She has no power there, so why should she get or take the blame for this car crash of a movie?

You could ask that from Brie, cause she is so outspoken and difficult to work with. But not from the youngest cast member in that corporate nightmare of disney.

This rather reminds me of when Halle Berry received an academy award and a Razzie in the same year. Another actor who cares just wasted on a poor project

    > The 2004 film Catwoman received multiple dishonors at the 25th Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actress and Worst Screenplay. Halle Berry accepted her award for Worst Actress at the ceremony in person. Holding her Academy Award for her performance in Monster's Ball in one hand and her Golden Raspberry Award trophy in the other, Berry said to the audience at the ceremony, "Thank you so much. I never in my life thought I would be up here." She parodied her performance when she accepted her Academy Award, and thanked the film's director and her manager, "He loves me so much that he convinces me to do projects even when he knows that it is shit."

I'll act as devil's simp for a moment

Iman Vellani's a fervent actress, playing a character she enjoys to portray, wasted on a mediocre movie. She's not a writer, director, or editor so she can't be blamed for anything else in regards to production besides all that she was hired to do. she did the best with what she was given, which by the way was one of the most positively received aspects of the movie.

    >Peter Travers of ABC News commended that "If there is such a thing as chemistry, Larson, Parris and Vellani have it." Vellani in particular received praise, with Amelia Emberwing of IGN declaring that she "predictably steals the show". Helen O'Hara of Empire praised the humor and emotional depth of Vellani's Kamala with the "two older heroes".

The the leads in the Marvels did the best with the material they were given, and when the dust settled just about everyone, even cynical anti-woke Hollywood haters agreed the Vellani was okay. Larson and what'sherfrick starred in the same movie and delivered boring, stale performances no one enjoyed under the same director with the same script. That's not Vellani's fault.

The only issue I have with the statement is that Iger's only fault is just not completely sacking the film for being a complete and utter mess. It was probably one of the last ones he had signed off into development before handing off his position which also meant the film's development cycle was almost entirely under Chapek

Iger wouldn't be passing praise onto Chapek if the film was a success, so he doesn't get to pass the blame.

From what I can tell, this film was probably the only one that was made almost entirely under Chapek's control in both development, pre-production and filming. Also Chapek did something that completely and utterly fricked their metrics and test audiences which they didn't realize until Ant-Man 3. This movie was kind of fricked because their only options is to tweak the ending and ship it or scrap it entirely

He certainly was responsible for hiring the director, writer and production crew and then giving them a year to figure out how to make the whole thing. Even if we ignore the need to watch two streaming shows, the movie was doomed because it was underbaked through all stages of its development

But isn't it Feige who hires the director, writer and crew?

I'm willing to believe Chapek is worse than Iger, though to my way of seeing it Iger is just better at hiding how terrible he is (and as even Chapek's biggest critics agree, it was Iger's idea to pump out MCU content for Disney+, which is the root of many of their problems right now). But this is still a fairly typical Feige production, just a completely half-assed version of it.

Feige definitely has blame as well, but again, Iger shares as much if not more blame than Chapek.

              Pre-Production was in 2021
              Filming started in 2021
Iger didn't leave Disney till the end of 2021
CNBC even pointed out that Iger was still taking charge of film/tv while Chapek was CEO, during COVID:

              https://www.cnbc.com/2023/09/06/disney-succession-mess-iger-chapek.html

              >His succession plan allowed him to stay on as executive chairman for 22 more months. Chapek would report to him and the board. Iger would also “direct the company’s creative endeavors” — nebulous phrasing suggesting he would retain control of movie and TV content and operations.

You'd be wrong, because the filming started July 2021. Iger didn't fully leave Disney till the end of 2021, so he shares the blame with Chapek.

Probably the best way to respond to it all things considered.

            >Franchise's fanbase is predominantly male
            >Most of the female viewerbase were women who went to see movies with their husbands/boyfriends/whatever
            >'Women kept it alive when it was dormant!'
If a franchise is dormant, wouldn't the people most discussing it be fans of the franchise, which in this case would be overwhelmingly male?
            >But heaven forbid you watch a single movie with a woman in the lead role
By this point there were multiple Marvel movies and Star Wars movies with a female in the lead role. This movie flopped. Where's all the women, all the non-white women, going out in droves to support their own?

I kinda get what she's saying. OG Star Trek and Gundam had HUGE amounts of female fans and they legitimately put in some leg work to save those shows. But, that's certainly not every fanbase. Girls can be some big fans of things. Hell, my grandma was a big sci-fi nerd and is responsible for introducing me to a lotta stuff. But, I dunno. Those shows I mentioned also had things that tend to appeal to a lotta female fans in more meaningful ways than "she twerks lol."

Women and female fans relate to romance and love drama. That is what they spend all their time talking about, and all the most popular female media like twilight and 50 shades of grey focuses on it. Sailor moon is basically the ideal female super hero comic and fantasy.

Yeah. And there's like no romance in Marvels and the drama is really basic stuff. It's easy to see why some soap opera stuff like Star Trek has a bigger female fanbase than people would think.

movieblob didn't say bomb, he said underperform. Ant Man 3 definitely underperformed. As did Black Widow, Eternals and Shang Chi.
That's not to say Marvel wasn't still releasing hits post-Endgame like Spider-Man, GotG3 and Strange making one billy or just shy of it, but the Marvel brand was clearly weakening.
Bob makes it sound like this was just a fluke that was statistically bound to happen eventually, but the writing was on the wall to anyone who wasn't a brainless shill that a Marvel bomb was close to happening.

What Disney needs to realize is that Endgame reset everything so they're now back in the "phase 1" period where they have smaller number of actual hits and everything else is weaker because they still need to rebuild everything back up. They've done a shitty job rebuilding because they think the brand has enough inertia that they can fart out whatever and fans will still eat it up.

    >Nooooooo it's not my fault you guys ;-;
That's literally correct tho. Anthony Hopkins compared his job to clowning. She had a job that entailed playing a specific role in a transparent attempt to prop up another character, she did it adequately in my judgement, she collected a paycheck and unlike certain other actors she didn't try to grandstand or turn it into a big social issue.

Clowning is a good term. Carol and Monica kinda had nothing going for their characters for either actress to work with properly, and the obvious cuts to the movie didn't help there either. It also didn't help any of the somewhat serious stuff they tried with Kamala, but she also had ample opportunity to do some physical acting and generally just do wild shit that neither of the other leads could actually do in character.

That's the kind of short-sighted attitude young people have toward work. "Who cares if this company fails, it's not my company, I get paid either way." Which is great until you get downsized because they lost so much money that they have to scale back. And it's not just going to affect her, it's going to affect everyone who worked on it. These are people who have families and can't really afford to lose their job. The least you could do is try everything in your power to give the best performance and then promote the shit out of the movie and actually give a frick.
Reality is though that she's a high school graduate who passed on college to be a Marvel superhero, and not even one of the high paid ones. Life after Hollywood isn't looking good for her.
