>Why did this show never become as popular as Pokemon? I thought it was much better.
Because they kept changing the cast every season. American fans liked the originals but they kept changing it.
They kept changing everything. The digiworld has no set rules, appearance or anything really. Every season is wildly different.
Another thing is that the evolutions make no sense and are a complete mess that nobody could remember. Having some cool designs dont mean much when they are not coherent. Furthermore, there are a lot of shit/sily designs as well and every digimon name ending with -mon is more childish than pokemon.
Also the whole concept of Pokemon is way more appealing to kids. Pokemon has a distinct magical world with it's own set rules where young kids can legally go on adventures and catch all sorts of creatures and become celebrities. Pokemon are actually a part of the world itself.
In digimon, the worlds are entirely separate - there's the boring real world and the digiworld where kids temporarily travel to but at the end of the day return back to the real one. It has no consistant form or rules and overall is kind of boring.
Tamers is still worth watching, probably the only series from these Japanese -Mon franchises worth looking at as an adult; it's geared towards kids, but the narrative and themes in Tamers touch on ideas of digital companions in a way that I think will only appear more and more insightful and prescient as AI companions become more popular.
Main reason is that it was designed for boys only, so they lost that insane networking effect Pokemon had for 50% of kids.
But they also had non-episodic format and they rotated the cast every season, and with the exception of the Tamer season, it was all downhill from Season 1.
The games are unironically better than Pokemon now, and the show is still way better when you can watch it in order.
to be fair he said the games are better than pokemon NOW
I would say that Cyber-Sleuth and Survive are better than any post-3DS pokemon game.
obviously early pokemon games were much better
girls never gave a shit about pokemon and never will, which is why it pissed me off so much in the later games when they kept removing stuff and adding stupid fricking fashion contests and shit instead to try to chase that market
What do you mean?
Digimon was extremely popular and co-existed with Pokemon.
It was constantly discussed at school.
I think it started to fall off around season 3 because they restarted with a new story and at the time FoxKids fell off.
02 was shit. And then they kept trying to reinvent the wheel, pokemon tonka long time before introducing mega evolutions for example while with Digimon you already have a weird card game hybrid in the 3rd season and the 4 is more like Kamen Rider.
>That one episode that HEAVILY ships TK and Kari, followed by Kari getting transported to some dark world and it's NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN
I should have known at that point that 02 was garbage, but I kept holding out hope. It started off so well too.
>Kari Kamiya is also pulled into the Dark Ocean due to holding too much inside her. She comes across Scubamon bound by Dark Spirals and frees them once rescued by Takeru "T.K." Takaishi, Patamon, and Gatomon. They only reveal their true forms as dark sea creatures who wish to mate with her so that they can produce powerful offspring to fight the new god (In the English Dub, the creatures want her to become their new Queen who lead them in the battle against the Dark Ocean's ruler).
hot
>shipped TK and Kari
Um anon, you really dont know? You actually are unaware in 2016+8?
Oh right, I forgot this is Cinemaphile and not an anime board.
By the way, this isnt just autistic speculation, it is confirmed via interviews with the producers.
>jesus fricking christ, that score.
The original OST is ultra kino and very comfy, specially the ones with harmonica. You are just a pleb with no taste.
Let me guess, you also hate the DBZ OST and prefer the generic royalty free "rock" from the dub?
Out of character? For being frustrated the girl he likes wont stop thinking about another guy? And then realising she is quite litteraly in love with her brother?

Yeah, TK is a beta cuck who didn't got the girl in the end.
>That one episode that HEAVILY ships TK and Kari, followed by Kari getting transported to some dark world and it's NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN

