He was maybe, as a first time offender, facing trespassing and some misdemeanor for the knife he had on him if that state's knife laws are pozzed. Getting roughed up, deloused, and a shave/haircut is no reason to believe it's flee, go down for hard time, or get beaten to death. That's the whole reason they made him have the PTSD flashback episode. To make his irrational breakout somewhat sympathetic as not entirely within his control as oppose to being seen as the complete frick up he would be if he went "Hey, you can't hit me. The Sherriff is a c**t but he didn't really do anything wrong. It was Galt that set Rambo off. If it wasn't for Galt, John probably would have just sat in the holding cell for a day and been booted out of town.
Honestly the best thing the Sherriff could have done was grab Rambo some lunch, cost him maybe $3 back then, and drove him to the edge of the county and not been a prick about it. He'd have never seen the guy again.
Or really just keep an eye on him. The Sheriff wasn't gonna have anything to do, he even says it's a quiet town and that's how they like it. Just leave the guy alone until he actually starts something. But Sheriff had the power, so there was no reason to wait if he could flex on Rambo.
