They kind of already do, but because in order to do so they have to actually show Miles on panel, Cinemaphile thinks that means they're jerking the character off instead.

They could have just let him operate in San Francisco or something. Not every spiderman has to be in New york. They could have let Ben Reilly grow old, get married, and have a kid, something that Peter will never be allowed to do. What if Ben Reily's send-off was just to emphasize just how stuck peter is in his self-perpetuated cycle.

Remember Ben Reilly, Peter's clone from that story in the 70s, and the Clone Saga that took up two whole years of the 90s? He's back, and now he's a villain called Chasm because the editor of Spider-Man says there's not room for another spider-powered hero in the world and they don't know what else to do with him

People tend to undersell it, they mindwiped Ben, made him obsessed with Peter and dipped him into "psycho reactive goo". Yes, all this stupid shit was caused by Nick Lowe just realizing Venom doesn't exist anymore.

Sooo... Was Janine Maddy all along and Ben stans fell for it cuz petey likes gingers so the clone must love them too?

          Anonymous

No, Janine was an existing character Ben met during his exile in Lost Years. In Beyond she acted as a suspiciously efficient plot device, but at the time it wasn't clear if that was by design or just another piece of terrible writing. JMD's mini introduced a way out of this mess, but Wells and Lowe are so malicious I'm not sure they'll follow up on it.

Venom not being a villain was a mistake.

Yes. Agreed a million percent. Ben being revived should’ve just been forgotten (like Kaine). That editor isn’t wrong there are entirely too many spider-people. And the most worthless one is Silk. She serves zero purpose and her becoming a villain for Peter would have been a much better arc than Ben. Story wise and real world wise she really was the better option for spider-man beyond and chasm.

          Anonymous

The way I understand it, most people when they say they want Ben back what they really mean is that they miss the old Bronze Age characterization of Spider-Man where Peter Parker had a more proper mixture of his old abrasive "Jokes and refuses to take shit from the world" attitude along with the maturity to humble himself when he fricked up before manning up and getting the job done. Same for Miles, too. What little I've seen of Miles Morales himself is that he's kind of a mishmash of different ideas by this point, since he's still without a real rogue's gallery or big motivation beyond vaguely helping people and keeping his family from the numerous apocalypses and disasters that happen to every spider. Most of the people that I see like him seem to also enjoy how similar he is to the early characterization of Ultimate Peter Parker as a nerdy but earnest teenage hero that is struggling to find his place both in his social life and as a new protector of the people.

So really, getting aggrieved over people's preferences is kind of a waste of concern since most people who are fans of them don't even like them for being who they are to begin with.

Look, if the writers don't trust Miles to have enough personality to quip on his own evil clone, then I don't think he's quite ready for a proper rogue's gallery

Ben is a character that came out of one of the worst Spider-Man comics of all time
Miles starred in one of the greatest animated films of all time and was a follow up to one of the most critically acclaimed Spider-Man runs of all time

      Anonymous

Maybe eventually, but if it happens it'd be more the result of just how miles is inserted in everything while ben only ever appeared in TAS.

Ben also starred in popular/critically aclaimed stories like asm 400 or lost years, which is far more than what Miles has had.

Usm wasnt particularly crtiically aclaimed. It was a popular book, sure, but so was the clone saga while it was running.

Really the big difference is media exposure, miles was put into a lot of stuff more or less right after his creation. Which does make him more comparable to say venom or carnage who had that exact same thing.

They really fricked up by not giving that suit to Miles.

Maybe Chasm should become a villain for Miles instead. Have Chasm working hard to turn Miles from Peter and convince him that Peter's allies only ever suffer because of him. But continuously show Ben/Chasm has a soft spot for him like a brother.

Then somehow the "Chasm Powers" get transferred from Ben to Miles, Ben runs away critically injured to the West Coast, and leaves Miles infected.

Miles now can have his own "Venom" type story like Pete's black suit era.

The suit does look very prowler esque, and Miles as prowler is a kino idea. Fits with him bieng a legacy character, but trying to reedem one with complicated history.

They really could just pull a "venom" and say the infection is making him all angsty, and he doesn't turn villain or anything but just spends some time on his own being Prowler and doing cool shit without Peter.

Then after a while Peter finds a way to cure Miles, and he convinces him to be a Spider-Man again for some big Spider-Family event. But maybe merge the costume ideas of his classic and his chasm looks.

      >Chasm decides no one should be a Spider-Person anymore

      >wants Peter to take sole responsibility for the title and give up having the "Spider-Family" and essentially make him choose between being Spider-Man and doing it alone, or living a quiet life with MJ.

      >Peter is unaware of this plot and believes Ben to be dead

      >Miles is the only one Ben shows himself too and otherwise leaves no trace of himself. He tries to be the "devil on his shoulder" and pulling psychological shenanigans on him, and making Miles seems crazy to the rest of the family and like he's causing destruction.

      >Ben uses his smarts to concoct a serum or device or something that will strip the powers from the spider-family

      >Uses Miles to lure them all to where the stuff is

      >SpiderFight ensues, big fight between Peter and Ben. Ben uses trap card on Peter, and team, all according to keikaku, so Peter can watch him achieve his victory.