i think it's just a combination of Pokémon having been first, Digimon not really having many good games (especially at the time), and each Season of the anime following a different cast with different partner Digimon and telling a new story. i blame the lack of video games on Bandai and their obsession with selling plastic toys, gunpla, and V-Pets over producing great video games though. they're like the Games Workshop of Japan.
also, just for the record, i like the rotating protagonists and new stories from Season to Season. it makes the setting feel vast and alive in a way that Pokémon has never accomplished with me. the world of Pokémon is weird because they discover a whole new continent with 150 new Pokémon on it every 3 years. can you imagine if we discovered a whole new continent tomorrow with 150 new species of animal living there? there'd be a lotta questions. lmao
The weird thing is that only happened once in hindsight. Only for johto did they say “whoopsie, new mons exist such wow”
Later on it became “oh hey these are only in that region but we knew about them”
all i'm saying is, if i were a girl, i'd wanna marry Wargreymon or Flamedramon. maybe i'm an outlier. there are some very, very handsome male Digimon. lol
The dub was shit
So was Pokemon's but Pokemon was not a story focused anime
The virtual pets weren't continuously ran in the US like they were in Japan so they were mostly a fad
The style of the games was inconsistent
No immediate game tie in and the games that were eventually released were complicated and shit compared to Pokemon Red/Blue.
Pokemon was elegantly simple escapist fantasy with clear universalist goals which in a cheery and upbeat world and setting that even the dumbest moron could project themselves into with a (for the time) well designed series of games released alongside a simple and well done anime that had an easy to follow plot.
Digimon never stood a chance of becoming popular. It was typical animeslop with no staying power that lacked the insanely good art and fights of Dragon Ball Z or Inuyasha or Sailor Moon or Card.Captor Sakura, which were far more popular among 90s kids.
As a kid I hated that everyone compared Digimon to Pokemon when the only things they had in common were monsters and kid protagonists. The games AND shows couldn’t be more different
Watch Digimon NOW and you'll get kinda creeped out knowing what you didn't know then.
It's almost like Digimon was telling us a cautionary tale about the future regarding obsession and creating your own mons.
I think the dub did a bad job of telling the story so kids found it confusing
This isn't a problem with Pokemon because the story is just "Ask Ketchum fights pokemon and wins", you could skip from the first to the last episode of a given season and still make sense of it. But Digimon was a lot more complicated.
Many reasons:
Could never shake off the allegations it's just a pokemon ripoff.
Was always paying catch up with pokemon
Didn't have insane marketing behind it
The designs were too complicated for merch, so it suffered in quality and authenticity, even official merch look like bootlegs.
Atrocious dub and animation quality I don't think this played a huge factor but still...
Even after the "Mon" mania died, pokemon still push through with the games and anime, while Digimon went dormant after frontiers for years. And even when it came back was always inconsistent with huge periods of inactivity.
Despite all that, I think the franchise still did incredibly well. Adventures and Tamers are still highly regarded and the subs holds up way better than pokemon.
You're right. Season 1 was comfy, but 02 was fricking garbage. But even season 1 of Digimon can never compete with season 1 of Pokemon, which had me glued to my TV screen as a kid.
Early Pokemon has a lot of heart, all of Ash's Pokemon have a personality and backstory. People cream their pants that Digimon was more mature because it dealt with death but so did Pokemon but in a pg way, like the Charmander episode, as a kid you understand that the lil guy could die. It becomes low effort after a point but the first 100-150 episodes are great+the movie.
I completely agree with you. The Kanto saga and even the Orange Islands saga are kino. The first film is kino too. I lost interest by the time the Johto saga came around though, because the Pokemon anime had become too rigidly formulaic.
>Orange Islands
I recently bought that to rewatch and nearly all my favorite episodes I remember where from this season. I really like it. The original Indigo League season was fantastic too though, just felt like Orange Ialands is overlooked. And some of the early movies were pretty good too.
[...]
There's a whole giant block about this on the Fox Kids and 4Kids wikipedia blocks.
There were rights battles and networks being dicks to stick it to laws forcing them to show education TV by either out right not airing blocks or putting them at strange timeslots so they failed
I remember when ABC affiliates did the same with their blocks. Showing Saturday morning shows at noon.
Power Rangers got this treatment and it ruined their ratings.
So that is why it seemed like it disappeared out of the blue? I thought I was just missing the shows because I forgot the time they came on. Dang, that explains a lot.

The third movie had no right being that good, the Lucario movie was pretty good too, it made the regis actually seem like a threat
digimon was more mature because it had real world issues in it. Pokemon is this utopian fantasy where 10 year olds get to travel the world in an mostly perfect society. Digimon you've got kids that argue and in their world have to navigate a real transit system and scrounge up enough money for food. Not to mention issues of divorce, adoption, illness, forgiveness and so on. They're both kids shows, but pokemon feels like it's for ages 4 and up, but digimon aims for that 10+ crowd.
I completely agree with you. The Kanto saga and even the Orange Islands saga are kino. The first film is kino too. I lost interest by the time the Johto saga came around though, because the Pokemon anime had become too rigidly formulaic.
If they had ditch Team Rocket and Ash actually capture and properly trained his pokemon, with would have been a timeless classic. But that homosexual kept releasing good pokemon, using baby pokemon forever and not catching anything when he had the chance. What a b***h. Gary should have been the protagonist.
And when they got in Johto it was 50 episodes of lost in the forest in between Gyms... unwatchable.
>Gary should have been the protagonist.
No, because then exactly the same thing would have happened to Gary because the Pokemon anime was created ONLY to be an advertisement for the games and that was its biggest flaw. What should have happened was Ash winning the Kanto League and then a timeskip involving Ash marrying Misty and having kids with her. And then the anime should have ended.

