The biggest weakness of the concept is that this character is somehow still disabled despite all of Spider-Man's powers. That's just not possible, the super strength alone would nullify most of the disease.

I just don't get why someone would want to imagine themselves still being stuck in a wheelchair if they were Spider-Man.

        Anonymous

It's the same as people who make disabled characters in Dungeons and Dragons, gaining access to a magic wheelchair that makes you straight up better than a normal person but if someone rolls a 20 while attacking it 3 times it breaks, which is super unlikely.

Huh? Wish I knew about this item before, my character is just straight up (or I guess, sitting) on a normal wheelchair

Why not make a wizard that floats on Tenser's Disc? Or cast spider climb and walk on ceilings using your hands?
Or having someone cast a spell that cures you of your ailment?
Making a character who is disabled who sees their injury or defect as a defining character trait is stupid, anyone who has the ability to improve such a terrible situation should do everything to fix it.

          >A possibility I'm sure runs through the minds of people who do try experimental robotic surgery to regain the use of limbs.

If the guy proposing is a known super villain ? Probably yeah. People that have a life-long disability usually aren't particularly desperate of seeing it cured, because they are used to it. They wouldn't jeopardize their own safety for it, or risk being indebted to someone that could make their life measurably worse.

            Anonymous

Is Ock a known super villain here? It seems kind of odd to have one in a high school prom when we wouldn't even let other types of criminals near a school with kids.

Lot of ways you could go with it, like why doesn't she have a 3rd party review the tech and do the surgery? I can't think of many people who would brush off being able to see or walk again w/o a really good reason for others.

these girls have done literally everything right with their position of relative power and sun spider is b***hing about it. it's like the writer was afraid to make them actually sincerely ignorant instead of cheerleader props.

She literally cant use her legs Anon. She probably cant wallcrawl as fast because she has to support her entire body with her arms rather than legs. Like you can call me an butthole all you want but the power is silly as frick on a crippled person when you could have done something like idk flight? has there ever been a crippled flyer? My point is the powers spider-man has are based around physical prowess and putting that physical prowess on somebody who can only use half their body can only work for like webswinging. Like, that's why the robo legs wheelchair works for me because it allows her to cope with her disability.

None of those characters are defined by their disability, in fact they overcome adversity despite having it. Sun Spider exists just to draw attention to the fact that she's a special snowflake, this character only works if you take the absurd leap of logic that her villains and contemporaries don't take her seriously and thus try not to hurt her during fights.

I'm not saying she can't, I'm saying the powerset is a weird combination for her disability. Like being a tech expert doesnt require you to use legs or being a psychic. Spider-Man spends most of his time leaping from roof top to roof top and walking upside down on roofs. Like idk, you could probably pick a better power for a character that compliments them. Feels like giving laser eyes to a blind guy. She cant really use her abilities to her fullest potential.

How is it any weirder than being blind and having radar sense?

              Anonymous

Because having radar sense allows Matt to negate his disability, being a tech expert allows Barbra to practically be on the field with the Batfamily without ever leaving his wheelchair. Xaiver can read people's minds or astral project or fricking psychic blast motherfrickers or levitate himself so he doesnt need legs. Sun-Spider still cant bounce or kick like Spidey. She can web swing and hit hard but like have you seen Spider-Man? Dude is constantly using his legs as a ballast for his acrobatic feats or summersaulting around. Idk if there are crippled gymnasts or acrobats but like i doubt they can compete with like a gymnast with use of their legs.

Anonymous

Anon, I was more saying she'd still have mobility problems despite the web swinging. It would still make being a superhero incredibly hard when like the whole point of being a spidey type is power fantasy brought down to reality. Like it is fine to have drawbacks to your powers but this just feels like somebody wanted a Spidey with Ehlers Danlos system without actually like sitting down and thinking about what that would mean. Like the whole point of Spidey was he was a more realistic take at the time on superheroes. So like do her friends wonder how she managed to roll up in a place without a wheelchair access and get sus? Does she try leg braces made of adamantium with starktech servos to walk or are they too expensive and she needs a job at the bugle to get them? Do fellow supers look down on her for being crippled? Does she enjoy having to speak/be an example for all crippled people any time the media puts her in the spotlight? Does she struggle to keep up with more abled villains? Like there is a dozen questions to make her feel more fleshed out but she kinda hangs out with some grrrrls at prom and tells incel doc ock to frick off because she thinks he is mega creep.

If I can redraw the entire comic with Spider-Gwen or Spider-Girl and just have them standing around rather than in a wheelchair it isnt really about a disabled Spidey Anon. It is a Spidey story with a character who is disabled. There isnt any like ramifications for Sun-Spider, no part of the story actually requires a disabled character to tell. I could literally make the entire comic and just have any Spidey girl in place of Sun-Spider and it would just be mid comic with a really boring Doc Ock who's an incel rather than an insufferable genius mad scientist. Name one single part of the story where Sun-Spider couldnt have been anybody else. All I've got is Ock trying to promise prosthetics which more or less could be replaced with any generic sleazy promise to offend a girl.

Wut? Just cuz I say it was a bad combo doesnt mean I dont want it ever. As I said, I liked the robo legs because it was creative. I just think the issue is if youre gonna do a spidey story at least acknowledge the issues of being a superhero because Spider-Man is defined by his struggles against his adversities and triumphing over them. It would be more compelling if the comic focused on like that in those ten pages than whatever the frick going to prom wuz.

But it does play a role in the story, you dumb frick. There’s a clear overall message about common spaces needing ramp access because of how dangerous/impossible it makes moving for wheelchair bound people, hence why ramp access comes up TWICE in the story, and Otto is literally trying to buy love by telling Sun Spider he’ll fix her legs.

tbh Oracle was depressed about being wheelchair bound and longed to be batgirl again even if she was useful as a tech expert. And Xaiver is a psychic, not really a power that requires use of your legs or moving around all that much. Very different from being Spider-Man who is a very physical active and very acrobatic man who loves kicking and flipping around. It's more being crippled is kinda a silly choice for a spider-man powerset but the robot wheelchair is cool and i wanna bang her in her costume so i dont really care too bad.

Could have gone the assassin spider route where due to her disability she develops insane control over her spider-sense and more fine tuned control of the wall crawling ability.

Only an extremely narcissitic fat woman or a deeply distrubed incel with a fetish for disabled girls would come up with a character like this. I say this as a guy who used to drive the short bus, nobody with bad legs was happy about having bad legs. Disabled people don't want to be in wheel chairs. They don't fantasize about being in wheel chairs. What kind of a psycho uses fantasy to remind crippled people of the shit they're trying to escape in the real world? If a kid has divorced parents, the last thing they want to read about is their favorite couple breaking up.

I do find it hilarious that in her universe people are apparently too stupid to put two and two together that every time the spider girl with gimp legs, crutches, and a wheelchair shows up that one disabled girl who's always around mysteriously disappears though.
