Why hasn't O'Brien received a field commission yet? He was Maxwell's tactical officer and chief of operations on DS9 yet he's still an enlisted man?

In early TNG he was a lieutenant but the writers kind of forgot about his rank. I bet there'll be a novel or comic where the fate of the Temporal Cold War rests on Gary Seven working behind the scenes to ensure Miles improbably remains enlisted or some shit

Yet he ends up teaching at the Academy, even though he tells Worf to lay off disciplining his dumbass engineers since they haven't gone to it.

Just watched this today, O'Brien being a featured character just comes out of nowhere.
Like the episode before this one we're introduced to Kamino for the first time and they're getting married and now O'Brien is saving the day. Prior to these two eps he was just a recurring extra.

was it a setup for moving his character to ds9

I would guess they were just impressed with Colm Meaney's performance in "Data's Day" and then decided he should get to star in an episode.

i remember him an his dumb wife hijacking plots all the time, like the one where keiko gets possessed by a space criminal and takes everyone hostage

I don't think you can call it a hijacking when that was the literal plot of the episode. Also they apparently really liked that one because they recycled it for DS9, even though evil Keiko is unironically nicer than regular Keiko.

Agreed. Evil Keiko would have sucked O'Brien off every morning where as normal Keiko thought oral was a disgusting relic of the 21st century.

maybe keiko is just really susceptable to being possessed, like ray from ghostbusters

    Picard:
    >Maxwell was right. Those ships were not carrying scientific equipment, were they? A research station within arm's reach of three Federation sectors? Cargo ships running with high-energy subspace fields that jam sensors?

    Gul Macet:
    >If you believe the transport ship was carrying weapons, Captain... why didn't you board it, as Maxwell requested?

    Picard:
    >I was here to protect the peace - a peace that I firmly believe is in the interests of both our peoples. If I had attempted to board that ship, I'm quite certain that you and I would not be having this pleasant conversation - and that ships on both sides would now be arming for war.

    Gul Macet:
    >Captain, I assure you...

    Picard:
    >Take this message to your leaders, Gul Macet:

    Gul Macet:
    >.....

    Picard:
    >We'll be watching.

The writers wanted a character who could be a stand-in for the blue collar working man. O'Brien was already a character and they liked Colm Meaney, so they broke continuity to work him into that spot.

This is my favorite TNG episode. Most homosexuals will say something like Inner Light or Chain of Command, but this one truly shows the cruelty of politics in a very soft, strategic way. Watching this defined me as a man.
