I went to see Dune 1 in an "imax" and was pretty disappointed. I feel like the Cineplex/Galaxy big screens are better. imax has been around for like decades. How isn't it obsolete?
Probably didn't get a real IMAX. Majority of screens are undersized and have old 2k projectors, you have to do your research and find a laser venue with a screen at least 50ft tall.

This map tells you. If it's a domed IMAX it is always real.
You have to research it on the google to see what you local IMAX is. A proper one has a laser projector and massive screen see this anons post

What's a good way to figure this out? I have the cineplex in town which is pretty good (better than 2k IMAX), but if IMAX is still the best, how do I find the proper screen?
https://lfexaminer.com/theaters/ >D = xenon projector
shitty dull 2k digital >1570 = real film IMAX
Only for Nolan films at this point >DL/DL2 = Laser
Good, bright 4k digital
No it's the worst and most common. DL or DL2 is what you want, if you don't have that available it's better to go with the theater chain's premium brand instead (Dolby cinema, etc).

What is best out of these, discounting Sudbury?

Scotiabank Toronto and Ontario Place are big and have laser. If you're looking for Dune, Vaughan is good too because they're showing it in 70mm.

Kewl. That's about 2 hours drive from here but maybe it's worth it.
every time I think about the tickler seats with bubbles, motion, simulated rain and wind is how hard it would be to watch a movie while you're getting tickled and pissed on

Picture quality might be fine but it's ruined by the shit theater seating with small fixed chairs to cram as many people as possible into a showing and tendency to run the audio about ten decibels too loud. It seems Dolby Atmos theaters are taking over where IMAX used to be king.
>It seems Dolby Atmos theaters are taking over where IMAX used to be king.
Totally. That's why I made this thread. There's two Atmos theaters in town and no imax so I guess I'll go there. I guess, does it matter if the movie (Dune 2) was filmed specifically for imax?
I prefer the dolby theater at my local AMC to the imax.
Yeah. Like I said I was disappointed with imax the last time I went.
Yeah

you likely went to a "fake" imax branded screen. A genuine imax screen is exceptionally different than any screen you'd be accustomed to.
Probably didn't get a real IMAX. Majority of screens are undersized and have old 2k projectors, you have to do your research and find a laser venue with a screen at least 50ft tall.
Most IMAX aren't even real IMAX. Movie theaters are scams.
Yeah I suspected that. What is good imax and bad imax?

lol
>When the 3d imax craze started and ended
They don't really build many new IMAX screens at all I can tell you that
Apparently there are none in Southern Ontario. (But there are).
There are far more faux Imax theaters than proper ones. They are still pretty good due to excellent sound but they don't all have the huge screen.
I do remember that the sound was excellent. We had bad seats on one of the side aisles so I can only remember the movie in a weird angle.
What's a proper one? The only one near me is in a Regal theater

I would aim for a screen size of at least 50ft.
So 'D' is the best?

4DX chads where you at
What's so special about it?
It’s entirely a gimmick
The frick is this? You get tickled during the movie?
>ticklers
I remember this shit from seaworld. Is it still a thing?
every time I think about the tickler seats with bubbles, motion, simulated rain and wind is how hard it would be to watch a movie while you're getting tickled and pissed on
Sounds more like a theme park ride than an artistic piece of work that is a movie.
Avatar 2 Way of Water imax = good
Oppie / MCU shit where it's only certain scene with imax = bad
Most "IMAX" movies nowadays are the latter, so bad
>he didn't watch Dunc2 with 270deg FOV
How does this work if the film isn't filmed in that aspect ratio? Do they just stretch out the image on the sides?
Yeah, probably the dumbest cinema gimmick ever invented.