Beautiful picture, they lost a lot when they moved to digital.
>What should have happened was Ash winning the Kanto League and then a timeskip involving Ash marrying Misty and having kids with her. And then the anime should have ended.
What could have been, eh?
Saban owning most of digimon in america. Saban's quite famously is a pretty frugal guy and after his cheapskate attempt to fudge multiple Digimon OVA's into a "feature film" failed at the box compared to Pokemon's purpose built movie he started cutting his losses.
By the time Tamers was airing in the west, every medium of digimon had different continuity than when it started, the games, the cards, the comics, none of it worked in tandem with one another, even mascot characters weren't kept consistent. So eventually they cut their losses and stopped bothering to compete directly.
Fox handled their animation department horribly. Titan AE also bombed that year and effectively ended fox's animated films. Mean while Rugrats 2 made more money than Titan AE and Digimon combined. How? Bad budgets and horrible marketing. Though the digimon movie profited cause it was so cheap, but it really made far too little for what it could have been.
It's easy to look back and think how dumb that was but Angela Anaconda was Fox Family's most popular show in 2000 so it wasn't that weird to promote it.
The fact this shit was tagged on to the movie pissed everyone off.
I did not know a single kid who like Angela Anaconda
It's easy to look back and think how dumb that was but Angela Anaconda was Fox Family's most popular show in 2000 so it wasn't that weird to promote it.
What about that kid whose parents divorced because of it?
The fact this shit was tagged on to the movie pissed everyone off.
I did not know a single kid who like Angela Anaconda
The most bewildering part is the fact that the writers for Angela Anaconda clearly had no idea what Digimon was actually about. It's as if Fox just threw them the designs of some of the human characters, and told them "that's Digimon, now make something for the film".
moronic designs and names. Also Pokemon has a very simple but well defined concept, you catch creatures, train them and fight other creatures and you are incentivized to catch them all. Digimon had no such thing, it’s just not as relatable as Pokemon.
Because Digimon was cringe and came out after pokemon and so it looked like a lame ripoff
>all the digimons names ended in "mon" which was cringe >the evolution tree made no sense and most of the designs were awful >plot was hard to follow and didn't make sense for kids; their main demographic >the cringe song that came on whenever a Digimon digi-evolved
because you dont collect digimon plus you're sent to a strange world with weird monsters trying to kill you. Pokemon atleast felt comfy. Even the most violet Pokémon can be tamed and become friendly. The friendliest digimon turns into a dinosaur with guns.
As a few already said, it didn't have the consistency and this is especially even more true for the games. Pokemon from Blue to Gold is the same game but more while Digimon World 1 and 2 are entirely different from each other and thus couldn't cement their identity.
It was way more complex and serious as well. Some episodes were very philosophical and would make me cry. I remember their parents dying being a big plot point when Myotismon was invading or something. But overal the show was more complex and deep. The games weren't as fun as well.
Terrible localization and marketing, mostly. Also a timing issue of coming out during Pokemania, so it was seen as a cheap knockoff. Targeting the wrong audience as well, I liked Adventure as a 6 year old and all but couldn't appreciate yet just how good it was (or Tamers a couple of years later for that matter)
>never become as popular as Pokemon?
i watched digimon as a kid as it was airing and it even to a kid it was clear it was far superior to stuff like pokemon. the story had stakes, the characters were more complex (from an 8yo perspective.)
and that's the reason it failed to become a top tier franchise- you can't up the stakes and develop your characters for 20 seasons without cheap gimmicks. so once the original story was done - that was it, even hardcore fans lost interest quickly since everything after season 1 was clearly just watering everything down.
I maintain it's always been the lack of decent games
Pokemon was a multimedia success, but they all fed into each other: Kids watched the show and wanted to buy the games, Kids who played the games watched the show to see what the Pokemon actually looked like, they'd play the card game with their friends, they'd buy the merch, etc. There was more to market than just a TV show and everything worked in tandem to keep interest going with their audience. By contrast, Digimon had the show, and their digi pets, but they did not consistently put out games, and the games they did make were often weird, harder to get into than Pokemon (Which was wisely designed as baby's first JRPG), and the gameplay systems varied wildly between entries, meaning that even if you liked one game, there was no guarantee you'd like the others. The games just weren't that popular enough to stick with kids, and when that one pillar starts to crumble, everything else follows
I recall picking up Digimon World, getting excited to evolve my Agumon into a Greymon, and forgetting to scold him for shitting on the grass once so instead he turns into some middle-aged ball dude with a porn stache. Really put me off; I understand now that they were trying to emulate the mechanics of the VPets, but that's not what most kids who are buying an actual video game are looking for - it doesn't work as well when you have a JRPG storyline you're trying to get through at the same time.
As someone who preferred Digimon, it comes down to accessibility for the most part. The Pokémon games, when both franchises were fresh, were much easier and less esoteric to understand. Pokémon's marketing, particularly in the west, was much better too. An example; when I was a kid, one of the first websites I went on after getting internet was the Pokemon website - on the website was a full, comprehensive and easy to use Pokedex; even though I *preferred* Digimon and didn't play Pokemon, having access to this meant that I knew all the Pokemon at the time and could still have conversations about it with my friends. By comparison, there was little online - and nothing official! - that I could use to research the various kinds of Digimon at the time. It also doesn't help that Pokemon's evolution trees are very simple and straightforward, for the most part - usually just straight lines iterating more powerful forms of a theme - while Digimon's evolution trees outside of the cartoons are weird, webbed with crossover, and often have little sense of continuity. I have Agumon's wikimon page open right now; there's around 50(!) potential evolutions for him - I stopped counting at 20, and that's less than half the list. Really intimidating for a child.
bandai did not know what to do with digimon so the anime died when frontier spent 8 episodes on the heroes getting their ass kicked filler, just like endless eight killed haruhi.
Exactly. Whenever you refer to a file 99% of the time you aren't going to say it's filetype.
"Send me the quarterly memo"
Not
"Send me the quarterly memo.pdf"
I know the file type is hidden these days, but if you send the wrong one to the state/company they will complain and ask for the right file type, even if they could convert it themselves. Not like you can post any kind of image format on Cinemaphile either.
My guess is that it was because of a continuous storyline.
My daughter (8) just started with pokemon and with the worst of all things. It's called pokemon journey and it's even more autistic than the original series. There is literally no plot, every episode is contained in itself.
I introduced her to the original Digimon and she was interested at first but after 6 episodes she started to get disinterested as she realized that there is a plot that you need to follow and that there are things referenced from 3 or 4 episodes ago.
Kids these days have absolutely no attention span, no matter how you bring them up, no matter how you educate them, no matter how good you are as a role model, kindergarten and school will inevitably ruin them.
>Kids these days have absolutely no attention span, no matter how you bring them up, no matter how you educate them,
Sounds like a (You) problem, "dad"
FYI, mugendramon actually survived being cut in half, it became millenniumon in the ryo games, among other things its responsible for ken turning evil.
I liked watching the show but it went a year without any new episodes and the last season never even aired in the US. The dub is decent but half the show is Scott McNeil.
The games mechanic of using different disks in the console to spawn a new monster blew my little nuts through my skull. I'm still amazed no one really figured out how to maximize that kind of mechanic to sell a fricking ton of otherwise useless cds.
Yeah a bunch.
The tri movies are a mess, many people hete it, but I like it.
Last Evolution Kizuna was a greate ending for the Adventure saga.
Now there is the new 02 movie, I didn't watch it yet but it looks kino.
It was pretty bad, the others got sidelined brutally, pointless fusion transformation at the end and limp attempt at trying to be sad with the ending but not wanting to commit so the epilogue is still canon and they reunite with their mons anyway.
Don’t even bother with Tri
Kizuna tries way to hard to make you feel sad turning Digimon into growing up/imaginary friend parallels. Doesn’t even make sense when the 02 ending is still canon.
New 02 movie doesn’t have that nonsense but it’s priorities are out of wack. It introduces a Monkey’s Paw digimon story which would be ok if it wasn’t all there really was to the movie. It’s like if Hurricane Touchdown didn’t have any of the comfy road-trip scenes or Wendigomon encounters. The 02 cast are actually pretty cool as adults but don’t really get a chance to do much. Grown up Yolei and Kari are pure sex at least.

