined with IDW being impressed with ABT's art in the Forces comics meant that ABT got to do his own colors for this issue

Which ones? Because most locations in IDW are specific to IDW. The Sol Dimension is the only one that I recall is actually game stuff, but it's not used for anything until the tail-end of the Metal Virus arc.
Emerald Town, Central City, Ice Paradise, are the immediate ones that come to mind. Multiple Angel Island zones recently too.

I'm happy that kids today just have a straightforward Sonic adventure comic. I was a kid who loved Sonic and when I tried to read Archie I didn't want to see Sonic characters carrying the baggage of relationship drama from the past 50 issues
I'll never forget how confused I was by wtf I was reading the first time I was gifted an Archie book.
Archie reboot has the right idea: no romance drama, no political drama, short and fun episodic adventure arcs in a larger overall story. I still recommend it as the Sonic comic to read coming off of the games
