Very cute. Harriet in two entirely different styles of her time. Disguising is exactly the kind of thing she'd have to do when getting up to her spying.

I bet she'll get invited to teen parties and instead of trying to be cool or fit in or whatever, she just wants to spy on them, so she dresses in something she thinks will just blend in, and she ends up standing out and looking like a crazy fashion nut instead of a regular 70s tee-
hang on, I did the math wrong, didn't i. She'll be a late 60s teen. by 1970 she'll be 18 and that is too late!

Going to need more examples of Rebel Beth Ellen being a jerk to the others (such as calling Carrie Andrews "fatty" and threatening her hand with a fork after she tried to swipe the last chocolate cake in the cafeteria after cutting Beth Ellen in line).

I've been thinking of 3 minor scenarios of people walking all over Beth Ellen and treating her like she's invisible (as well as a major event that would help push her to becoming a rebel).
      >Minor: She always gets picked last in gym activities, sometimes forced to sit on the sidelines while the others play dodgeball.
      >Minor: People keep cutting in line in front of her in the cafeteria, swiping pieces of chocolate cake before she can get a slice
      >Minor: Unsure about the 3rd minor event. Any thoughts?
      >Major: She promised her sister, Martha, that she would attend an important event of hers (like a dance recital, a spelling bee, or a play), but is then forced by Marion to attend something else at the same time, causing her to miss her sister's big thing. This makes Martha super mad at her, making Beth Ellen feeling guilty and small, realziign just how much people walk all over her.

Martha is Beth Ellen's younger sister and is considerably smaller, she's definitely younger than 11.

Deepest lore: Her obsession with France is a nod to the fact her and Beth Ellen's mother lives there in the books. They live with their grandmother.

Another idea for a potential Beth Ellen episode would center around her complicated relationship with her mother (who is named "Zeeney" in the book, but I think she could be called "Vanessa" if she appeared in the show, since it sounds like "vain").

Also, Martha would play quite a huge role in the proposed Rebel Beth Ellen episode; she'd be the genesis why Beth Ellen becomes a rebel in the first place (Martha would be upset that Beth Ellen didn't attend her play, spelling bee, or dance recital because of Marion's insistence of dragging B.E. along for a scheme of hers), as well as the genesis in what causes her to stop (she accidentally gets punched in the face by Beth Ellen during her final scuffle with an angry Marion).

The more I think about it, the more I'd like to see "The Long Secret" adapted as a longer form special. It would be hard to drag out to series length, but I think it might work in that format.

are you kidding? they'd be the best of friends
though it does depend on the time travel shenanigans involved. is P. Ann teaching Harriet about video games? or are we just pretending they're both from the same time? In which case, would Harriet already fricking love gaming? they would at least read comics together, for sure.

        Anonymous

I’d just have it be crossover frickery. But depending on which reactions you find more interesting. You could have them be from the others respective time. Though with crossover frickery it would likely make for more fun interactions between the two. Like seeing how Harriet would react to “modern” gaming as an example. I get the gut impression she might get so absorbed into it she becomes a neet of sorts.

          Anonymous

yeah I can definitely see Harriet having more of Doug's experience with gaming.
man Doug and Pepper Ann really needed to cross over. Those two are made for each other. and for that matter, Doug and Harriet. real similar peas in these pods. That's probably why this new show feels so cozy and good, we hadn't had a good "kid is a fricking weirdo and always imagines his or her self as something more important" show in a while.

            Anonymous

I’m sure her spying instincts would eventually override her new found gaming ones. But until then I imagine she’d be a disheveled mess with all the late night gaming.
            >Doug and Pepper Ann really needed to cross over.
Both shows were airing at the same time at one point so it could’ve happened. I’m surprised there wasn’t even a respective cameo for either. Unless I’m forgetting. As for Harriet though, it be great if it ended up getting a third season. Or hell even a special. Not sure how likely that is to happen at this point. But man it be wonderful if it did. It was a joy to watch.

