Is it just me, or did the strip become a lot more mean-spirited after 1990?

Is it just me, or did the strip become a lot more mean-spirited after 1990? Watterson basically got rid of any positive traits Calvin had, and there were a lot less stories that showed his good side

My main problem with the strip is that people treat Calvin like shut for his imagination and can't play along with it

Rosalyn, Susie, and his mom buy in occasionally

Rosalyn did in her last arc. Susie pretty much never buys into it, like when he's playing super hero. It makes her look like she has no imagination

she plays pretend with him all the time, and also doesn't strictly treat Hobbes as a stuffed toy due to her own relationship with Mr. Bun.

She only plays house with him anon. We never see her try a game of Calvinball or whatever else Calvin is up to, like playing spaceman or superhero.

Please explain WHAT positive traits Calvin ever had before asking if he went downhill in '90.
He was a brat from day one. Feeling sorry for a dying bird was about the only time he cared about anyone else.

The dying racoon and giving a shit when his mom was sick. He was also genuinely thankful to Susie for finding Hobbes

It really feels like people who judge Calvin so harshly either don't understand how kids minds actually operate, or they're venting their own regrets about their childhood behavior.

Well Watterson seems to judge him harshly based on how people react to Calvin in the strip

Not only that, but it felt like everyone he knew just hated his guts besides Hobbes. It just feels unpleasant to reqd after a certain point

What's with all the threads lately?

I wouldn't say mean-spirited, but it did lose its touch a little in its last few years. The strip became more of a platform for Watterson to complain about whatever was bothering him that day.

You're going on about a strip that only had a ten year run

    >Watterson basically got rid of any positive traits Calvin had, and there were a lot less stories that showed his good side
That's because Hobbes *is* Calvin's good side.
Hobbes develops a lot more and shows Calvin coming into the world. He's still a brat, but we see his introspection grow a lot stronger over time.
Take this strip for example. Calvin is being a greedy little butthole and Hobbes is being content with making his own small success. But the reality is that it's really about Calvin making and enjoying a sandwich he made for himself, and coming to a (reluctant) realization that he's happier because it's attainable.

But the thing is that Calvin never learns from his mistakes. He's pretty much doomed
