If I recall the term came to be with the son's and daughter's of Mexican immigrants born in the US back in the 60's.
Hispanic is a catch all term for any sort of person from Spanish speaking countries either immigrating to or born in America. The Latter was seen as insulting the same way Latinx is today, as both a Mexican American, and Cuban American can be Hispanic.

I Think 1st/2nd gen makes more sense. 2nd or 3rd gen are mostly so Americanized at that point the subject of their heritage is simply a mention at that point.
Although it was my grandparents and their parents that first came here, both sides of my family are Mexican and I speak with my abuela almost exclusively in Spanish. We still keep in touch with our relatives back in Mexico, and I do what I can to stay connected with our heritage. My parents taught me early on to remember the meaning of the lessons and experiences of some among our relatives. It saddens me to see that it's become very easy for some people to lose that element of growing up. When that voice actress for Tater said what she did, I felt ever more grateful for having the family I do to make sure I didn't end up that lost.

My great grandfather was born just before the Mexican Revolution, which was one of many reasons why he went through the struggles and adversities he did to bring my family over to the United States. He was and is one of the wisest and most admirable men I've ever known, and nothing could ever hope to replace the compassion and intelligence he emanated with just his presence. Although he passed when I was little, he taught me so many things that stick with me to this day. I don't want to imagine how he would react to something like this.
