The strength of Anne's character is that she was allowed to be very blatantly flawed, and not just in a cute, quirky, relatable way. She's openly selfish and dishonest around new people, and passive when it came to others' control of the actual direction of her life. So when she changes it makes more of an impact.
The only wasted potential is that Marcy and Sasha aren't utilized more as a foil, where all three are flawed but in very distinct ways that balance each other's stories and personalities out. The Plantars are fun, and offer a healthier environment in which Anne grows as a person, but they don't have enough of a character arc by comparison to grow or change half as much alongside her.
It's pretty believable. The fat kid with dorky friends loses weight, becomes overconfident and more widely popular, and then proceeds to get off on turning themselves into the bossy alpha-b***h among their vestigial friend group.
Having a clearly defined character arc in mind from the start was a big plus.
