I think it's been pretty clear that Starline has been over estimating himself which also affected Surge and Kit, their relationship in comparison to Sonic and Tails gives us this clue. Also, simulations can't beat reality.

Yeah we could use more tension. But then again, there was nothing that could be world-ending like the metal virus, or something that could risk killing characters we care about. Well unlless you care about Starline.
We never saw any danger for Surge and Kit so they didnt have any tension. And Belle was just there saying goodbye. Maybe Metal Sonic could have tried attacking her or something.
Thing is, after this issue we are not getting any serious plots anytime soon. In the upcoming covers it looks like Surge will fight Whisper and Tangle, which is just a fight.
Eggman probably dont have anything big planned so far.
Kit will probably just follow the heroes for a while.
And Starline is missing, but he probably will bring something big soon.

Not to go all conspiracy theorist on this, but I do have to wonder if Sega had any hand in determining the outcome of this story and its climax? We know that their mandates in the past have said that Sonic can't really ever lose in the end, but comparisons between this and the Metal Virus saga in how much Sonic was overall affected or put on the backfoot, I can't help but feel like there were some notes handed down from higher up the latter after Metal Virus about how the in-house Sega IP characters were to be handled going forward?
I'm probably way off here, but given past events I can't help but be a bit jaded I guess.

Not even. In OG, Goku obliterated the Red Ribbon Army, Demon King Piccolo, and all of his forces. He spared Piccolo Junior due to his link with Kami and because he could tell he was different. In Z, he outright said he didn't enjoy fighting Raditz. He spares him the first time, and lets him die the second. Goku sparring Vegeta is colossally stupid, though. On Namek, he spared the downed Ginyu force members, and only spared Frieza once he'd reduced him to a torso and an arm, and only after Frieza begged. Goku was leaving before that and felt conflicted helping him. No promise of fighting him again either, Goku told him to crawl in a hole somewhere and stay out of his sight.
With Cell, Goku passed the baton to Gohan, thinking his son would appreciate a challenge as well as he would. When he realized his mistake, he instantly tried to jump in and later told Gohan to kill Cell because he was too dangerous. The Buu saga is where things get messy due to SSJ3 getting brought in later and retroactively making things like the Majin Vegeta fight stupid, but Goku still goes for the kill against Kid Buu.

The Ride was fine because in-jokes, OC's, fancomics and memes filtered out 99% of /sthg/, with only the Archiegay schizo and Boco sticking around and only for the first few threads before the former got repeat banned. Issue 50 is a big deal for IDW and it isn't protected by virtue of being layered in a blanket of impenetrable Ride stuff, so it's open season for schizos.

As for the "bad reception: It got bad reception mostly due to the fact that it wasn't Fleetway,and speaking as someone who followed the Unofficial Ride, that wasn't because Okida hates Fleetway (as was claimed). The man is British himself and literally loves to include Fleetway stuff wherever he can. He also just so happens to love the rest of the franchise (ironically, excluding IDW) as well. Sonic Unbound and Turtle Power plus the GOTF crossover all show that the dude just loves putting every continuity he can together and seeing what fits. And he never acts like he's intentionally making something that is a pure recreation of the original work either, which is why his stuff always heavily diverges into an AU or another.
It's not about defending him as much as its recognizing that Okida loves crossovers and writes what he loves.
My main issue it the comic shouldn't have been labeled a "continuation" of the Fleetway comic. It could've easily been made into his own personal comic where he mixes various parts of the franchise together. Him having Fleetway as the backbone will rub people the wrong way since people would be reading it with different expectations.
And that's fair. I'm not saying that you have to necessarily LIKE Okida or his work. But it's also not a case where Okida hates Fleetway either or meant insult by changing things. If anything, he seems to sincerely love the whole thing, given how many elements from it he's quick to put in his comics like Kintobor, Schizo Super, the emeralds containing heaps of evil energy that can only be cancelled out with the grey emerald, etc. He just also happens to like his crossovers with every other continuity + other stuff and makes no illusions otherwise.

