If I want to get into Go Nagai's 70s Super Robot works (Mazinger, Getter Robo, Steel Jeeg, Groizer X, etc.) is it better to read the manga or watch the Toei anime? The manga versions appeal the most to me because they're shorter and I imagine they stick more to whatever his creative vision was, but I'm sure the anime have their own merits too.

Honestly the manga kinda sucks, Nagai didn't really give a shit about Mazinger. All his energy was focused on Devilman at the time
The Toei staff took his barebones manga and turned them into classics

I’ve hard way better things about Gosaku Ota’s manga, sure would be nice if it HAD FRICKING RIPS!

        Anonymous

It has rips but there’s no translation. I’ve read the Great Mazinger one in English and it pretty good. Grendizer is good too but you can tell Ota wasn’t a big fan of Duke Fleed and just wanted Koji as the protagonist.

Care to link those rips then?
Ota's Grendizer is translated, Ota's Great has rips, but all I can find for Ota's Z is the first chapter in English & a VERY sloppy French translation of the first couple volumes.

Nagai mangas are fine for Mazinger, Getter Robo's great and you were given the reading order, Toei show's surprisingly good so far and it's been recommended over the 7ep Mazinkaiser OVA which you can still watch to get the spirit of Mazinger in a very condensed form. Shin Mazinger is also a great remake. For Getter, Getter Robo Armageddon, New Getter Robo, and Shin Getter Robo vs Neo Getter Robo are must-watch as well.

Theoretically going to machine-translate Z and Great at some point (English scantlations exist for Grendizer).

I have Mazinger Z volumes 1-4 in Italian and 5 in French, and saved the individual pages for all 4 volumes of Great, I'm uploading that to a mega. Including the machine-scantlated chapters for Great but it's hilariously garbage (picrel).

                I'm sorry

I'm afraid that French 5th volume is just 1 chapter.
Still though, thanks a million, hopefully the full 5th volume exists somewhere.

What? For Z? Oop, I saw the thumbnail and uploaded the wrong file, my mistake. The folder should have French vol5 separately now, vol 1-4 Italian is uploading right now, while I got rid of the incomplete Euro zip. The Z stuff was a b***h to find bc the French site had dead links and I had to ask an Italian in Italy to search for vol1-4. Think it might be easier to translate from Italian to English since it's Latin-based and I've retained very little of French.

It was an ordeal and the only stuff in archives was anons pointing to the difficult French scans website, it's not something I'd want people to go through. I only wish I had vol5 and Great in Italian since it's easier to work with. Here's hoping I can get any work done at all for this, apparently this trilogy has actual continuity, so I really don't want me or anyone to read Grendizer before enjoying Z and Great! I just wish there was an easier way to pull the text from pages without having to add pages individually or have to reorganize the text order.
Alternatively, if you think the google scantlated stuff is fine I can try putting Z through it also, picrel again.

Also I'm legitimately tempted to keep in some dogshit like "FRICK BY KENZO KABUTO" and the last two panels for poor Gorgon, there's something endearing about it the same way as "Age of Fatso" and Duwang. Also a bit worried about paraphrasing things TOO much and accidentally taking liberties, and rewording every bit of dialogue to suit the character's voice and context seems like legitimately too much work... I just want it to be grammatically legible and just be able to strain through these good stories. Think vol5 has like, Dr Hell's origins, and Great has a Mazinger army of Greats, lots of exciting things to get to!

Nah, I've been translating toku manga so far, specifically Daiji Kazumine's adaptions of Spectreman & Denjin Zaborger.
The former I've been doing for nearly a year, https://mangadex.org/title/a481c2f1-3774-44f1-b797-73ffebca1bfe/space-ape-gori-vs-spectreman
& the latter I've only just started. https://mangadex.org/title/0318551d-9498-4a7c-9ada-166ca0ea9921/denjin-zabogar
I've made it explicitly clear at the beginning of those translations that I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL.
& if you're at all interested in reading, the earlier chapters of Spectreman can be pretty rough presentation-wise but I swear I've improved.
At any rate I can't wait to do Ota's Mazingers once I'm done with either one of my current projects.

Btw here's an Archive upload with those European Z rips, Japanese Great rips, & the Spanish comics.

                >have to space things out so I forget about the story and thus don't "spoil" anything for myself

I've been told that the chapter order on the version of Nagai's Mazinger manga available in English is totally fricked, this true?

      Anonymous

No, in the sense that's it's standard version that's been printed since the 1970s
Yes, in the sense that it combines and rearranges both of Nagai's Mazinger serializations

  11. 8 months ago

The Mazinger Z manga is an enjoyable little romp to familiarize yourself with what Mazinger's all about. It's not as good as most of the other incarnations of the series, but it's a solid starting point.

Mazinger Z: watch the anime AND read the manga
Great Mazinger: Skip the anime and read the manga because it's too childish and generic.
Grendizer: watch the anime and skip the manga because it's unfinished and the art is terrible

Getter Robo: It has one canon, the mangas. You can watch the Toei anime and OVAs at your pace since they aren't related to the manga and aren't connected (except the 70s Getter and Getter G)