              Anonymous

it was good but I'd rather they start a new series based on a different book than run this into the ground.
Yes it would have been nice getting like six seasons before finally getting to the end of the book where Ole Golly leaves, making a perfect finale, but.. that isn't really feasible today. We're lucky they stretched it into two. But this one's over, it hit its perfect finale, and there won't ever be a better stopping point.

                >anyone know any good classic pieces of literature Henson should adapt next? ideally with fun weird girls
It isn’t even close to being a classic but Franny K. Stein was the first thing to come to mind for me. Mostly because of the weird girl part. Also Dear Dumb Diary. Though I can’t exactly remember if the protag in that was a weirdo. Also not a classic so take that as you will.

                Anonymous

totally, I also want more Harriet.
it's too bad going back and doing midquels on shows isn't a thing. though that would still be kind of unsatisfying.

All the weird kid stories I can remember that would make good shows were about boys. Shoebag, Maniac Magee... I forget who the protagonists of Onion Joe were, I think it was just some random kids.

                Anonymous

Beggars can’t be choosers so I’ll take whatever I can get. But yeah from the books I’ve read over the years. I can’t really think of many that featured a weird female protagonist. Let alone one from a classic novel. So I’m stumped to say the least. Though I’m sure whatever they derived to adapt next will turn out good. Hopefully. Although do we even know what their working on show wise? Assuming they are at all that is.

I wouldn’t say European. To me it feels like a PBS show that wasn’t forced to be educational.
The art style, animation, and vibes are just very PBS

a lot of recent PBS shows have figured out how to capture book style illustrations with only semi-compromised animation, yeah. same kinda vibes as Martha Speaks.

Speaking of which, how would a new Madeline series do well in these times?

I like to think she would dress more Breakfast Club and would have people giving her the 80s equivalent of "how do you do, fellow kids" meme. Maybe she'd be more of an Elaine type. Elaine felt like a chick who might have been Harriet as a kid. But that was the 90s..

How do you suppose Harriet and Marion's past friendship ended? It was said they were friends in the past, and that according to Harriet, Marion dumped her when they were in the 3rd grade, but also said that some friendships end naturally with no one to blame for it.

Personally, I believe both had a hand in it. I like to think that they blame each other for the end of their friendship, with Marion accusing Harriet of being such a sore loser whenever she wins anything and is never happen for her successes, while Harriet blames Marion for being such a sore winner who rubs her victories in everyone's faces (including/especially Harriet's).

Harriet was probably being a little annoying and Marion took the opportunity to boost her social standing, a thing she had just discovered.

What, I sorta was lurking but...this show is a period piece in the 1960s? I had no idea. Color me kinda interested. Does it have alot of pop culture references to the time?

      Anonymous

      >i had no idea
they don't beat you over the head with it like a lot of period pieces. also there are a few anachronisms (canadian coins that didn't yet exist, black kids going to a rich private school, etc)
      >pop culture references
just a little, most of it was more like, referencing the type of entertainment at the time. Her dad runs an SNL-esque variety show at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, i'm not sure what they were actually filming there in the 60s that presumably led to SNL... and we get to hear a little about the music industry back then, the way sometimes the original composer of a song didn't get credit when someone bigger did a cover, etc..

I wish more cartoons were period pieces of anywhere between the 1970s to the mid 2000s. Much of the tech sorta stayed the same.
After smartphones came in, so much changed 2010s going forward, alot of stuff went obsolete.

a couple good recent shows have either been or seemed to be 2000s period pieces, but you always get some anachronistic PC garbage because they couldn't be bothered to look up the period-appropriate PC garbage people spewed back then. Maybe because the evidence of mind-changing sort of undermines their position.

I'm guessing those used in a backyard pool, "swim" goggles, were not made until that time. "Diving" ones as seen above were available before that time, and were available to the public I assume.

        Anonymous

oh okay, so it's a quibbling distinction. Products are made of that all the time.

          Anonymous

The main distinction is that diving ones will cover your nose, because they are used in conjunction with air tanks to go diving so all areas are "sealed off". Swimming ones just cover the eyes and are for more casual use at the pool or beach or whatever.

            Anonymous

oh thaaaat makes sense. somehow I thought you meant high-diving, and i'm like "oh sure, so water doesn't go up your nose" because I'm an idiot sometimes.

