I saw this firsthand. A guy named Brendan killed himself in our junior year and all throughout senior year people were making jokes about "pulling a Brendan" to get out of exams and shit.

When I was in middle school a classmate committed suicide and everyone started crying in the school the day we got the news (like bawling our eyes out, which made people cry even more and it was a whole feedback loop) but then after a week or two life just went back to normal and nobody ever talked about him anymore after a couple of months.