Every magical girl anime does the same thing.
But there is an extremely egregious shot in one Tamers episode where right after the sequence you posted, the other kid morphs into Justimon and his "sword" expands hugely in the least subtle innuendo ever.
That's some cool shit. I liked the beetle guy in Digimon 4 but he never did anything interesting. I hate how Digimon always focus on two dudes and don't give a shit about anyone else.

the one where the protagonist stops that Gundam sized blade from impaling ShineGreymon with one fist is fricking insane. how godlike. it's a shame his character design is kinda meh.
this happened after the first season where i lived, i only got to see a couple episodes of the four masters or whatever it was called
Even 11am was pushing it for Saturday cartoons. Anything that came on after 12 might as well not have even existed. They're called Saturday MORNING cartoons you dumb boomer executives.
For years I wondered why they did this and learned about the disputes between companies and government entities. Disney never wanted Power Rangers and other stuff. They all came in the Fox Family package they purchased and so they just threw it a bone hoping to make some money out of it.
They also sabotaged their affiliates, their affiliates also did shit.
It's just a very fricked up story that robbed kids of their enjoyment of shows by putting them on at strange times to get back at other people.
Has Disney just been run by incompetent morons for its whole existence and its just now catching up to to them? That's what it's starting to look like. They're coasting on reputation alone and even that is doing poorly.
Disney was fricked when they decided to close their 2D animation studio. When they decided to exclusively focus on tween girls was also a sign.
They cancelled project and everything back then.
Digimon season 2 is such a mixed bag.
How you go from the kino that is the Digimon Kaiser and then follow it up with the fricking vampire being the big bad all over again complete with digimon team rocket is baffling.
They fired the original showrunner in the middle of the show, and then the new guy wanted to do something completely different.
The lore hasn't recovered from this since.
The staff change really did a number on it. They could never decide on a primary focus for the series after Kaiser. World Tour is a fun arc with all the international destined though.
One of those series where I like the ideas but the execution just didn’t work. Also I wish Armors weren’t abandoned at the halfway point. Fusions were cool but really bottlenecked the digimon to the point Imperidramon was the only relevant one after awhile. Wish everyone could have gotten a Magnamon equivalent. Magna is the GOAT Veemon evolution.
What pissed me of the most is that they didn't pair TK and Kari together in the fusion thing. >both part of the original digidestined >Angemon and Angewomon both part of the same lore >Literally 2 sides of the same coin >we could get a cool Angel fusion >their are paired with the lamest characters with nothing in common, with no lore behind it.
MADE NO SENSE
>Angewomon
Exclusive property of LadyDevi for fusions now.
I like the DNA’s we got it just sucks that they didn’t get to hit mega like Imperial.
Iori is bland but I’ve grown to appreciate Miyako’s energy and abrasiveness, It paired well with Hawkman being a gentlemen. Loved Mimi for similar reasons.
Also that shot of her on the beach in the movie awoke so many things in me. No wonder Ken smashed.

