Suicide Squad also came out while capeshit was mega-popular and had one of the biggest marketing campaigns of the 2010s, while Gunn's came out during the pandemic and had so little marketing that a lot of people probably still don't know it was a thing.
The Suicide Squad had tons of marketing. People just didn't care about it. The attending audiences gave it a B+ CinemaScore.
The Covid and day-and-date HBO Max strategy also weren't the only reason why the movie bombed. WB also released Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984, Godzilla versus Kong, A Quiet Place 2, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and several other movies at the time both at theaters and their streaming device simultaneously and none of them bombed as hard as TSS.

Yeah. People always credit Gunn for Dawn of the Dead and that unironically was what gave him an in with the MCU, but by all accounts very little of his script was used. There's an interview where Snyder makes fun of an elaborate sequence Gunn wrote involving dogs that was too complex and goofy for them to do.
