Not american but I used to be babysit by my aunt. Other than that its just extended family or very close friends. You would be a fricking nutcase to let an actual stranger in your house like that.
The only thing I have ever seen that was close to that was an official kind of agency organisch by local evangelical caretakers. You could get employed as a home babysitter. But i dont think it took off

It seems (from movies and TV shows) that the babysitters aren't much older than the toddlers they look after

Lol most babysitters are local teenagers, typically children of family friends. They might take some booze but are harmless

When i was a kid my parents worked early, so i had to go to a "child minder" before going to school. That's pretty much the same thing as a babysitter

some dude out there came up with the term "au pair" and made them a thing. the guy must have felt so clever, coming up with a way to say "mistress nanny" but make it sound good.

Don't tell mom the babysitter is dead and Adventure's in babysitting are two standout memories of movies I have from the mid 90s, watching them as a kid. I never had a babysitter, though. My mom just watched them.

Here in Europe we just tend to leave our kids alone to roam anywhere because it's perfectly safe and harm can possibly come to a child.
