I'm playing the first KH for the first time and something that boggles my mind is why did they picked Alice to be one of the main 6 princesses instead of Mulan or Pocahontas when she has never been advertised as a disney princess? She wasn't even in Wreck-it Ralph 2.

they dropped the ball with atlantica in both games. they probably spent too much dev time on the swimming mechanics to realistically cut it, so they made it not too relevant to the plot (you can even skip it in both games). They should have just done the movie in the first game then have riku snatch her after she gets legs.

The first Kingdom Hearts was released in 2002 which would mean it was in development before that. The "Disney Princess" categorization was not created until 2000, so they were being developed concurrently and in different countries because Kingdom Hearts is Japanese. They would have had no idea that they were supposed to be prioritizing "princesses" in any arbitrarily defined grouping rather than just picking assorted Disney characters.

I don't play them religiously, but I had to play 1.5 and 2.5 a couple years ago through emulation because I never did post-game hype shit on Critical. That was fun. Beat Sephiroth for the first time. Got Ultima keyblade for the first time. I still have a 2.5 save I piddle with because I've never defeated all the Org members. 2.5 holds up I would say.
3 is fun for a first playthrough, as a fan. I don't know if non-fans could get into 3. I wouldn't know. But I do know 3 was at least enjoyable because I needed that shit to release.

It's not about being an actual princess, it's about having a heart so pure it cannot he corrupted by Darkness. It's why Kairi's there despite being in the same boat as Alice, and why later actual princess don't count. They have baggage that allows them to be more susceptible to Darkness.
