is there any point or meaning in this movie apart from just showing that scene?

    Take a hint, use the movie Title. Fricking dumbass

      The title might give you a clue.

      oh you mean that being violently raped in the ass is... IRREVERSIBLE!!! DEEP

      Time destroys everything, man, the worst pain and the greatest joy, it all gets turned to ashes by time and if you show events in reverse order a sad ending becomes a happy ending, really jogs the old noggin.

      >if you chronologically reverse the movie it has a different meaning
      uhm no

        It's also a play on words, irreversible, as in cannot go backwards and yet the movie has an altered structure that actually sets the past in motion.
        I expected better from Euro hours, fricking damn moron

          Funny story. I used to work at blockbuster and 90% of the time people didn’t rewind irreversible, likely thinking they couldn’t.

        What else is the point of showing the movie in reverse order and the conversation between the old people in the "beginning".
        100% Noe wants to make some hamfisted comment about filmmaking.
        If you just showed the movie in regular order it would just be a rape scene, she loses the babby, her bf goes to prison, their lives are irreversibly ruined.
        But if you show it in reverse it ends with two lovers in bed, a cozy intimate setting, for them it's a happy end because they dont know what the next 48 hours will bring.
        They're fates have been reversed.

          no, it was a simple attempt to cash in on the success of Memento. Told in correct order the story is unremarkable, uninspired, cruel gore slop. It still that in backwards order, but with a little intrigue thrown in.

              he was proud of it - it was the only way he could get the movie made - that and lying about the extend of the gore and extreme rape scene:
              >As an example, he [Noé] cited his experience getting financing for “Irreversible,” which he pitched as a story told in reverse order to capitalize on the popularity of Christopher Nolan’s “Memento” at the time. Additionally, while the film’s notorious rape scene does contain graphic imagery, he recalled telling financiers they had nothing to worry about. “They asked me, ‘So there’s explicit sex in the movie?'” he explained. “I said, ‘Of course not’…That’s how the movie was made.”

                So he lied on both occasions?
                And what about the dialogue at the start of the movie that is specifially about time destroying everything? Just coincidence?

                Noe is a cruel disgusting homosexual incapable of making art.

      Well you see this is where cultural differences come in play.
      You have an American merchant brain and think everything is about profit.
      Gaspar Noé even though he's not french, he has a french brain so he tries to make his movies incomprehensible and artsy in the name of l'art pour l'art

    On a more serious note this is what I get from the movie:
    gay people are demons;
    gay clubs smell like shit;
    caring for trans is wrong;
    the rape is karma for having proposed anal sex to your woman;
    gay and trans are subhuman psychopaths;
    even the slightest contact with gay/trans ppl is utterly destructive for normal human beings.

    Movies I like a lot are art ones that don't have clarity. Sometimes the movie is the top of the iceberg and the meaning is the submerged part you don't see, and don't really have a hope of knowing but you can sort of feel a meaning there like this picture. You can't articulate it but there's something worthwhile there, what I'm saying is its good when movies try to be like a weird painting

    >Noé addressed the curious reception to his various films. While he has shrugged off criticism of the rape scene in “Irreversible” for years, he acknowledged its potential to yield problematic results. Noé said that when the film was released in Buenos Aires, his mother’s friend went to see it, and “the moment the rape scene started, the guy sitting next to her started jerking off. She missed the end of the movie. You don’t know how people will perceive the movie at the end of the tunnel. Psychos are everywhere.”

    After watching a couple times, I looked further into it, and found out that the guy he kills at the beginning/end is the wrong guy. Couldn't catch that because the way the scenes are placed.
    Is it possible that the man who walks in on the rape,and walks away, is the Ex-boyfriend ? He seems like he still resents her for dumping him.

    People who ask about the "point" of movies and works of art in general are either midwits or intellectually inexperienced. Get educated.

  17. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

    No. That was literally the entire point. They wrote a rape scene and then created a movie around it. They just wanted to depict a rape in explicit detail because they're degenerate pieces of shit. It's the same with movies like I Spit On Your Grave, or Human Centipede. There was no plot or story written, the writer said, hey wouldn't it be fricked up to show a women getting beaten and raped... TWICE!... Or wouldn't it be funny if three people were forced to shit in each other's mouths. And then they created a movie AROUND their fricked up fetish.