              Anonymous

Haha. IIRC they use the swimming type ones, because the larger diving ones would be too bulky, and I think they just use a nose clip or something to prevent water up the nose.
The diving ones could be bought for recreational family use too, cause really, water up your nose sucks in either case.
So Harriet wearing the oval diving ones pictured in those vintage covers would technically be more correct.
I assume the show takes place in the mid 1960s. It a safe bet when a period piece show happens, its usually in the middle of the decade, as if you have it close to the edges, sometimes you get too much overlap from the previous or upcoming decade.

It’s set during 1964. They visit the New York World’s Fair, that wasn’t yet open in ‘63. Also Agatha Plumber styles her dogs like the Beatles presumably to cash on on the trend, and ‘64 was the year the Beatles really became popular in the US.

I always kinda wanted creepy crawlers too, but not enough to invest that much present-money into it by asking for one, when I could get cool robots n junk.
My dad grew up in the 60s and he said he wanted an easy bake oven so he could get some fricking -food.- both of my parents had trouble getting enough food, because he was put on a diet so he could like, wrestle at a lower weight class or something, and her fatass sister ate everyone's food including her dad's... i was hungry growing up too but because of my damn metabolism.

this led to a fun little trip through comics history. it's weird just how much of classic Batman stuff was left behind in the golden age FAR further than we'd think. in Harriet's day, this is the closest there was, Selina "The Cat" was a thing of the past until a couple more years...
either way a proper catsuit is a lot more fun. Harriet might independently think of the idea of making it literal by adding ears.. she's gotta fit the theme after all!

my work ethic prevents me from turning down money unless it's something really really awful. and it generally isn't. My general rule is if it would A) take a long time to finish and B) involve material that makes me sick if I'm staring at for that long, then I politely decline. Multiple brief instances count as a long time, and boy do some of them like repetition.

That scene was so adorable that made me cry a little. Beth hugging Harriet was so sweet and Rachel giving her lollipop was BASED.

I also wish they did more for both. Maybe have that Rebel Beth Ellen episode, and the episode ends with Harriet recapping how much she's grown since ditching the rebel phase and becoming more confident and assertive, while still being kind and nice with others. Beth Ellen still hangs out with Marion and Rachel, though...
      >"... but not tonight! she writes in her notebook."
Harriet then climbs into bed, with Beth Ellen sleeping with her for a sleepover.

There is a season 2. I watch on wcostream, I dunno what works for you
      >Yuri
      go away
      >Watching each other pee
.. alright you can stay. but you need to understand that's normal exploration. it's not an identity, it's not changing the fundamental yin and yang of men marrying women. it's just a little innocent curiosity

Harriet is such a sperg that it's clear her "nanny" is just a tard wrangler. It's cute how much of an embarassing autist she is

that is all nannies have ever been. didn't you see Mary Poppins?

      >Is there a season 2 of this show?
      There is.
      https://mega.nz/folder/ixNAkb7Q#O-8xX1XhdR-yLa2FHAd2Lw

Regarding any continuation, as of the end of Season 2 the story of the book has been told in its entirety, so much as I would like more Harriet I'm not holding my breath. There are two sequel novels, "The Long Secret" and "Sport" focused on Beth Ellen and Sport (obviously) but they deal with heavier concepts (puberty, divorce, family issues) focus on those characters' home lives and families and most of the characters from the first book aren't even present. It's not impossible they would get adapted, but I think both would be a fairly big departure from the Harriet we know.

It is interesting to note that despite having a very minor role in the first book, Beth Ellen seems to have been the breakout side character both for the author and for Anons here. Guess she's just that lovable.

        she's adorable and gentle.
though it is hard not to be angry at someone who chooses to side with a cruel person out of fear instead of a friend out of love. but these people can't help it.

hope you saw it, my good anon. if you don't have Cinemaphilex, you should get it.

    >don't ever say I never give ya nothin
I certainly won't, thank you very much for taking the time to provide the higher res files, and to edit the fins again.

