Yeah, the best Batman stories are the ones where there's clearly the man and heart behind and separate from the crusade and cowl, but it's not like Bruce Wayne is that man either.
Only a billionaire would concoct such an ass-headed plan to fight crime, then persist for ages at it as it failed to curtail crime.
So he's billionaire Bruce Wayne.
The only mythical aspect of his character is it's ability to keep Detective Comics Comics solvent.
most people will agree with that page and say that Bruce Wayne is the mask an dhe's only Batman but I think it's still part of who he is,
otherwise he would be like Rorschach/Mr. A, devoid of compassion and friendless.
If you follow the story to the end, you have your answer: Batman is the mask, Bruce is the person. And Dick knows this, which is why he always goes against Batman when Batman comes before Bruce.
Bruce was being a douche, that's the point. Jason's death and Bane and the Clench and the Quake and NML and Gordon nearly dying had taken its toll. By the time he crawls out of his hole and tries to help Sasha, Checkmate had already stepped in.
I just think of the Shriek episode in Batman Beyond where he's trying to drive Bruce crazy by being a paranoid voice in his head, but Bruce boasts that he was never fooled because he never calls himself "Bruce" in his head. >Terry: For the record, that's my name now. >Bruce: Tell that to my subconscious.
That's just the problem with any mainstream comic book character.
At the end of the day you can't really rely on a cohesive overarching storyline for them since every writer has their own headass interpretation of them, usually formed by other media like movies and cartoons.
Just stick to the writers you know you like and can do justice to the characters and disregard anything not directly relevant to the stories they're writing.
Yeah, that kind of stuff has completely killed my interest in actively following any main comics. Characters and their arcs are at the complete mercy of editorial requiring them to be on teams, in events, or handed off to another writer, and you're left just waiting and hoping that another writer will come along and fix things for a few months/years--if the possibility is even there--but then it's right back to more bullshit right after.
When that's the case and you're just reading a single run every few years anyways, it's better to keep your ears out for minis or monthlies that aren't necessarily the "main" focus, like how the current World's Finest is a fun romp that has some great human Batman in it.
Batman also gives his real name as Batman when holding the Lasso of Truth. Deep in his heart, Bruce Wayne died along with his parents in crime Alley. When little Bruce prayed to the Lord to be able to war against crime, he offered himself up as a living sacrifice to justice.
Although I would like to see a good writer completely rip off Spawn #8 (the Dave Sim issue) and have a reflection upon "I am Batman, I am not Batman."
People keep saying Paul Dini once said that exact thing, that the "real" one is the Bruce who sits at the Batcave with mask off, Alfred and the others at his side, but I've never seen a definite source for it.
Batman is the mask. Only autistics don’t understand this. The same people who don’t understand that Clark kent in smallville is the real Clark, Superman/Metropolis Clark are masks.
>Superman/Metropolis Clark are masks
Unless the writer goes with the interpretation that only Superman is the mask, with both Smallville and Metropolis Clark being the same guy.
>w-writers interpretation
I don’t give a frick about those egotistical homosexuals. If they’re not writing with respect to long held canon they don’t matter. No Big 2 writer should have an interpretation.
Has Nightwing always been such a whiney gay? Stop living in your dad's house already gawd
he only exists to whinge and complain in Bruce's direction. like jason but without the occasional villain part
>666
trips of evil, mark of the beast
Dick was right. Bruce was being a c**t.
They're both masks.

one single shitty writer using his pet whiney b***h Nightwing to soapbox how Batman should be edgeless and boring does not make it correct.
Two of the best writers to ever write a Batman comic in what's one of the best Batman events ever published.
Yeah, who doesn't love Batman leaving an innocent to rot in jail under a murder charge
Bruce was being a douche, that's the point. Jason's death and Bane and the Clench and the Quake and NML and Gordon nearly dying had taken its toll. By the time he crawls out of his hole and tries to help Sasha, Checkmate had already stepped in.
It was a rhetorical question meant to start a discussion. I read Bruce Wayne: Murderer when it was first published.
I just think of the Shriek episode in Batman Beyond where he's trying to drive Bruce crazy by being a paranoid voice in his head, but Bruce boasts that he was never fooled because he never calls himself "Bruce" in his head.

That's exactly why people who say Bruce is the mask are casualhomosexuals who only know Timmslop
This guy is correct
The problem is that the Timmslop has ultimately bled over into all other Bat-media, so now there's no escaping that stupid mindset.
That's just the problem with any mainstream comic book character.

Or don't read any of that nerd crap and stick to the actual good shit in outside media.

so uh, is there no middle-ground between Batman and Bruce Wayne?
There's no third "true" persona, like there's one between Clark Kent and Superman?
People keep saying Paul Dini once said that exact thing, that the "real" one is the Bruce who sits at the Batcave with mask off, Alfred and the others at his side, but I've never seen a definite source for it.
Is that Cass's face melting off behind Dick?
took a dick beating

>smallville Clark is the real Clark, and Superman/Metropolis Clark are masks.
okay, but if Batman/Gotham playboy Bruce are masks, what is the real "smallville" version of Bruce?
Bruce when he’s behind closed doors with his family and friends.
>Superman/Metropolis Clark are masks
Unless the writer goes with the interpretation that only Superman is the mask, with both Smallville and Metropolis Clark being the same guy.

Having Clark act like some nice guy geek is lame, dude.
The story arc from the page you posted literally answered this question OP.
