There's two very radically different concepts that both get called self inserting
One is directly placing yourself in a work, be it in fanart or an Italian writing a story about him journeying into the afterlife and meeting his idols who fawn over his virtues and laughing at the people he didn't like stuck in Hell. This can be cringe but also a little admirable for the sheer gall
The other is mentally associating with an existing fictional character and this is cringe without exception
