While Kaufman's imagery works somewhat with the theme, the book's reveal has more impact and the ending isn't moronic.
I actually liked the movie more. I feel like the book tried too hard to raise the horror atmosphere and make it seem like it was a slasher. The coat hanger suicide was kind of gay, and pretending there was a brother was kind of pointless except for the purpose of misleading the audience. The film on a rewatch shows from the very beginning what it's about, where the book only starts to show it in the second half
I will say though, I do think Kaufman got a bit too up his ass with the endless film and theater references, those could definitely be cut down.
God, I love Kaufman's movies. Every single one is existential meta loner kino, but in a good way. And Kaufman himself doesn't seem to have a very organized creative process either, and just sort of runs with whatever comes to mind in that moment. I liked the dreamlike cinematography a lot, reminded me of ESOTSM, it did hit close to home and in fact I was left thinking about it for days after, which is something rarely experienced with a movie. The liminal scenes were Lynch done right, the ending and the surreal scenes were Lynch done wrong.
On the incel / loneliness issue I'd say the worst is during youth, past a certain age I'd assume one wouldn't care anymore or have found a way to dela with it.
An alternative take is the story is from the POV of the young guy, imagining getting old and completely alone, so it could be seen as a cautionary tale.