Problem was Gatomon was the champion. And also some how simutanelously a rookie cause it went from gatomon to Nephrititimon. So they took a bird and fused it with a cat to make a not angel. Then took an angel and an anklyosaurus and made a weird effigy.
Ultimately I wish the 4 new champions got their own ultimate forms too. The DNA ones should have been placeholders just like the armor forms. Also still way made Wormon never got their armor form from the egg of kindness or whatever. Lots of weird missed stuff, probably just to sell toys. Bandai basically ran season 2.
Season 2 is not just a mixed bag, its an atrocity. Its all over the place and doesnt develop anything. It has maybe 3-4 decent episodes. Rubbish compared to season 1.
The reason it failed me was that god-damned bait and switch movie where we wanted a story about this, but only got twenty minutes so they could move on to some garbage about a fat wing-eared digimon with a literally who trainer. That was the end for me. I was so excited for the movie and it turned out to be an explanation that the show you love is now cancelled, now sit here and make do with this new sack of shit we're shoving down your throat for no reason.
Same thing happened to Yu-Gi-Oh a few years later. What's with fricking Japs changing the cast of a hit show every two years and being surprised nobody wants to fricking watch it anymore?
also, anyone remember this one weird ep in which Izzy (sp?) was floating in space/vacuum trying to meditate/do thought exercises and meanwhile we had flashbacks to some family drama?
We need a show about cool transforming monsters without the damn kids. Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, Monster Rancher, Beyblade... there's always kids controling the creatures.
Just remove humans and let the monsters be the characters. Has this been done?
Digimon season 1 is a masterpiece, unironically. Still watchable, while its of course aimed at children it has the qualities of a fascinating often surreal fairytale that speak even to an adult watcher.
Also this theme kicks even more ass than the evolution theme:
i like how people are pretending pokemon games were good, let alone better. laziest made games in the fricking universe and their own fans have been rebelling since the gameboy advanced era. look at pokemon the last 10 years, fricking absolutely disgusting excuses for games. they could never make something liek the digimon world games.
Personally i think all pre-3D pokemon games are pretty good. X/Y ruined the series though and anything ive played after was trash.
Only played Digimon World and World 2003, liked both a lot, but old pokemon games are just as nice, even if much less daring.
Once GameFreak went to the 3DS they dropped in quality fast. The other Pokemon games not made by GameFreak were pretty good though.
I haven't played a Pokemon game since Sun/Moon due to it letting me down. The story was fine but the game felt so lazy and short compared to past ones. The X/Y game before it didn't even like a complete game.
Sorry, Digibros.
Monster Rancher had more and better fanservice at the time. Better characters in general. Better story too. Unfortunately everything else was pretty shit.
NTA but sadly people don't remember that Smash Mouth was popular before Shrek. They like to pretend Smash Mouth was bad and le epic meme music that spawned from that movie. And it's not just zoomers it's people who lived through this shit but have such shit memories and are so easily swayed they buy into it.
Anyone else recall being a kid when tamers came out and getting extremely put off by the 'it was just a show in this series' thing? Took me years to get around to watching it... and while I ended up loving it when I did, dumb kid me certainly had my nose put out of sorts.
One of those memories that reminds me that sometimes kids are paying attention.
Digimon had a habit of shooting itself in the foot with its core themes. From the show within a show making things not feel like they matter to them pushing the ideology that when you grow up you have to let go of your friends including your Digimon which is 100% NOT the kind of message you want to give kids you want to buy your merchandise.
i just remember one season had a magical girl transformation sequence and that was when i first knew i was destined to be a loser perpetually horny for cartoons.
Just intersct rather than saying bump moron. Bumping is for when nobody has replied to a request, not when you are trying to hold conversation.

