wasn't this based on a webcomic that screwed the original authors and creators out of it so they wouldn't have to pay them?

After some googling. I found that the webcomic creator submitted this idea to teletoon who told him to frick off and they used his original script and ideas he submitted for the show

I still like plenty of raunchy ones like South Park, Metalocalypse, Drawn Together, I just generally prefer less dysfunctional adult cartoons

at what point does a "laid-back" adult cartoon become a children's cartoon? bob's burgers used to have an edge and lost it in the newer seasons

      All cartoons are for children.

Bob's Burgers followed up an extremely wholesome child friendly episode with one of their raunchiest episodes in years this season. They're very aware of the show's reception and are actively having fun with that.

They're really shouldn't be any child friendly episodes of Bob's Burgers, it's a cartoon that was aimed for adult audiences.
I've heard that the creator of the show actually change the entire tone of the series because some parents were complaining it's too inappropriate for their kids to watch but if you're the parent and you think your kids are watching some inappropriate then just turn the tv off.

Seems to me that the Bobs Burgers crew are only churning out safe and sterile crap in the modern era of protest and cancelling. The show really went bland unfunny around 2016-17, around the time when saying moron in public can get a twitter lynch mob after you. Also Central Park and Great North is the exact same level of bland unfunny shit. So it is definitely a crew thing not a single series thing.

bob's Burgers lost it's teeth because the original premise was recording several comedians adlibing an entire unscripted conversation.

Then they had to switch over to scripting everything and the show has been bland ever since. Loren Buchard is a shit writer and always faked it by letting his actors say whatever into a mic and animating that.

New sincerity got big in the 2010s, like Family Guy they leaned into what they thought people liked it for

I was just curious, since most adult cartoons are more raunchy and grotesque, compared to the amount of tamer ones

With wholesome there's a thin line between being endearing and being boring.

People talk about the stuff worth talking about.
    Raunchy stuff generates discussion.
So you'll hear more about the bad raunchy cartoons than the good wholesome cartoons.

Not really no. Ideally adult cartoons should be about tackling adult situations in a mature subject matter.

Definitely used to be a thing in the 90s and 00s. Everyone in the 90s was imitating Simpsons and making a specifically not wholesome animated sitcom since Simpsons was making fun of the perfect family 80s sitcoms. Then everyone in the 00s was trying to outdo South Park and led to the edgy humor phase of tv.

But there is also the fact that if you are just going to make a regular ol' normal people show full of regular folks in normal situations, why animate it at all? You can save half the budget and most of the production time by just hiring actors and recording a love show. Animation is expensive and very time consuming.

Not at all. Just so long as said wholesomeness isn't at the expense of actual jokes. Simpsons, Home Movies, and Baby Blues struck that perfect balance. Bob's is fine but it's become almost childish now. Still one of the sweetest adult cartoons, just not the funniest anymore.
