He's an insufferable c**t, is he just tapping into the "I'm actually a genius but society doesn't appreciate guys like us" angle for the midwit audience of this show?

He's attractive so he can treat everyone like shit and still end with the girl and the promotion. It was a pretty blackpilled show.

It seems you identified with the office sperg, so his character upsets you. Most normies watch the show and self-insert as Jim.

You’re supposed to self-insert as Ryan, in fact. As S1E1 is his first day

They spell it out midway through the show's run when we get an episode where Jim is hiding from a former friend he disowned after Jim got placed in a bullshit "gifted" class, that now owned his own business while Jim was a lowly drone.

Jim was a pampered prince piece of shit spoiled brat who's mom filled his head with delusions that he was "special" and all so super smart when he was growing up, all because his teacher once told her that Jim was "smart" and put him in some arbitrary "gifted" class in elementary school that she and Jim mistook for meaning he was a genius and was going to go do great things when he grew up.

But Jim wasn't a genius; he was a super generic himbo that was blessed with a handsome face but even that only got him so far in life. He's stuck working in an office gig as a lowly salesman instead of his dream gig as a sports talk personality or some sports-adjacent dream job where he gets to hang out with athletes as part of their "boys" entourage, basking in their reflective glory as the man behind the jock that runs their business affairs or talking about them all day and getting paid to do it.

He's a failson who hates Dwight because Dwight accepts his lot in life and who obsesses over Pam because she's a shithead just like him who thinks she's owed a better life than she has even though the show also throws shade on her by explicitly stating that she was the real cancer in her relationship with Roy and that Roy was only an butthole because of the fact that when we met the couple at the start of the series, Pam had already infected Roy with her toxic behavior to make him "acceptable husband" material and turned him into a piece of shit.

There's an entire episode dedicated to showing how much Pam's ex grew after she left him. Literally a happy millionaire with a hot wife who learned piano just for the wedding. The show depicted the toxicity and cowardliness inherent to people who get stuck in these jobs and it was very brutal about it but masked it with humor and sappy moments. The later seasons forget about this dynamic and devolve into "we're a family :)" slop

I agree with you and I don't understand why people would watch a show about such bad, shitty people.
I have watched some of the office, but I was young and even then I felt something was off and not nice at all, so I dropped it.
If I want to see subtly shitty people I just live a life, like I do already, or maybe just watch into the mirror.

Jim and Pam are the worst part of the show until Michael leaves at which point the show is completely unwatchable.

I hated every character on the show except Andy in the early seasons. It becomes bad around season 6, then falls off a cliff once Michael leaves. The Jim/Pam drama in the later seasons is unfathomably awful

Michael was a better person than Jim and should have been the one who got to date Karen. Pam should have been on her back at a Red Roof Inn servicing tricks, as she was a hooker.

He's a mediocre boring guy who just happens to be the only mildly sociable/inoffensive person in an office setting filled with obese slobs, b***hy women, belligerent geriatrics, and mentally unstable autists. He's a big fish in a small pond. He took advantage of his status and decided to crown himself as the alpha male of the office despite being a beta. He gets exposed as a beta male in the one episode where the black guy enters the scene and steals his spot on the office hierarchy.

I loved the scenes where they actually were working and talking about the business, I think that was much more interesting than Jim being cucked by Roy nonstop and Dwight shenanigans

He's just a bad actor. American TV actors always play a version of themselves, they can't help it. You can tell his character was supposed to be more like Tim from the british version, especially since the series were almost 1to1 in the first seaon. But instead you got this homosexual actor self inserting into his own character and ruining the part (and much of the show also) by trying to play off getting repeatedly cucked and mogged like he's a temporarily embarrassed aloof aloof chad instead of the bitter spiteful loser he was intended to be.