I remember being 8 or 9 and liking Mummymon a lot for some reason. That's usually how I behave when I like a girl, I sometimes wonder if little me knew at that time I would become a Mummymon-esque pushover
someone worked out a fix for it a while ago but it's not something you could ever find on your own, it's like standing on one random map pixel in a special way
>digimon >maybe play with a 10 dollar overglorified phone game >by phone game i mean for feature phones, like a cell phone from 1990 >except without the usefulness of a phone
>pokemon >buy a game boy >play a legitimate game that involves strategy and time sinking, becomes a semi legitimate e sport >costs 50 bucks and 10 for a link cable but lets you play with other people
it's all down to market cap. Pokemon played the buisness game, the original IP maker even blamed israelites for keeping it going so long because goyim can't do shit without us
also digimon? no israelites, no israeliteromon, no urseryomon, nothing.
Only had 1 good season, the first one, tamers is overrated and was alienating and boring to kids. Couldnt decide whether it wanted to be Pokemon or something serious. Shitty games. The actual surprise is, that digimon is still around and loved
>says "world" funny
>Dejitaru Warudo
KINO!
i really felt that
Why did this show never become as popular as Pokemon? I thought it was much better.
>Why did this show never become as popular as Pokemon? I thought it was much better.
Because they kept changing the cast every season. American fans liked the originals but they kept changing it.
As a kid I thought the cast changing was cool
It has no consistant form or rules and overall is kind of boring.
this. I only liked the original cast and stopped watching after it was changed
Tamers is kino and worth watching howthoughever
too late now, I'm a grown man
Tamers is still worth watching, probably the only series from these Japanese -Mon franchises worth looking at as an adult; it's geared towards kids, but the narrative and themes in Tamers touch on ideas of digital companions in a way that I think will only appear more and more insightful and prescient as AI companions become more popular.
Main reason is that it was designed for boys only, so they lost that insane networking effect Pokemon had for 50% of kids.
But they also had non-episodic format and they rotated the cast every season, and with the exception of the Tamer season, it was all downhill from Season 1.
The games are unironically better than Pokemon now, and the show is still way better when you can watch it in order.
>the games are better than pokemon
LMAO. LOL.
to be fair he said the games are better than pokemon NOW
I would say that Cyber-Sleuth and Survive are better than any post-3DS pokemon game.
obviously early pokemon games were much better
>Survive are better than any post-3DS pokemon game.
As boring and easy as Survive may be, it actually works.
girls never cared about the games or the cards or the show are you crazy
The nineties weren't interested in your non binary pan sexual cult games you moronic zoomer. The male audience was the only one that mattered.
girls never gave a shit about pokemon and never will, which is why it pissed me off so much in the later games when they kept removing stuff and adding stupid fricking fashion contests and shit instead to try to chase that market
What do you mean?
Digimon was extremely popular and co-existed with Pokemon.
It was constantly discussed at school.
I think it started to fall off around season 3 because they restarted with a new story and at the time FoxKids fell off.
The overarching story, while better than Pokemon's, made it difficult to just jump in and enjoy.
It literally had the worst theme song of any show in the history of the world.
>It literally had the worst theme song of any show in the history of the world.
>t. burger who never listen to the original Butterfly
8 kids was really too large of a cast.
There were 8 crests though.
>My personality trait is... light
As stupid today as when it was written
There shouldn't have been 8 crests.
>.t american
the card game was harder to play and the games sucked
02 was shit. And then they kept trying to reinvent the wheel, pokemon tonka long time before introducing mega evolutions for example while with Digimon you already have a weird card game hybrid in the 3rd season and the 4 is more like Kamen Rider.
>That one episode that HEAVILY ships TK and Kari, followed by Kari getting transported to some dark world and it's NEVER MENTIONED AGAIN
I should have known at that point that 02 was garbage, but I kept holding out hope. It started off so well too.
02 infamously changed directors midway.
That dark world episode was fricking bizarre, like a fever dream, essentially a creepypasta episode that was actually real and not just a myth
Because the series changed directors and dumped most of the planned plotlines.
?t=54
I always thought Kari was a very boring character that didn't need to exist.
jesus fricking christ, that score.. imagine having to watch this as a kid
>jesus fricking christ, that score.
The original OST is ultra kino and very comfy, specially the ones with harmonica. You are just a pleb with no taste.
Let me guess, you also hate the DBZ OST and prefer the generic royalty free "rock" from the dub?
Extremely out of character for TK in both the sub and dub.
Out of character? For being frustrated the girl he likes wont stop thinking about another guy? And then realising she is quite litteraly in love with her brother?
Yeah, TK is a beta cuck who didn't got the girl in the end.
02 Tried to be Eva when people were still lovespelled by Eva before realizing it was a mess.
But the dark ocean actually does play a bit of a role and is mentioned again in other episodes
>02 was shit
>02 was garbage
Just no.
It didn't have a massively successful game franchise
i think it's just a combination of Pokémon having been first, Digimon not really having many good games (especially at the time), and each Season of the anime following a different cast with different partner Digimon and telling a new story. i blame the lack of video games on Bandai and their obsession with selling plastic toys, gunpla, and V-Pets over producing great video games though. they're like the Games Workshop of Japan.
also, just for the record, i like the rotating protagonists and new stories from Season to Season. it makes the setting feel vast and alive in a way that Pokémon has never accomplished with me. the world of Pokémon is weird because they discover a whole new continent with 150 new Pokémon on it every 3 years. can you imagine if we discovered a whole new continent tomorrow with 150 new species of animal living there? there'd be a lotta questions. lmao
The weird thing is that only happened once in hindsight. Only for johto did they say “whoopsie, new mons exist such wow”
Later on it became “oh hey these are only in that region but we knew about them”
This is too cool of a design to be shelved because of a gimmick that didn't work out.
Technically, Digimon came first, if you count Tamagochi.
Pokemon designs have more broad appeal.
Digimon is very obviously designed to appeal specifically only to boys going through puberty and manchildren.
how exactly? both look way too similar to me
all i'm saying is, if i were a girl, i'd wanna marry Wargreymon or Flamedramon. maybe i'm an outlier. there are some very, very handsome male Digimon. lol
BIG