    >now finally, catsuitery can happen. last chance to think of something funny to do with it beyond just a pose..
Oh you were asking for the type above?
    I liked this one

so the question is... high-collar v-neck jackboot catsuit?

Not sure why they were called catsuits. As for what do to? They look like something you'd wear when riding a motorcycle...or in her case, a bicycle.
Or you know in some cartoons they are lowered down to steal diamonds? Could also have her doing that but its not diamonds its something closer to show related.

the internet claims, and I have some doubts, that it literally comes from Catwoman in the comics
my reason to doubt that is: pretty sure Catwoman didn't even WEAR a special costume in the golden age, or if she did, it wasn't a catsuit. Not til '66 when she was reintroduced to silver age batman

Iunno, wish I could be more helpful but if I just say what I want then it kind of takes the fun out of drawing for others. i guess embarrassment and exposure rank pretty high, anything cute and innocent and sweet and silly, shenanigans with friends, all of that.
right this second I'm actually really wishing my skills were up to snuff enough to do some of the Gravity Falls stuff I've wanted to draw for Cinemaphile. workin on it...

I do periodically take a peek in there (mainly because sometimes there's a Harriet request) and I gotta say it has really changed... Don't wanna insult anyone, but I think the psychological demographics have kinda skewed since the last time I checked.

                >Don't wanna insult anyone, but I think the psychological demographics have kinda skewed since the last time I checked
That's a very polite way of saying it's now full of low functioning autists spamming literally hundreds of requests for every one delivery, then complaining it's not exactly how or as good quality as they wanted when they do get one. I think most drawgays avoid it now and just draw for the threads that interest them.

This is why I hang around in the /vp/ drawthreads because they hardly got any stupid drama and nonsensical requests going on there. I'm pretty sure Cinemaphile and the others are also like this, but I haven't saw them yet.

I know what you mean. I’ve been self teaching myself since 2017, and the draw thread used to be where I’d get prompts for practice after a week of studies, even got to see my art as OP once, but these days I can’t find anything I’d ever want to draw in those threads and the people in them really make it seem not worth it.

The kind of turboautists who camp out in the drawthread, arguing with each other about their requests being shit and with drawgays when they actually deliver, are the last people I would ever want to draw for. It is genuine autism, they seem to think other people only exist to do exactly what they want them to and if they don’t then they throw a fricking tantrum. There is no satisfaction to be had from catering to people like that.

Yeah these days I exclusive either draw my friend’s OCs, or fanart I never post. Last time I drew for a thread people complained for getting minor details wrong on the character as if you’re only allowed to draw 1:1 on model

So what are some more cartoons that FEEL European?

      Anonymous

I think it's a mistake to just accept that Harriet feels European because OP thinks it does. I don't think there's anything about Harriet that stands out as more European than American, and I say that as a non-burger. It might feel more old-fashioned because it's set in the '60s based on a book written in the '60s, the stories aren't ADHD fast paced and the character designs aren't calarts garbage. I think the question you should really be asking is
      >what are some more cartoons that feel original in concept and art style and are well written?

      Anonymous

Fro some reason, I sometime see an old cartoon called Wayside as very British. I don't know why, but I guess it's probably the show's style of humor that made me think of it.

That's because it IS Canadian; their sense of humor tends to be a blend of American and British humor.

If you don't want to be called out on your nonsense then don't talk nonsense. OP sounds like those hipsters who say that San Francisco is more like a european city in the South Park episode Smug Alert.

        Anonymous

Anon, if your knee-jerk reaction to seeing the word "European" on Cinemaphile in relation to a cartoon is to spout off about immigrants then it might be you who is the one talking nonsense.

          Anonymous

I am actually european. You people who attribute meanings to "european" without having ever been here come off as obnoxiously ignorant like the people who think anime is an accurate representation of Japan.

            Anonymous

So am I. Surely you’re able to understand the context of OP meaning that he thought it felt more like a Euro cartoon stylistically and nothing to do with fricking socio-political issues?

Kek this show really is bratkino. I miss this low stake conflict shows. Maybe that's what makes it feel European: American shows tend to raise the stakes too often so when one focuses on small scale stuff like this it feels novel.
