they do, the thing is it peaked in the late 90s, early 2000s. For some reason (maybe appealing to a broader normalgay audience or having to get budgets from executives that don't understand it) videogames became movies with shooty parts inbetween scenes and this started to define the whole medium. Now what is considered the best video games ever are bullshit melodramatic soap operas with quick time combat or whatever.
My favorite game containing a story is ffviii. I really like the world design, the cool areas you get to explore, the writing, for a game, is very good. That said, it can't touch a good novel, or a good film. Video games aren't inherently capable of featuring good writing it's more a matter of we haven't had good writing in movies for 50 years, haven't had good writing in novels longer than that, before men gave up on the medium, my favorite authors are Stendahl, Faust, Balzac, that's all early 19th century for example. Gaming being a relatively new medium never stood a chance, so its best bet was never to try. Give me contra, give me golfing, give me Mario, and don't spend one minute taking me out of control, it's an interactive medium, looking at you half life 2 you piece of shit game
At the end of the day gaming has always felt like a bunch of kids being upset that their dad's didn't recognize their medium as having value and having a huge chip on its shoulder