I love Samusmon.
>Having Tailmon
>Having Patamon
>Having Terriermon
>Choices an ugly Dinosaur as main character
Even Monster Ranger understood something simple
The dub was shit
So was Pokemon's but Pokemon was not a story focused anime
The virtual pets weren't continuously ran in the US like they were in Japan so they were mostly a fad
The style of the games was inconsistent
Extremely awful mon design.
Bloated forgettable cast.
Mons talking is off putting autism.
Dumb lore/setting.
Complex plot.
Grimderp tone.
Imagine having an opinion this bad
Anon asked why the franchise never became popular. I explained why. It's not my fault Digimon solely appeals to tasteless autists.
We’ll said
Digimon was Pokémon for unpopular kids
But none of those shows save DBZ had good animation at all
Card Captor Sakura wasn’t popular at all in the US.
As a kid I hated that everyone compared Digimon to Pokemon when the only things they had in common were monsters and kid protagonists. The games AND shows couldn’t be more different
I bet you thought you looked really smart instead of just looking like a pretentious homosexual
Because Season 1 was the only worth watching. 02 is trash.
>Fox handled their animation department horribly
The fact this shit was tagged on to the movie pissed everyone off.
I did not know a single kid who like Angela Anaconda
What about that kid whose parents divorced because of it?
I did
You're right, I abhor Angela Anaconda.
It's easy to look back and think how dumb that was but Angela Anaconda was Fox Family's most popular show in 2000 so it wasn't that weird to promote it.
?si=HbkszacpBkb6nJov
nice cans
The most bewildering part is the fact that the writers for Angela Anaconda clearly had no idea what Digimon was actually about. It's as if Fox just threw them the designs of some of the human characters, and told them "that's Digimon, now make something for the film".
It featured incest. That's all you need to know.
moronic designs and names. Also Pokemon has a very simple but well defined concept, you catch creatures, train them and fight other creatures and you are incentivized to catch them all. Digimon had no such thing, it’s just not as relatable as Pokemon.
>moronic designs and names.
Some of the designs were kino, but the names were moronic. Ending every name with 'mon'? Really?
>ending everything with mon
>because they're DIGItal MONsters
It's called Soul.
>Demon
Kino
>DeMon
>Ending every name with 'mon'? Really?
Anon, that is their file type. Agu.mon Gabu.mon etc.
Because Digimon was cringe and came out after pokemon and so it looked like a lame ripoff
>all the digimons names ended in "mon" which was cringe
>the evolution tree made no sense and most of the designs were awful
>plot was hard to follow and didn't make sense for kids; their main demographic
>the cringe song that came on whenever a Digimon digi-evolved
?feature=shared
That shit was only played in the USA.
In latin america we had the original songs
The Spanish dub from Spain is weird since it has the original soundtrack, but the episode scripts are based on the US version.
That video is damning.
because you dont collect digimon plus you're sent to a strange world with weird monsters trying to kill you. Pokemon atleast felt comfy. Even the most violet Pokémon can be tamed and become friendly. The friendliest digimon turns into a dinosaur with guns.
>digichads thinking they had it bad
first season was kino
>It came out later.
>Games were much less accessible in the US and were not as good.
That's it.
The games weren't as fun as well.
burger dub and music was atrocious
it never stood a change compared to original & german
Terrible localization and marketing, mostly. Also a timing issue of coming out during Pokemania, so it was seen as a cheap knockoff. Targeting the wrong audience as well, I liked Adventure as a 6 year old and all but couldn't appreciate yet just how good it was (or Tamers a couple of years later for that matter)
>I thought it was much better
Well anon you were wrong
People just thought it was a Pokemon ripoff without ever watching it. And it didn't have popular games like Pokemon.
It wasn't first.
There was a period I remember it was more popular, everyone at school had digimon cards instead of pokemon
>never become as popular as Pokemon?
i watched digimon as a kid as it was airing and it even to a kid it was clear it was far superior to stuff like pokemon. the story had stakes, the characters were more complex (from an 8yo perspective.)
and that's the reason it failed to become a top tier franchise- you can't up the stakes and develop your characters for 20 seasons without cheap gimmicks. so once the original story was done - that was it, even hardcore fans lost interest quickly since everything after season 1 was clearly just watering everything down.
Because they all had -mon at the end of their names. moronic design
>why do digital things have their filetype designation at the end? Nobody would design that.
Well on a computer they all have logos. So you aren't going to send the wrong one unless you're braindead

Monster Ranger was weird mix of Pokemon and Digimon. It had a lot of death, even with stuff like killing entire human villages in it.
This shit was "OK, guess I'll go do my homework" tier
I liked watching the show but it went a year without any new episodes and the last season never even aired in the US. The dub is decent but half the show is Scott McNeil.
All I remember about this show is the theme tune, and not even the whole theme tune, just the end pat whee the say "Monster Rancherrrrrr"
It was a decent show. Nothing special but more exciting than Pokemon.
The games mechanic of using different disks in the console to spawn a new monster blew my little nuts through my skull. I'm still amazed no one really figured out how to maximize that kind of mechanic to sell a fricking ton of otherwise useless cds.
Kino OP and ED. Bu yeah I don't remember much about the plot.

Haven't there been recent movies. I might watch them (out of spite of course)
Yeah a bunch.
The tri movies are a mess, many people hete it, but I like it.
Last Evolution Kizuna was a greate ending for the Adventure saga.
Now there is the new 02 movie, I didn't watch it yet but it looks kino.
>Last Evolution Kizuna was a greate ending for the Adventure saga.
Ew. No.
Why not?
It was pretty bad, the others got sidelined brutally, pointless fusion transformation at the end and limp attempt at trying to be sad with the ending but not wanting to commit so the epilogue is still canon and they reunite with their mons anyway.
I though it was kino.
Definitely not. Boring, limp and unexciting.
Best villain coming trough.

I'm impressed that Tamers showed a naked little girl on TV.

I remember when Tamers came out in the US our local station stopped showing FoxKids/FoxBox, so there were months where we didn't get to see the show.
this happened after the first season where i lived, i only got to see a couple episodes of the four masters or whatever it was called
Frontier was the best of the 4 classic series.
I rike Jobbermon
Adventure was good until the end of the Myotismon arc, then they shat the bed during the Dark Masters arc
>then they shat the bed during the Dark Masters arc
How?
Digimon season 2 is such a mixed bag.
How you go from the kino that is the Digimon Kaiser and then follow it up with the fricking vampire being the big bad all over again complete with digimon team rocket is baffling.
They fired the original showrunner in the middle of the show, and then the new guy wanted to do something completely different.
The lore hasn't recovered from this since.
Why he got fired? Was porn involved?
The staff change really did a number on it. They could never decide on a primary focus for the series after Kaiser. World Tour is a fun arc with all the international destined though.
One of those series where I like the ideas but the execution just didn’t work. Also I wish Armors weren’t abandoned at the halfway point. Fusions were cool but really bottlenecked the digimon to the point Imperidramon was the only relevant one after awhile. Wish everyone could have gotten a Magnamon equivalent. Magna is the GOAT Veemon evolution.
What pissed me of the most is that they didn't pair TK and Kari together in the fusion thing.
>both part of the original digidestined
>Angemon and Angewomon both part of the same lore
>Literally 2 sides of the same coin
>we could get a cool Angel fusion
>their are paired with the lamest characters with nothing in common, with no lore behind it.
I thought it was very good up until the end of the black gear arc.
The Digimon movie Americans got was literally 3 different movies put together.
is the new game any good
i've read that it's just a clicking simulator grindfest
German intros are unironically even better than japanese ones.
was that the one with the whoah-oah-oh-oh-oooohs in the lyrics?
as a kid I watched in like 3 different languages
Yes
Is just butterfly german version.
HOLY SHIIIIIIIIIIIIT
damn this brought back memories.
also, anyone remember this one weird ep in which Izzy (sp?) was floating in space/vacuum trying to meditate/do thought exercises and meanwhile we had flashbacks to some family drama?
It's when Izzy activate his crest.

