    Gundam has stagnated since CCA.

Stagnate how exactly? OG Build Fighters (10 years old this year already), G-Reco, Thunderbolt, Hathaway's Flash 1 and G-Witch all came after 00 and were varying levels of good. If anything, 00 cleared that stagnation because everything that came before it in the 2000's (SNEED, shitty 3D experiments with Igloo and Evolve) all sucked.

Though none of the new ideas Gundam has had since have been as interesting as what 00 was trying with it's S1.

It just seems to me like everything after 00 has been derivitive of an older and better Gundam series. And not just a little better, but blatantly so. 00 tried to be a more grounded take on Wing and did it well and arguably better than Wing for it's first season. After that, it took a nosedive. But to reiterate my point, all the Build stuff is essentially just a worse version of G. G-Reco was just a worse version of Turn-A. IBO is just a worse version of 8th MS Team, but stretched out. AGE was just a horrible mishmash of all the Gundam tropes and didn't know how to tie it together. Unicorn was just an excuse to reboot UC. IBO was just meh, and I haven't even bothered with anything after it.

Meant to say Thunderbolt on that last one, not IBO again.

Wait, I see what you're talking about. I actually agree, but recycling ideas just seem to be the norm for franchises banking on nostalgia these days. Have you tried HF yet? It was genuinely great, especially compared to other entries these days. However, it was written by Tomino so you just know Gundam will run out of ideas again once it's done.

I dunno man, maybe take a break.

        >IBO is just a worse version of 8th MS Team
Aside from the general aesthetic of "we're real soldiers" I really don't see any similarities between IBO and 08th MS.

G-Witch was not good though. Its probably the biggest example of Gundam's stagnating.

Yeah, it had fewer ideas of it's own than even SEED

      >shitty 3D experiments
Regardless of the quality of the end product, experiments are inherently indicators that something isn't stagnating.

Why do people even like 00?

I liked the designs a lot, and liked it's attempt at showing how disparities in tech aren't long-lived things if your enemy is at all capable of innovation.

I really enjoyed the aces and how they managed to overcome the tech advantage through strategy in S1 and for S2, as bad as it was, I really enjoyed that Ribbons was such a competent villain that his downfall was literally his own hubris and persistence to see himself as a god. The supplemental material, both for the characters, tech, and CB in general is really interesting to read and it’s just a pretty well put together world, primarily helped by the fact that it’s AD. It had something for everyone in the first season and the second season, while bad for the standards set by season one, was not that bad of a watch. It’s just a good story already but it has good mecha and tech progression on top of all of that.

It was one of the last Gundam stories to get 50 episodes and see a decent attempt at world-building and technology. There was also a ton of side material in the form of manga as well as a line of basically MSV tech info-drops. I mean sure, the tech was more or less a redress of minovsky particle tech from UC, but I think that actually helped since it gave fans something familiar to compare with but the writers still put their own spin on it so it wasn't a complete rehash of minovsky particles.

And what's worse is that, due to AGE being an utter flop and IBO's production being so messy that resulted with the animation looking like crap 90% of the time and with an ending everyone and their mother hated, 00 might've really been the last hurrah for an AU being so well realized. Unless Ad Stella gets another show, and with G-Witch's ending I don't think it's looking very likely, we're stuck with UC, CE and AD if you want well realized Gundam settings. And they're exploring new territory with UC at a snail's fricking pace.

00 is the only series aside from the original that made a clear social commentary about a mainstream political conflict.
I think that alone made it very resonant with audiences. On top of that it just has stellar designs and animation.

Technically Gundam SEED also does that ("The bloody valentine war" literally starts due to a 9/11 analog), but 00 just went further with its analogy by bringing in themes of religion and the politics of energy distribution to the forefront.
SEED kinda ignored that stuff and only had it sprinkled in and left in materials outside the show.

For Gundam to do something like that again they'd have to make a show about Ukraine or something like that, but that's basically Victory Gundam. Another angle is to look at how drone warfare is taking agency away from soldiers and what the future of war is starting to look like.
I thought G-Witch would talk about these themes because it was hinted at in some early episodes but it just ended up being less concerned with "big picture" stuff like that.

        It really isn't.

Wing did it first and it was touched upon very lightly by IBO.

Wing does do it to a degree, but it feels antiquated compared to what's actually happening now.
Today with the way literally everything is connected to digital/internet infrastructure and how much humanity relies on that plus the rising of AI(even if it's not true AI) there's new opportunities for a Gundam story to have a more relevant take on that stuff.

Not just Gundam, I’d say the entire anime industry has been stagnating since the 2000s
