Im not ashamed that I love Jackpot

CBR forums are going crazy about hating the new Jackpot I special issue and Mary Jane’s new status quo.
Screw them. I love her.

I personally find nothing redeeming about it. People have been pretty vocal of how they don’t want 616 MJ as a superhero and this entire thing is attached to a run that has done both Peter and MJ’s characters dirty. It’s really a terrible idea to try selling people in this

Look, I don't hate MJ as Jackpot, but this is a concept that actually doesn't work. There's two big problems here:

1º) Her outfit suit her, but it makes her look like a blackjack dealer on a casino, and that's kinda ridiculous. When I met John Romita Jr last summer, I comment him <<I see MJ like this, all I can think is "Viva Las Vegas">>. He cracked out laughing.

2º) Her powers are too unpredictable, and they are not trustworthy. I mean, you can get something incredible like warping reality or something stupid like turning into pudding. Many compare this with Ben 10, but at least Ben knows already all his alien forms. MJ as Jackpot can get anything and there's no way to know if it will work. Also, there's the imminent danger of the three skulls.

And her first issue already proved a big problem. Her power comes from a device, and without that device, she's powerless and she can easily die. And if someone attacks that device, there can be a disaster.

So, sorry, but this is my final evaluation:

    - Mary Jane as Jackpot? BAD
    - Mary Jane as Spinneret? GOOD

      OP here.
Look, i personally prefer MJ as Iron Spider.
But if they want to fully separate MJ from depending on the spider motif because of Peter, I understand why she’s not Spinneret or Iron Spider.
Just give me MJ in tight red outfit.

        Anonymous

I like Iron Spider as well.

However, they can't remove the spider's motif from MJ because of her connection with Spider-Man. Her character is simply too rooted in it.

It's like in the Venom's movies. I mean, sure, Venom out of Spider-Man's shadow can work, but there will always be the feeling something is missing here. In this case, it's represented by Venom missing his white spider's logo.

Hey, the supporting cast of all superheroes end up in this kind of messes. Especially the love interests who needs a way to skip the old "damsel in distress" role:

      - Lois Lane as Superwoman.
      - Betty Ross as Red She-Hulk.
      - Jane Foster as Thor.
      - Pepper Potts as Rescue.

      You get the idea.

Do you remember the first Timeless' issue? Back in 2020. There was a picture of a red haired woman in a Spider-Man outfit and a female Black Panther with white hair.

That event could still happen, if they cure Ben of his Chasm's condition.

After all, the whole thing of Punisher leading the Hand took 4 or 5 years to happen. (I think).

Haha, yes. Total Spider-Man supporting cast destruction.
When's Aunt May getting powers? JJJ? How about super-Robbie ongoing? Oooh, what about we bring in the cancer kid from Stern's run and retcon him Deadpool's sidekick? Wouldn't put something moronic past modern writers.
Fricking ridiculous shit. Feels like nobody involved with making Spider-Man comics understands the appeal of Spider-Man in the first place.

Unlike those characters, MJ is in the prime of her life.
She has what it takes to be a superheroine..

In the comics when JJJ was mayor of New York they gave him spider powers for some reason. So at one point he got randomly attacked and beat his attackers by shooting web at them. Spider-Man then called him Spider-Stache.

I'm fairly sure this was related to something in the plot.

I like the idea of MJ with powers and thought it should have happened when the original Jackpot came out as a way to get her the frick out of Spider-Man and actually commit to making BND work
But I don't like her with theses powers and this original and that costume, it's not timeless or iconic.
If MJ was just a mutant with good luck powers the reverse of Black Cat it would be perfect, you could explain how she survived her plain crash and general she gets into, it could add a wrinkle to the relationship with her father, or how it affects her carrer in Hollywood. The bracelet built by her alternate reality boyfriend is fricking stupid, it'll never stand the test of time. The only good I see in this book is it gives new artists practical experience drawing a bunch of super hero stuff in NYC with one main character.

MJ and Black Cat being opposites does add an interesting dynamic and create some conflict.

      Review for jackpot is here
"While reading Jackpot I kept thinking of the line from Mean Girls, “Stop trying to make fetch happen.” Mary Jane is now a superhero, sure, but does it work? And also, who wants this superhero entirely based on one line of dialogue she said once? That dialogue is incredibly famous, of course, but it also required some convoluted backstory to get those powers into her grasp. Regardless, Marvel is publishing the one-shot Jackpot #1 this week to tie into the “Gang War” event. Is it good?

Jackpot #1 is fairly mediocre for a superhero comic. It’s not bad, but it also doesn’t do anything all that impressively. It drops us into a fight between Jackpot and Francine Frye, aka Electro. It’s your standard “you’re probably wondering how I got here” start. We then cut to MJ and her new boyfriend, Paul, who is going through grief counseling due to their losing their adopted kids, who were never real at all. It never probes their relationship too deeply and instead simply reminds us of their dynamic.

"Part of the problem with this comic is it never dares to evolve or probe anything too deeply. The “Gang War” event is more of a background element, for instance, and the reason Mary Jane must suit up as Jackpot. The usual tropes of heroes saving the day not because they want to but because they must are relayed, and there’s more than one bad guy to beat down.

Jackpot’s powers are also vague and confusing. If you were a casual fan who didn’t know a thing about Jackpot, you’d assume her power is tech-based without any chance involved, which is what made her powers compelling in the first place. When she does use her powers, they sort of just work, sometimes in confusing ways. At one point, I think she uses vines to help slow down Armadillo, but that’s just a guess. There’s another moment where MJ should plummet to her death, but she somehow grabs onto a rail. Given she’s using her very non-superhero body to do this, you’d think she’d react in a way any of us would if falling to our deaths, but it’s treated like no big deal.

Joey Vazquez draws the superhero fights well, although the stakes and danger are always low. If you know Electro, you know she’s not a murderer, and it’s unclear what Electro is up to. They fight, Paul and MJ craft a plan that doesn’t work, and then they fight some more. However, Vazquez draws an excellent Spider-Man who pops into the story briefly.

"Jackpot is a very basic superhero yarn. There’s fighting and, primarily, a reminder Jackpot exists. The lack of character work or any real ramifications of the events in this story mattering makes this a relatively easy book to skip while we wait for Jackpot to have any relevance at all"

      https://aiptcomics.com/2024/01/17/jackpot-1-review/

I guess that's what happens when the powers are confusing; a story with no stakes since the reader doesn't know when the heroine is in danger.

It'll be a good theme episode for later Spider-Man adaptations, where their iteration of MJ will get powers for one episode or arc, learn what it's "really" like to be Spider-Man, and that will solve some emotional development with her and that adaptation's version of Peter.
