In all honesty, I don't know a character that has a bigger drop off from popularity. From comics, to movies to games. She somehow has failed in every aspect of media. I even see people avoid buying milk with her face on it. Why does Marvel keep her in shit? She clearly doesn't sell, just kill her off and replace her with anyone atp. Hell, Kamala Khan could be a better CM at this point.

I unironically (though how can I prove it) think she's a good character, it's just that she stops being a good character whenever someone decides that she is going to be Marvel's greatest female star, which keeps happening without bothering to wait for the audience to agree.

The fact that Wanda became their most popular female character completely organically, and it was a total surprise to the MCU that had already chosen to discard her to set up Young Avengers, sums up everything that's wrong with their approach to female characters. It was decreed we would love Carol and Kamala and want to see them both leading Avengers teams, and nobody bothered to wait and see if we actually loved them.

This is close to my notes. Another thing that Marvel can't stop doing to Carol is that they love to dump characters on her. Her supporting cast is made up of D-listers who can't sell a book on their own and whatever new character the writer created to be Carol's BFF.

          https://www.comicbookrevolution.com/october-2023-single-issue-comic-book-sales-rankings/

          >Captain Marvel #1 completely flopped right out of the gate with an embarrassing debut failing to even make it in the Top 50 as it came in at the number 58 spot. Yes, this issue did ship in the last week of October. However, this issue was also bolstered by an eye-watering ELEVEN variant covers!

          >Nobody other than a Marvel editor is surprised by Captain Marvel #1 bombing in its debut. Carol Danvers remains far more popular with Marvel editors than she has ever been with the consumer as Captain Marvel does not sell well. Add to that the fact that Alyssa Wong is the writer and Wong has never had any sales success on a mainstream superhero comic book. This title was doomed from the start. Maybe Captain Marvel will enjoy a nice rebound next month and turn into a strong seller. Grab your popcorn and we shall see how this title performs over the next several months.

          >It does not get any better for Carol as we look at the other Captain Marvel titles that were published in October 2023. Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest #4 fell from the number 139 spot to the number 152 spot. I predicted that this five-issue mini-series was going to finish outside of the Top 150. That seems certain at this point.

          >Captain Marvel: Assault On Eden #1 had a hideous debut barely even making the Top 200 by coming in at the number 185 spot. This one-shot special issue was designed to promote the upcoming MCU movie The Marvels. This is no surprise. I do not know anyone excited for The Marvels so I am not shocked that a comic book related to The Marvels tanked in the sales rankings.

Like much of what this man has to say, it's disingenuous and playing semantics that they weren't trying to turn her into an exact copy of Wonder Woman, though they absolutely were trying to force her into a similar archetype role, and have her occupy a similar position in the hierarchy of Marvel heroes as Wonder Woman does in DC as their top heroine.

      >it's just that she stops being a good character whenever someone decides that she is going to be Marvel's greatest female star, which keeps happening without bothering to wait for the audience to agree.
This is a big part of Carol's problem, but it's far from just being a Carol problem. Nobody wants to wait for the audience to decide which characters are the popular ones, or ask them which characters they want to see get pushed, the creatives have already decided what's "meant to be popular", and they're not going to change direction or admit they were wrong.

Even the fans are guilty of it to an extent with live action adaptations of comics, we know which characters are popular in comics, so there's a mentality that wider audiences are obviously going to have the exact same likes and dislikes, which leads to nerds losing their minds when normies end up liking Guardians of the Galaxy more than X-Men or Aquaman more than Superman.

      >The fact that Wanda became their most popular female character completely organically, and it was a total surprise to the MCU that had already chosen to discard her to set up Young Avengers, sums up everything that's wrong with their approach to female characters.
You can tell they still have no idea the magnitude of this colossal mistake because nobody's been fired for it yet. Nobody's been fired for The Marvels flopping either, and they really need someone to fall on their sword for that.

      >The fact that Wanda became their most popular female character completely organically
I always summed it up to Elizabeth Olsen, not because they wanted to do the character justice.

Sometimes casting the right person is everything, and they really lucked out there, especially considering she wasn't even their first choice. But she wasn't "supposed" to get popular, so they never had any plans beyond just destroying her "because it happens in the comics". It's probably already too late to fix this, the moment has been lost.

Feige and Disney's woke writers at the newly bought Marvel comics, destroyed Carol Danvers' soul, ruined her body and then removed her breasts, ass and everything that made her feminine and athletic, then only called the worst artists those who would never draw her sexy and to close the coffin, only the worst and woke writers worked and helped to sink a good job done for more than 40 years, it was wonderful to see the response of women in comics, tv and movies they hated it

As far as MCU Carol goes specifically I think she's ridiculously mishandled because she seems almost specifically designed to be as remote or unrelatable as possible.
She spends her appearances largely in deep space or with amnesia and disconnected both physically and emotionally to the larger MCU. Even Star Lord had "I'm from earth and my mom had cancer" to ground him for the audience.
Carol on the other hand has the Eternals issue of all those MCU problems like Loki and Ultron and Thanos happened she was just conveniently away and staying out of it but we're suppose to root for her anyway because she's so stunning and brave and perfect.

You know, its funny. The producers for the Captain Marvel movie stated that Carol Danvers is way too similar to Hal Jordan, so they sought to make the movie the opposite of Green Lantern 2011. So while Hal's movie bombed, his [Geoff Johns] run is still strong. Carol is the opposite; movie was a hit, but for the last near decade has had no event, villains or memorable cast.

They'd let "star writers" do too much damage to it before the MCU was ever a thing, anon. Much of what you attribute to malice was accomplished through incompetence and pandering to the most insane parts of the fandom.

            >Now that the MCU is dying they want to try to walk that back.

Let's be honest, as much as Stormgays celebrate that win, the Marvel vs DC vote was X-Men fandom vs Wonder Woman fandom, it would have worked out the same way whichever member of the team they put against her.

But as popular as Rogue, Storm and Jean were in the 90s, they haven't sustained that popularity, and Disney aren't going to push them in solo movies because none of them have any history of solo success. There's this weird narrative that the MCU's ability to push female characters suffered because Fox had all Marvel's best heroines, but every heroine Fox had was known for being part of an ensemble team cast, none of them were solo stars.
