I think the reason these guys had the staying power they did is because they never strayed from their sense of humor to try and have more of a mass appeal.
They were creative for the sake of being creative. It was weird and unique to see someone wearing a hoodie with the cheat on it. They werent aelling ads and barely selling merch. They just really enjoyed making cartoons.
every time I see a youtuber do an ad read - oh, excuse me: a "partner" "collaboration" - I die a little inside. I miss the old internet.
Even when they "sold out" it was some solid work, and the humor stayed on brand

They probably should have taken the TV series deal. It might have killed the vibe for the website but it also might have been great. And it was the early 2000s so the woke mind virus would not have been a factor.

Anon they wouldn't have retained the rights if it failed, they would've lost a character they made to read silly stories to their kids for some paltry sum. Homestarrunner is an icon, giving it to yidney would've been the biggest bonehead movie, even if they aren't developing as much stuff they still put some nice stuff out here and there while raising a family. Plus disney would've fricked up what makes it funny, laughing at a moron.