Mmm, on the whole I'm kind of a bit letdown. It's far from the worse that we've seen of any of these comics, but after all the build-up for over the past year or so, to see it all come to what amounts to a single event that gets done away with by the conclusion of the issue is rather disappointing. Say what you will about the Metal Virus arc, despite being drawn out for much longer than it should have been it at least felt like significant upset in the status quo for a time and promoted unique character interactions. Maybe I shouldn't expected something like that with how this resolved itself, but at the same time I'm inclined to look more favorably on that saga. And to be fair, maybe the team putting the books together wanted a break from something that world-changing, which fine, okay. But it still feels like a bit of a waste to have so much time and energy devoted to building up to this book when it felt like to the principle characters this was targeted at it amounted to just a speed bump.
But eh, it's whatever. 5/10

Maybe? I'm not sure what the right call would have been. I think they did fine with building them up with the few teasers that then led into their mini-series, but the end result feels like it was so much energy put into what amounted to a squib. I know that having this whole fight broken up into like individual issues or chapters unto themselves would be asking too much of IDW and readers, but it just felt like all the clashes between characters were managed too easily for it to be satisfying for me.
It feels like this issue was made mostly to set Surge and Kit in their own path. The fight scenes were still good though.
Yeah, quality wise they were still drawn very well, no question. But I don't think they were very memorable, at least, not intended in the way they were meant to be. It felt like Tails won his fight by doing practically nothing and waiting for Kit to exhaust his water supply, which feels like the kind of obvious weakness that he should have been prepared to deal with? And Sonic fighting Surge seemed really one-sided with her expending so much energy where as Sonic just was morally grand-standing all the way through. The mecha fight was maybe the best bit I found, but it kind of led to maybe the moment I liked the least where somehow Eggman, despite having been shown to be rather dismissive of Starline in the earlier issues and incapable of planning things out entirely, was able to predict and counter all of Starline's means of attack. I don't necessarily mind him getting left at the last point we see him, that seems like a natural conclusion for him, as were those of the others - I just feel like there could have been more meatier stakes or something to get us to those points, y'know?
Starline pretty clearly didnt know how skilled either Tails or Sonic were, and never field-tested Kit and Surge enough to deal with those obvious weaknesses.
That feels like a pretty arbitrary summation considering he spent so much time and effort to try to study them, gauge their abilities, and attempt to acquire their genetic material in order to create Surge and Kit to have applicable abilities. Not to mention that he ran them through so many simulations that tested their limits to give them some idea of what they could do.
Simulations are a poor replacement for reality.
I get that - I still kind of disagree with some of it, but I get it. Still though, there needed to be some tension, some chance that they actually could succeed and upset the status quo. As it is it came across to me like there was no chance of that happening because "oh wait, we're the main characters so we win automatically" powers.
Mandates have it so Sonic and company can only struggle purely in the abstract. In terms of actual conflict, they HAVE to win all the time.
Simulations are a terrible replacement for an actual life-or-death encounter, or even just the reality of a fight. Youre even told this in most training exercises IRL.
Starline pretty blatantly had no idea about the actual capabilities of either Sonic, Tails, or Eggman. It's how Eggman expertly plays him like a damn fiddle and destroys his confidence and sanity in one clean stroke during their fight.

Turns out this cover was right all along. Sonic really did feel like the villain of Surge's story despite being the hero. I'd even say their fight reminds me of the first encounter between Jetstream Sam and Raiden, where Sam eviscerated him. In fact, it's super fitting considering Sam is wind, while Raiden is lightning. Alongside Sonic being a smug jackass.
Someone did a recolor that makes Sonic even more like a villain.
When is Surge going to understand that this isn't her world to get vengeance on and that this is HIS WORLD?

It's so shallowly explored that it makes Surge pretty justified in just killing him and and Eggman and being done with it. Each time it gets brought up, it ironically makes him less heroic.
Belle's bit was awful. She showed up to say "I don't need you". She could've been killed on the spot, should've been killed by Metal, but instead, she leaves after getting cheekily stubborn in what I guess was supposed to be a cute scene. Blech. I hope they're finally done with her.

