If you were a kid growing in the 80s ROTJ was your go to SW movie.

Literally yes. I grew up in the 80s and RotJ was the movie I watched all the time.

There is only one Return, and that is of the King.

Fricking newbie. Why don't you try lurking?

anti, but it's still the 3rd best SW film. It just has the teddy bears, and like no real structure beyond resolving what 5 left hanging, rather than have its own full narrative.

      >iconic, disgusting new villain (Jabba)
      >the emperor's throne room is one of the most fun sets in the entire deal
      >the emperor delivers the most delicious (villain) dialogue in the entire deal when he gloats about his trap and how the shield will be active
      >Battle of Endor is a brilliantly and seamlessly cut action sequence which pivots effortlessly between three distinct but connected scenes: the space battle, the ground battle, and the throne room duel. This distinctly modern way of rapidly cutting between 2-3 distinct theaters simultaneously has been aped by action flicks and sci/fi/fantasy/space operas ever since

ROTJ is an OT movie. It is therefore automatically better than every non-OT movie by default. The only reason why young people put it lower on their rankings is out of some misguided effort to sound "serious" or "mature" because they've thought so seriously about children's action movies.

I loved the space battle when I was young, and it still holds up pretty damn well watching it today. BUT I also love the Prequels so maybe I'm wrong.

        >learn2reading comprehension
It's 3rd best because it's not as good as New Hope or Empire.
And you can suck your thumb at set designs but 1hr of Jabbas Palace, a brief frickoff that repeats the pre-flight scene in New Hope, and then a 1hr frickoff of Endor and DSii is just not a movie. It's two large sequences back to back, there's no journey. It just finishes 5.

Honestly it's the closest Lucas comes in the originals to feeling like something JJ made, just mindless spectacle and frick the journey, make 2 films out of a cliffhanger and undercook the 2nd because everyone will show up.

Pure KINO. More soul than all the sequels combined.

You know what really bothered me about ROTJ? I never could quite figure it out until recently. In TESB they blow up the death star and the good guys win. In ROTJ the new death star is still being built. A government contract that big, they had to bring in independent contractors. Do you think a storm trooper knows how to install a toilet main. All they know is shooting poorly. There had to be all kinds of construction crews on there. They were just there to do a job. Then some left wing militants come in and blow the place. Victims of a war they had nothing to do with.

Well, I'm a contractor myself. I'm a roofer and speaking as a roofer, I can say that a roofer's personal politics come heavily into play when choosing jobs. Three months ago I was offered a job up in the hills. A beautiful house with tons of property. It was a simple reshingling job, but I was told that if it was finished within a day, my price would be doubled. Then I realized whose house it was. Kevin Smith's. The money was right, but the risk was too big. I knew who he was, and based on that, I passed the job on to a friend of mine.

They blew up the Death Star in ANH, not ESB. The Rebels lose at the end of ESB.

I was a kid so I loved it, Green Lightsaber looked cool, Speeder bike chase, etc. Now I appreciate things like the Luke and Vader scene before they head to the Death Star

12 movies and only 2 of them are any good. A new hope and empire strikes back. The rest are either god awful or mediocre (like ROTJ)

My rating is ESB > ROTJ > ANH

Pro. The Ewok stuff is the only bad stuff, but it's not horrible. The speeder chase is good, the final battle on the Endor moon is good, the Jabba Palace and sand ship stuff is good. The throne room is great.

Why isn't lighting the same like this in movies today anymore? It looks so good. Is it really because everything is shot on digital now?

rotj is pretty good except for the first segment on endor where ford and fisher are clearly just phoning it in and nothing really happens asides from the speeder chase until luke goes to vader
jabba's palace and the throne room are kino though

I like it but it's basically on the same level of the prequels: some bad dialogue and wooden acting but overall enjoyable.

Best luke look. Wish they would have more of the main characters use green. Wish they had Obi wan use the green blade in attack of the clones and he loses which leads him to building his OG lightsaber. I know he used in the eu for a while same with anakin

Pro. Nothing beats Lando and Wedge taking down a fricking Death Star and escaping to drink together and bang some Ewok prostitutes.

Pro, it's the catharsis of the whole trilogy. Everything that goes on onboard the Death Star is kino, from Luke surrendering, to his final words with his father.

basically what everyone else has said. a mix of both pro and anti
    >pros
    Jabba's palace
Emperor throne room, Luke and Vader's character arcs
    >cons
Endor (blowing up the Death Star AGAIN, Ewoks are boring)

It's funny how by just being a competent story ROTJ is a million times better than any of the sequel trilogy movies, which had no consistent character arcs and just made shit up on the fly
