Half the jokes don’t land, goes on too long, that musical theme is repeated like 20 times, the black character making the weepy face and piously quitting show biz NOT because he had to wear actual blackface but because he had to use shoe polish for the camera exposure, the duke’s song going on too long, Brad Pitt’s character unbelievably committing suicide rather than dying of alcoholism like the real life inspiration, the lead beaner being a mid actor at best, and many many more. The epic shots were good and I kind of liked Margot’s arc though, to be fair.
The black guy was just the only one to not sell out. He had natural talent and didn’t flaunt it out of the gate. Was discovered and then when it came to a point of compromising his values, he did it once and left along with one of his firsts gifts. It could have been cringe heavy handed politic moment if his character was one note, but he isn’t.
also the score is fun, and amazing in a great theatre. Gives the films a heartbeat when resetting the mode.
He just rose up after playing at the party and just kept being applauded for his natural talent. He was told to put on the makeup so he could look as dark as the other musicians that were not in main light and he found it offensive because it was over how it couldn’t be a mixed band, which was a studio concern because they started taking all these rich prudes money(because everyone sold out) and he only decided to play just so his band mates would get paid, but then immediately quit and threw away to the keys to the car the studio gave him.
It’s a really strong character movie.
I loved it.
Most jokes were meant to be cringe.
It was mostly visually pleasing although gross.
Some parts were bad like the end act and the mopey characters. Overall "epicness" and vibe was cool.
The scene where Margot redid eight takes on set was hilarious and I rewatched that scene several times. I don't laugh much in movies (I laugh inside my head) but that scene was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. My type of humor I guess.
I love how outlandish it is. I enjoy black comedies that are actually a bit mental, not just corny drunk fratboy jokes where they think offending your mom and dad is "dark humor." This movie was insane, crazy, fun. It's unique and I haven't seen something like that in a while.
i followed production of this movie for almost 2 years
15 minutes and i turned it off
biggest piece of shit i watched since nightmare alley remake
and thats why i only watch old movies for the last 5 years
That is absurd, Babylon is a good if not great movie. Surely you can watch a 3-hour movie without turning it off or looking at your phone? The Nightmare Alley remake wasn't as good as the original, but it was still better than most stuff that gets released these days.
this i turned it off when brad pitt arives to the party (and is his frickin house and he's supposed to be John Gilbert yeah right lets say that these dead people were as degenerate as modern queers on a dead end gay club) and that b***h from dr. house screams at him and leave and that was enough i cant tolerate this "le angry woman" trend, frick women if you're not going to act like a lady get out or i kick your sry ass.
Couldn’t get into it. The humor, the pacing, the introduction to characters. It all seemed oddly stilted and excessively broad in a way that felt like a parody of a genuine effort. I go see a similar attention to the era in something like The Aviator, and the scale and period introduction is deftly handled in little time at all. Whereas this has the whole push into the story proper in some strange frequency that grates and tests patience in an overtly obnoxious way.
I got yelled at told to die by this old woman and her peg leg friend because I told them to be quiet when the movie started. That kind of made me endeared to the film, especially when they left because I upset them.
Reading Murnau's biography I can appreciate the scenes at the silent movie set where everyone is screaming and lots of shit is going on.
I overall enjoyed it even if it felt a little overlong and the final montage was honestly a bit cringe (I feel like it should have been the movies this film directly aped from). Glad I was one of the 59 people nationwide that saw it in theaters.
Yeh it was great seeing it in theaters and enjoying it from the start, it's been comfy watching a fanbase develop over it. Did you see that thank you message for going to the theaters that Margo and the Mexican guy recorded?
Just like you wouldn't like reading my diary, I don't like holywood movies jerking off to holywood's past. Same reason I didn't like Once Upon a time in Holywood and found The Artist mid at best.

What was going on with him? Why did they make him put black stuff on his face?

Three hours of degenerates being degenerate.

The whole Tobey Maguire underworld scene could of been cut from the movie.
>Tobey Maguire underworld scene
I have never wanted to watch a movie more than right now.
He looks like a straight-up villain in it too
the whole movie is a big fat elephant shit. pretty much tells it to you in the opening.