No, they just literally can't do anything with the games barring one-page references or little nods like the Egg Emperor or Starline basing the Tricore off of SONIC HEROES.
Sega just doesn't like them to reference games that are too new. Even older game references get some scrutiny.
It's because they don't want kids who only read the comics and don't play the games, or only have played some of them, to be confused.
You got to remember, you're not meant to be the target audience here. Ian or Evan or even the editors forget that sometimes, but the target audience here is 7 year old kids getting into Sonic and wanting to read more about it.
So much of the beginning of the comic really seemed to expect you to be familiar with Forces though.
Early on Ian was still writing like it was Archie, and he took some time to adjust and learn what Sega prefers. Some stuff he still doesn't get, hence venting in his podcast.
This is a good exit for Surge and Kit. Their characters eventually had to distance themselves from Starline and take their own paths. Besides, this also creates new branches for new stories in the comic.

I don't know, I more got the impression Sonic could tell nothing he could say would really have gotten through to her. Kit's heart obviously wasnt into fighting Tails, but Surge was out for blood and nothing was gonna stop her.
Surge seemed to calm down until Sonic said he wasn't going to take out the doctors and then she got riled up again. He didn't have to say he would kill them but maybe something like joining forces with her to bring them to justice or something. Sonic didn't even care about that. He just wants to stop them and let them try again later. And Surge didn't want that.

I will say that Fleetway Sonic has the best reason to not kill Robotnik. And then after Robotnik is out of the picture, mobians started acting out and using his tech for their own brand of evil or for petty reasons. Really says something about society.
Yeah, I can see why now. Fleetway was a dick, but he took his job seriously and was pretty much implied to view it as atonement for Kintobor. Hell, it might even be in part why he acts like such a grumpy butthole to his friends; it was his actions that cost him his first and dearest friend in Kintobor, so he doesn't want a repeat of that.
Meanwhile, Archie is an egotistic narcissist underneath the heroics and is doled up on loads of PTSD that he expresses pretty violently when pushed, which makes him a lot like Surge ironically. And IDW is the moralizing c**t unable to actually back up his hollow ideals. So yeah, those two are definitely worse. IDW probably isn't as bad as Archie or SatAM get at their worst, but he's a grade A butthole.

I tend to feel like that the "butthole pretending to be a nice guy" descriptor fits IDW Sonic as well. He just seems to blow off all these adventures like they're nothing, even if his friends are zombified and children like Surge and Kit are turned into killing machines against their will.
He's pretty shallow as a character and knowing the mandates, he'll never grow. He had a perfectly fine character arc where he would learn to really crack down on his enemies and he not only didn't do that but he completely brushed off the feelings of Surge and just went on about his ideals.
I've felt that having so many suicidal "gotta give the villain another chance" moments has seemed pretty dumb, but I suppose I can respect Sonic's reasoning here

No. Even at his some of his worst moments emotionally or socially, Archie was capable of talking to people experiencing a breakdown pretty reasonably assuming he wasn't pushed into one himself. He could understand the feelings of others, he just wasn't the best at responding to them.
IDW Sonic is so high off of his own shit that he's physically incapable of realizing that others aren't going to be able to adapt to his morals or that they have problems that can't just be addressed by letting go and pretending that everything is perfectly okay.

Even if he's an ass or an autist, Sonic is the very definition of a good guy. He's just one with an attitude and some character flaws.
He's definitely a good guy, but chaotic/neutral/lawful isn't really a helpful distinction in general. Ultimately, like any protagonist, Sonic does what he thinks is the right thing. Chaotic/Lawful really just covers how much a protagonist is willing to defer to external authority, and most protagonists won't defer to external authority since it makes them less relatable.
Rebooted Infinite is helping Sage from behind the scenes just to further frick with Sonic. It’s heavily implied by visual design (their red left eye, their missing right eyes, white hair, black clothing/aesthetic, and artificially red body parts) that the two are connected and Sega absolutely made sure Infinite was locked up tightly in a vault till he gets properly finalized.
The big reveal/retcon for forces’s story is that Infinite manipulated the memories of Shadow and EggMan during their meetings about being this legendary mercenary. “When everything YOU KNOW (Eggman and Shadow) has come and gone. Only scars remain of WHO I WAS.” So what’s truly underneath that mask isn’t a fallen mercenary, a man he wanted to be in the war, he is a mere child eternalized as a being of pure agonized data. “I’ll never end, and that’s the difference between you and me.”
