This movie would 100% be called "woke" if it was released today.
In the book, it's a male elf called Glorfindel who helps Frodo escape the Nazgul.
But in the movie they made it Arwen because they wanted a LE STRONK GIRLBOSS character.
Arwen is barely mentioned in the books.
and she'd be overweight
and she'd be smarter than all the male characters
and for some reason Frodo or Boromir would have a problem with her being female, so she can talk for a full 3 minutes about how capable she is
and at the very end, when Frodo fails to destroy the ring, she would swing across Mt Doom on a jungle vine, snatch the ring out of his hand, and slam dunk it into the lava while screeching "GIRLS GET IT DONE!"
and then Aragorn would refuse the crown of Gondor and give it to her because she would make a better ruler
and then all the elves that left for Grey Havens would come back to Middle Earth to be her friend
that's what a "strong female character" is in 2023.
The central structure of Macbeth is the title character going to the witches and receiving prophesies that he then acts on and that come true with monkey paw twists.
Later on in the play, when shit is turning against him, he goes to them and gets prophetic reassurance that "no man of woman born" could kill him. Macduff, his enemy, reveals during the final battle that he was removed from the womb by c-section so was technically brought into this world by a man, then kills him. Tolkien apparently thought this was a cop out so he removed the of woman born part and had a woman get the kill.
Almost like being woke is not a guarantee factor that a movie would be bad.
The problem is that most writers and directors are hacks and can't properly balance this out.

It was the reason and at one point they were planning on having Arwen show up at Helms Deep with the other elves. They had her training to do sword fighting and were about to film when they decided against it and did the whole dream sequence to have her in the movie. It could have been a lot worse.