      >Miles somehow gets free and throws Ben into whatever machinery which strips the Chasm Powers away from him and also leaves him fricked up

      >The resulting explosion sends the Chasm nasty shit into Miles, infecting him and nearly killing him as well.

The thing with Ben that miles doesnt have is that while both have very similar personalities to Peter, Ben actually has different life experiences. You can never have a story where Peter contemplates suicide as is a grifter trought the US, but you can do that with Ben. While Miles really doesnt. What miles does have different is never focused on (like him coming from a well off family and not having to struggle for money), or already similar to Ult Peter (like having a confidant from high school).

Then again, i do think that Ben should have stayed dead in the clone saga. It was a really good death.

It also doesnt help that miles's main gimmick, being the spider-man motivated by Peter's death and having to live up to him, isnt really applicable now.

      1. Miles doesn't have a similar personality to Peter, Peter is by far quippier.
      2. Miles has living family beyond a single elderly aunt; he's still got his mother, father, uncle, and a baby sister. How is that not going to result in a different life experience?
      3. Miles isn't particularly well off, you're basing the fact on the fact that he won a school lottery. He's solidly middle class at absolute best.

        1. That's one difference, outside of that he is basically written the same way ultimate peter was (which isnt the exact same as 616 peter to be fair). And in turn ben was far quippier and less angsty (despite the suicide attempt) than peter was at the time.
        2. And so far its barely affected it, because the first run killed his mom quickly into it as well as his uncle. So far its really not led to much difference.
        3. No, i am saying he's well off in relative terms to peter, because he doesnt have to work because both of his parents do that and they can afford to live without bills piling on constantly.

I dont think miles is a bad character mind you, i just think that outside of his origin and itsv he's really not done much. He's just kinda bland normally.

They could lean into him being far more social than peter like itsv and the game did, but at this point it'd be 11 years into him existing as a character. Hell you could use him, ben and peter to tell wideley different stories so everyone gets the spider-man they want or something like that.

So Peter had a story where he was kidnapped and tortured for weeks until his dad and uncle rescued him? Or a story where he fights sewer monsters while baby sitting his infant sister?
I would very much like to read those.

            >Does peter have a story where he's tortured for weeks untill a loved one helps him.
I mean depending on how you see it that's last hunt, just with the help being external rather than internal, which isnt particularly more compelling. But sure you do have a bit of a point.

And sure the baby sister is different from peter. Mayday did that first. So again, you have the issue of Miles cribbing from pre-existing spider-people but you move who it affects. Kinda like saying, yes Miles having an evil family member is diffrent from peter, but both ben and Miguel had that as well.

And fundamentally Miles stories tend to give more focus to the elements he has in common with peter, or at least with how peter is seen, rather than what he has different. Which is a shame, because you could explore them and make him more compelling.

It doesnt help that despite being a fairly new character (11 years old), his history is a bit too convoluted with the whole moving universe thing, because writers dont make up their mind whether he remebers ultimate stuff or not, and what's even his current motivator.

Now to be clear I don't think Miles is being written well. I think they're trying to do too much and too fast and as a result nothing is being given time to focus or breathe.
I think any time his story is about to go somewhere they stick him into another event, be it Civil War 3 or the universes merging or this multiverse nonsense because Marvel wants to show off their new toy any chance they get without realizing that doing so cheapens it. I don't think that's the fault of the character or the concept, but rather the execution.
Or, for example, I think Starling was a good idea to give Miles his own Black Cat but then they speed through her character arc so that she's another expendable D-list teenage superhero and that's kind of huge waste.
But I'm not quite willing to write him off entirely because of this.

Oh, no sure i can agree with that. I more so mean that Miles really hasnt done that yet in the comics, so its weird when people act like its happened. Whenever he has the possibility to really come into his own either events happen or he's put back in the box because he cant change too much from formula. I think ITSV shows that Miles can work without even that much work.

                >Civil War 3
                Dont fricking jinx it.

Miles should just frick off back to the Ultimate universe or, if he must stay in 616, another city. What in the everloving frick is the point of keeping him in NYC? When Peter is still around? He'd have much less criticism if he was truly the only Spider-man around in a non-616 setting.

Spider-Gwen should be shit and raped though. Frick that useless character.

Miles getting to be the main spider-man of a setting would help, moving him to 616 was a huge mistake and removed the biggest thing he had as a character.

                War 3
                >Dont fricking jinx it.
                It technically already happened
We had Civil War, then Ultimate Civil War, which derailed Miles' arc in that universe, then 616 Civil War 2, which may as well be Civil War 3, which Miles and Kamala got dragged into as well. Then the aborted Children's War started in Ms Marvel which was supposed to be about teenage superheroes and would've derailed Miles (and Kamala) AGAIN.
People love to scream that diversity characters are the problem but the truth is it's the constant crossover events that torpedo their ability to gain the sort of foundational stories that white superheroes were allowed before everything had to be crossover bullshit.

I mean a book called civil war 3, but you're not wrong.

I think legacy characters are perfectly fine, altough in general marvel lends itself less to them than DC since they're so soap opera ish at their core.

It's Ben Reily. They made him evil for the final story he'd be appearing in because Marvel thought it would be a good send off for him.
The reason Marvel think Ben needs to leave is because Spider shit is too bloated and he had to go.
