They both fricking suck. The fact that the inbred irish kid got an oscar nomination without delivering one line that sounds natural astounds me.

He must have licked so much israelite ass over the last year.

It's pretty gay but it isn't romanticising them, you're supposed to be disgusted by the gay stuff

Movie has a lot of different themes. But ultimately doesn't really go in depth on any of them. Which is why as a story this film falls short. There's some funny scenes in it, usually involving the parents. And i would say one memorable shocking scène ( and i am not easily shocked) with Oliver.

of course it HAS themes. every story HAS themes. doing anything of value with them is what makes good art good. and it's what makes this movie shit.

I meant themes more as in the film starts out as a classic boy goes to school, doesnt have any friends but the autismo guy. Finally gets an in with the cool guys, drops autismo guy. The movie never follows up on that. Relationship between Oliver and rich kid established. So we go to the Salt burn estate. Nothing happens between them anymore. Its really just about the rich guys fricked up family. Until out of the blue, the director decided to make it into a revenge plot for the poor. Talented mr ripley is introduced. it's like 4 different films in one but all of those films really do a much better job at it than this one.

          > The movie never follows up on that.
Michael calls him a bootlicker at the library but that’s about it. Would have been an interesting twist if Michael was a charity case of Felix’s in the past. It seems like he chose someone each year he felt sorry for so he could feel like a good person, before getting bored and dropping them for a new one.

Its the order in which they were cast for the movie. Barry received a role first then so on.

used to know someone who worked in the production side of film. not in the US but they said its all the same (mostly) worldwide. There are some exceptions, but thats really it. tends to be in the contracts of bigger name actors that they show up first, or at least appear the biggest.