comfy game
amazing graphics too!
too bad the gameplay is boring and tedious
Holy KINO
We need a show about cool transforming monsters without the damn kids. Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, Monster Rancher, Beyblade... there's always kids controling the creatures.
Just remove humans and let the monsters be the characters. Has this been done?
digimon savers movie
there was a digimon x antibody movie but it's kinda boring tbh tbh
That movie is frickin wild
The movies can get really weird at times. Hurricane Touchdown feels like a fever dream and I love it for it.
>go back
Digimon season 1 is a masterpiece, unironically. Still watchable, while its of course aimed at children it has the qualities of a fascinating often surreal fairytale that speak even to an adult watcher.
Also this theme kicks even more ass than the evolution theme:
For me, it's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsuVmA4TXaQ&t=59s
For me it's Ravel's Bolero:
That short movie is incredible, and the bolero in digimon is so well done. Part of the reason why the real world scenes fly so good.
I rewatched Adventure and Tamers last year and enjoyed them more than I did as a kid
The show peaks with Angemon beating Devimon.
Going to the human world was a huge mistake.
The human world is the absolute peak, thats where Digimon manages to elevate itself to a true classic.
cringe
Shit taste
Where were you when Wada Koji died?
Digimon >>> Pokemon
Digimon+Pokemon=Palworld
>why digimon didn't make it big in amer-
>hey let’s have someone who worked on Evangelion and serial experiment lain work on season 3, what could possibly go wrong?
I just recently watched through all of subbed Tamers, so fricking good. The soundtrack is amazing too
It went so right that the next thing he did was the astro boy remake.
Imagine if disney made a mickey mouse series directed by Genndy Tartakovsky.
He also worked on the best episodes in S02.
> Best Thread on Cinemaphile in ages...
> It's about fricking Digimon!
Unfathomably based.
Digimon 01 remains the GOAT
The anime was great.
i like how people are pretending pokemon games were good, let alone better. laziest made games in the fricking universe and their own fans have been rebelling since the gameboy advanced era. look at pokemon the last 10 years, fricking absolutely disgusting excuses for games. they could never make something liek the digimon world games.

It's so weird how i can't find any rusttyrannomon figures
it's such a sick design
The movie OST is absolute kino

Sorry, Digibros.
Monster Rancher had more and better fanservice at the time. Better characters in general. Better story too. Unfortunately everything else was pretty shit.
>Monster Rancher
literally who
Something about the art/animation is unsettling for me. I don't like it
Monster Rancher is the RC Cola of monster shows.
There isn't anything Pokemon has put out that's as good as Digimon Tamers. Not by a long shot.
*popularizes All Star an entire year before Shrek comes out in your path*
>popularizes
It was an extremely big hit and played on the radio constantly. Thats like saying Spiderman made Post Malone popular.
I remember being shocked that Juri, despite being introduced as a side character, became the most important one in the end.
i just remember one season had a magical girl transformation sequence and that was when i first knew i was destined to be a loser perpetually horny for cartoons.
The board game was dope
bump
Just intersct rather than saying bump moron. Bumping is for when nobody has replied to a request, not when you are trying to hold conversation.

watching Leomon get uncomfortable and confused about why his e-girl tamer keeps making goo-goo frick me eyes at him was such an entertaining dynamic.
I remember being 8 or 9 and liking Mummymon a lot for some reason. That's usually how I behave when I like a girl, I sometimes wonder if little me knew at that time I would become a Mummymon-esque pushover
>literally unbeatable due to a bug in the regional version
I never got that far in the game either way if I'm being honest
someone worked out a fix for it a while ago but it's not something you could ever find on your own, it's like standing on one random map pixel in a special way
>digimon
>maybe play with a 10 dollar overglorified phone game
>by phone game i mean for feature phones, like a cell phone from 1990

>pokemon
>buy a game boy
>play a legitimate game that involves strategy and time sinking, becomes a semi legitimate e sport
>costs 50 bucks and 10 for a link cable but lets you play with other people
it's all down to market cap. Pokemon played the buisness game, the original IP maker even blamed israelites for keeping it going so long because goyim can't do shit without us
also digimon? no israelites, no israeliteromon, no urseryomon, nothing.
>anime has a transformation scene
>"LET'S USE THE SAME EXACT CLIP IN EVERY EPISODE AND SOMETIMES MULTIPLE TIMES!"
What joyless pricks
Must have been molested while Digimon was on
why did they make him so hot?
>There are real homies that think pokemon gen 1 designs compare at all to any of original digimon
Only had 1 good season, the first one, tamers is overrated and was alienating and boring to kids. Couldnt decide whether it wanted to be Pokemon or something serious. Shitty games. The actual surprise is, that digimon is still around and loved
